I had straight drag pipes on my 79 Sportster many years ago. Sportsters were all 1000cc back then. It sounded good a little loud but good. I was wondering about putting straight pipes on my Blast. Would it still run good. Would it sound stupid. Would it be any louder than my old bike.
Thanks for any knowledge, thoughts and opinions.

The Force exhaust is just a tuned and stepped straight pipe - sounds big twin loud - I like it - I've seen it done on several Blasts with varying results depending on the pipe.

Welcome to the Thumper Forum Nevets!

There are tons of bikes running around with straightpipes. I think the basic problem with the Blast stock pipe is the diameter. I think that because of the available area under the bike there is a limit to what you can do as far as length goes. There was a picture of a Blast with a Sportster front pipe mounted on it some where in the Thumper Forum.

As far a sound goes thumpers sound different than anything else around. A straightpipe will let you be heard from a long ways off. Even alot of the aftermarket pipes will also.

I was thinking of just pipe straight out the back. Maybe my local muffler man could bend me one. Thats basically what I had before only chrome plated.

damn that would be loud...now grafting a cherrybomb in there would help a bit and cut down on the post rock concert ringing in your ears.

I think I'm going to try it. It shouldn't cost more than $40. The clamp is $12, I checked today and it shouldn't cost much to put two or three bends in a piece of pipe. I'll try to find out how much tomorrow.

I've spent $40 on stupider stuff, and if it is real loud, just think of what fun I can stir up in the good ole neighborhood.

I think there's some difference in opinion of what constitutes a "straight pipe".

My opinion: A single diameter (not-stepped) pipe with NO megaphone, muffler, etc.

I wouldn't run one on a Blast. I've done it. The motor is really not enjoyable. For example, a V&H without the muffler on a stock motor has TONS of grunt right off idle, then a GIGANTIC hole all the way up the rev range, then a last hit RIGHT before the rev limiter. And I mean RIGHT before the rev limiter. Where you operate the motor basically has NO power. No time to enjoy it. An upshift at the rev limiter then puts you DEEP out of the power. This will, of course, vary with pipe length & diameter, cams, etc, but it's how my Blast ran.

At LEAST step the pipe and spread those scavenge pulses.

Sarodude:

How is(or was) your carb. set for the straight pipe ???

"i" am running a PRODUCT IMPROVED OEM ex. system ...

Modified air box(K&N air filter), idle screw out 2 1/2 turns, low speed #48, stock
needle raised 0.050 thousands, slide rounded, slide hole drilled out #32 drill
and a #180 high speed ...

Pulls hard all the way to 6500(stock rev limiter) throught the gears to 5th ...
Have not ran it top end yet, "BUT" it is still pulling hard when "i" back off after shifting into 5th for a short ways ...

Thanks Everyone. I think I might try the Force exhaust. The muffler man did not really want to mess with it anyway.

First though, I'm going to have to deal with my rear wheel bearing that started coming apart on the way back from Raleigh last night. It felt like it was riding funny. I just thought it was my butt going to sleep. It scared me a little when I saw it this morning. I don't know what happens when a wheel bearing comes apart, but I would rather hear about it than tell about it.

Oh well it was about time for a new tire any way, guess I'll handle them both at the same time.

Check the threads on rear wheel bearings and their replacement. Good luck!

LaFayette-

I really don't remember what I tried with the carb with that setup. I only remember that reasonably clean carburetion netted the powerband I described.

EZ-

FIVE steps? WTF? What are the pipe ODs?

LOL - I measured the Force -

1st - 1 3/4 down to 1 5/8 at 1/2"
2nd - 1 5/8 up to 1 3/4 at 12"
3rd - 1 3/4 up to 1 7/8 at 4 1/2"
4th - 1 7/8 up to 2" at 15"
then 2" for a couple " then the flare out to the 3" cone reversing to 2 1/2 in 3 inches length
Total length is 50"
can total is aprox 16"
Header total 34"
Sorry only 4 steps - I was thinking of the custom header and tunable exhaust I will be putting on in a couple of weeks - already prepping for the XBBlast - lol -
Next measurements I take are for the completed conversion of the Tuned LSR header Terry B gave me - 5 steps, fluid form - along with a 3" long coupler onto a SS Supertrapp 4" with 12 discs in place - with my set up - I expect it to be fun! You know that means the Red bike gets the Force and Scott gets the D&D can for the Poor man's Force setup.

3500 to 7500 is definitely where I ride!

Thats why I worked on the jetting and shimming, and different needles - to also be able to launch well and keep that mid to top punch.

No - that is an actual Force Exhaust that I bought on sale - it had been in the back storage of the shop for over 6 years and the mounting hardware was lost - I got it at 2/3rds less than the retail - not a scratch on it and it is the Holy Grail of Blast exhausts - pulling almost twice the gains of its competitors - at over double to triple the competitors price as well when it was being sold - I feel I got a hell of a deal - at mid to top it really gets her pulling - should pretty well max out the red bike - engine wise for now - I really like it - even though it is loud!

A further note - Force exhausts where notorious for great power but all had longevity issues - so far I've got over 5000 on mine but my mounting is eclectic - using an automotive rubber block exhaust hanger with tabs on opposite sides for the front lower to the stock hardware mounting position, and in the rear using: 4 rubber washers, a hanger-bracket, 2 - bolts, locking nuts, 4 washers - this has worked well - so far - all welds are holding - knock on wood - I'll try to keep this one humming forever - lol
