OK so I git a racing ECM from Erik Buell Racing. My bike is an 06 and everything I read said the seat damages ECM's. I unsuccessfully have tried to find the postings that gave ideas how to protect it. Some help with ideas and even photos would be great.

Unbolt it and zip tie it someplace safe.

Any body know where we could buy socket plugs so we could basically make a extension to reroute our ECM to a different and more safe place.

I don't think you can extend the wires because the resistance will be different

If the extra distance would be a resistance issue, then every Lightning which came with the ECM up near the tail light and every Firebolt which has them between the headlights, and every 1125 which put it on the radiator, those bikes wouldn't work. The Uly has the shortest wire runs out of any XB.

I'm not saying it won't work, I'm saying that it would have to be calibrated for the difference in resistance and I am not sure about it either. Someone should try it. If it works, I can think of better places to mount the ECM. I would like to know for sure.

Resistance of the wires would be a non issue, you are talking about small fractions of an ohm per foot. The connections would be the big issue, eacho one is an opportunity for failure. So you would want to carefully solder and wrap them, then perhaps wrap the whole stack again.

The previous owner of my Uly had the factory fix put in, a nice big block that takes the weight without transferring it to the ECM. Seems like a nice fix to me.

Just unbolt it and slide it in the pocket under where it is originaly mounted. Wrap it in a little fuzzy warm thing and it will be all cozy there.

It is not like you have to hook a trailer hitch to it.

My 08XT had the block but early on my ECM connection was damaged and caused a kinds of weird symptoms. I just simply bent the bracket down when installing the comfort kit to lower the connection out of harms way. Took all of 5 minutes to complete the mod. I did check with some clay to make sure a had plenty of clearance. I have not had any problems since (27K miles).

Just unbolt it and stick it down in the cavity under the positive cable. No need to extend anything or make brackets or tie wrap. Mines been there for thousands of miles with no issues whatsoever. Pics are in the 15th post down on this page:

Factory fix was putting in a spacer block on the forward mount bolt, but mine showed evidence that seat was lightly touching anyway.
I (and others) have made a homemade rear spacer block out of scrap plastic and put that on the rear mount bolt so the seat can no longer touch the main ECM case nor the connectors.

I have a 08 xt uly I found a crack in the ECM about a month ago . I was reading a couple of threads up from what I am posting . There is a link To where some one had relocated there ECM . So I started reading on that link . So I came upon thread about a 5 year emission warranty that covers quite a few things like the ECM . Then I contacted my dealer and asked them if the ECM was covered under that warranty. so then they came back and told me yes it would be covered . So they ordered me a new ECM and it should be in next week .

Pdento, did you take the bike in to your dealer or just make contact with them?

I have my 'old' ECM, fall within the 5 year window and would love to swap them for my old one.

I actully went to the dealer and they ordered me a new ECM . It should be in next week . it is all going to be covered under the federal emissions warranty . I actully got a partial list of things that it covers from the dealer. So the bike will be in the shop next week some time so they can replace the ECM .

Was looking at mine..... couldn't I just dremel the cross where the circle is on the seat and be done with it? Make a slightly bigger circle?

I did the dremel seat thing along with heating the seat base and making a slight depression in the seat pan and it still hit. Gotta move it to be safe

My bike now has no spark - hope that used race ecm I ordered gets it back on the road.
For the spinning bolt on the ECM problem, if it's really hot like it is in my garage you can just give a good tug and the nut will pop right through that plastic inner fender.
My much-maligned X1 has a much better ECM mounting set up than this bike does.
I'm going to shove the ECM down and secure it with some industrial strength velcro until something better comes along.
Did anyone ever come out with a set of extension plugs so you can move it back by the bank angle sensor? Al at American Sportbike, maybe???

encase the ECM in a thick lead case to protect it from an air burst nuclear device......

you gotta be ready for anything....

I weigh in at a staggering 135 lbs, so my seat pan doesn't touch the ECM.

Problem solved. Maybe the rest of you should diet.

South side harleydavidson buell replaced my ECM on Monday . Under the emission warranty I can't hardly believe the difference in the way it runs now . It hard to believe a little black box makes that much of a difference . I know it controls almost every thing on the bike.

I cut the plastic out above the ecm so the foam just touches it. No problems. Also did the same where the rear head vibrated on the seat. Worked fine...I miss the vibes now and then.

OK OK here. I have an Erik Buell Racing ECM and cracked the plug. I think I have a handle on it for now. Cleaned it off and epoxied aluminum plates and gussets on the plug. Then cut angles into the mounting tabs. It has been working fine.

I have had the plastic standoff bolted on the whole time. I have since cut clearance into the circle with 2 bars under side of the seat. If it goes bad on me, I have the stock ECM under the seat.

In the hot weather on back roads I had started resting my legs on top of the frame pucks. That coupled with my loosing 38 pounds so far allowed my boney hind end to push down on the center of the seat. The OEM ECM never had to contend with that.

How much heat will bubble wrap take? I'm thinking of the relocation under the positive cable but would like to cushion the ECM a little.
