Do we really need another oil thread? ohwell The Knowledge Vault is for everyone, Thumpers included. If you really want to learn what "everyone is using for oil" the Lubrication topic there, with its 1,100+ posts would be a great place to start. :)

"Preferred Engine oil (brand/grade)" is also one of the items in everyone's user profile that we can share.

A good quality synthetic is by far the better oil than any conventional.

Awww... C'mon Blake, I think you are missing an opportunity here! Even Harley wised up and took this route...

Time for a line of "BadWeb Full Synthetic 20w50" motor oil!

You could even have several lines, the "Normal Duty" stuff (Castrol or Valvoline 20w50 full synthetic at $6 per quart) and Race Duty (Mobil 1 V Twin at $9 per quart), or even the Designer Line (Sreaming Eagle 20w50 full synthetic, which I strongly suspect will be VERY similar to our Race Duty line ;) ).

All it would take is a box of stickers :) Whenever anyone asks about oil, we can just say "Based upon our extensive experience base, we recommend only the BadWeb line of oils... Any other oil will flat spot your muffler bearings".

Hey, Just curious here. Does anyone else's Blast go through what seems to me a bit to much oil? Mine goes from full on the stick down to the end every fill up. And it isn't leaking and does not appear to burn any. So where is it going? Any ideas?

Is it being sucked into the carb? Do you still have the stock PCV set-up? I've read that when this is done away with they use much less oil(esp. if you ride hard).The fixes range from turning the hose away from the carb(easy) to re-routing the entire system(time consuming)!

Is your Blast smoking? If yes, and the spark plug looks oily grimy it's probably rings. If yes, and the plug looks clean, I'd pull the exhaust and look at the at the exhaust valve guide. Mine consumed a heck of a lot of oil when I had a cracked valve guide.

I get oil in the air filter box. Has anyone had that? Excuse my lack of terminology. The dealer claims it will do that. The throttle (valve?)clatters when I give it gas also. Any Ideas?

Bmule-

The slide clattering is pretty much an indication of lugging the engine too low in the rev range. Pick a lower gear and / or slip the clutch a bit more (if you're launching).

Oil puking into the airbox is not uncommon. Keep an eye on your oil consumption (miles / tanks / SOMETHING per quart? oz? smidgen?) and get an idea of how much oil is being consumed under what circumstances. Our Blast is a guzzler.

I'll be sure to keep an eye on that. But the clattering happens even when I give it gas, sitting still. It's the piece that looks like a piston (moving up and down), inside the air filter case, Uh,(boy, do I feel stupid)
on the accelerator?

Point is that it probably only happens at lower RPMs. "Giving it gas" is one thing. You can be giving an engine gas while it's still way low in the rev range. My reference above to the slide is that piece that looks like a piston inside the air filter case (or airbox).

If you're curious, there's lots of info on the net and on BadWeB about how Constant Velocity (or CV) Carbs work. If ya don't find what you need to know - just ask (in an appropriate thread so Blake doesn't post a frowney face!).

The plug is fine. It's a nice medium tan in color. And it doesn't appear to be burning it. It's barely over 12,500 miles on her now. So I hope the guides are good. Using about 200ml. ever tank. So maybe that isn't much for a Blast.

Yes the whole thing is still bone stock. Sounds like something easy enough to check the PCV set up. I guess it wouldn't hurt to move it away from the carb.

If it's not burning, it's probably blowing it out of the breather like EriK says. I usually use about 4oz every 200 miles, pretty close to what you use.

Have your breather re-routed, Jerry (Blastin) should be able to show you how. It really cut down on my oil consumption, and kept the oil off the bike.

Naw - but there is a inside rise in that section of the frame you see as you look down that the oil does cover - so that is all you would need. A picture would show it better - lol - go sneek a look in a friends Blast and you'll see what I mean - lol

I'd buy the pyrex model provided it fit under the seat, the case had a Pegasus on it, and the whole thing cost less than $20 including shipping.

I read about the straw thing a few weeks ago, but just got around to trying it tonight. I make the straw, stick it in the tank and the oil doesn't even come up to the first line. "Well that can't be right," I think, "Maby the oil is too thick to go into the straw." I go and get a McDonalds straw. One of the ones thats about 3/8 of an inch in diameter, and I mark it up. I stick it in the tank and the same thing happens. "Where the hell is my oil," I'm thinking. Now I check it with the dipstick. Sure enough it's very low. The thing is, it's hard enough to read the dipstick that it wouldn't be hard to convice yourself that it was fine if you went suspicious. I had noticed that my oil consumption had gone down. At least I thought it had. I added about 1/2 a quart and now it's back up to normal.

The straw is a great idea. My engine will certainly be happier :-)
