I live in central Massachusetts. To the west are the Berkshires and the Adirondacks; to the northwest are the Green Mts.; and the White Mountains are to my north. Mount Wachusett is a 20 minute ride from my house. If you come out here, I'll take you down some roads that will be neither flat nor level for more than 100 yards(or meters) at a time.
However, I also love to ride to other places that are far away, like Daytona or East Troy. I also use my bike to commute to work, and it would be nice to know that my lunch is going to be dry when I arrive. I'm working on adapting a set of S3 bags to fit my M2, but the factory could do it better. I JUST WANT THEM TO BUILD AN XB-T!!!

My Buell went from 75hp and 78ft-lbs of torque to 84hp and 83ft-lbs of torque with a very small investment. It's a good motor in the classic hodrod sense. IMO it seems like the horsepower wars are more for bragging rights than anything else. Nobody wants to go home in shame knowing their buddies all wailed 'em on the highway. I don't ride with those types.

One time I beat an individual on a 9R Kawi at 5 consecutive lights. On the other hand, a guy with an R1 once embarrased me totally from a stop. What ever, the Buell is still always a good time, for it is far more than the sum of its parts, or its stats.

Don't know that much about the new XB9, but i rode an xb12. the torque is a little different than my x-1, but still a strong motor. I like my buell because it doesn't whine like an asian bike. it has all the power I need. the perfect motor for a new Buell would be the V-rod motor. Liquid cooled, v-twin and very easy to build power. it is the 21st century, the basic air cooled harley v-twin design is close to 100 yrs old. Update a little. the bike has 21st century styling, how about a motor to match. The asian v-twin water cooled bikes run like hell and still sound good and have the torque. Just my humble opinion.

Tom_b - I don't know much about motors, so this is an honest question. There is an article on the Buell website where Erik is talking about why it was a better for the engines to be air cooled: http://www.buell.com/en_us/brag/fuell/catchingup.asp

Looks like you disagree. Do you think the webpage is just PR because they have an air cooled engine, or are they going after something different from what you are?

Tom,
Suggest you buy one of the Japanese twins. I like my motorcycle engines air cooled. Simple, artful, clean, efficient.

Show me one of your so-called advanced Asian V-Twins that can come anywhere close to the fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions performance of a Buell. Is it more advanced to have to adjust valve lash? Is it more advanced to have cam chain or gear driven cams? Is it more advanced to have a radiator, waterpump, a couple quarts of coolant, a thermostat, a catch reservoir/overeflow container, and a bunch of tubing. Or is it more advanced to have a ducted forced air sensor controlled cooling system?

If the current XB engine is close to 100 years old, so are the Japanese engines. Not sure when the overhead valves hit the engine scene, but I know HD had an overhead cam OHV race bike back in the '20s.

Don't fall victim to the marketing myth and hype of the Japanese repliracers. Too late I guess. I should say shed the belief that the current Buell engine is antiquated. It ain't. DDFI, 6,800 rpm rev limit (7,500 for the XB9's), 49mm semi-downdraft throttle body, ducted sensor controlled forced air cooling, variable tuned exhaust system, 103 HP... It ain't your Daddy's Harley engine.

Blake,

The very basics of that enging are very old and very simple.

The fact that all the controls for the engine management systems are modern is another story and quite impressive.

I like my S1 because of its simplicity,

How many Jap Inline 4s can honestly be rebuilt in a matter of hours and whose engine parts are so readily accessible from HD and aftermarket companies?

I think I'll keep the S1 for a while yet.

AND the damm thing just sweats Attitude.

Last Sunday when I stopped by the Targa Race where the cars were parked, I was already there and a crowd was around looking at the cars. I can tell you that when the S1 fired up as I was leaving most turned and looked to see what was started and continued to look as it rolled away.

Hey Blake, if I had "fallen victim" to the hype of the japanese repliracers, I would own one and not be on this forum. Like I stated above above, I like my Buell, The handling, sound and just plain attitude . I had to work to try to find one when I bought mine as there is no dealer close to here and not many used ones pop up. I have owned 4 asian bikes, 2 german bikes and 2 english bikes. They all had they own quirks and problems. The asian technology on those motors is quite impressive as is the Buell. An XB12 is no cake walk to work either as a buell tech I talked to in Topeka told me before I purchased my X-1 this why I bought a used instead of new. Just like GM updated the old V8's with reverse flow cooling, crank trigger ignition and more advanced computer control to make better power and fuel economy, the v-rod motor does the same for the american v-twin, even though it took the germans to work out the bugs. As stated above, just an opinion, not trying to poke anyone with a stick.

Yeah pretty much the same Newfie. I also thought this was a hypothetical question since I have yet to see a bike that can do everything to make everyman happy. I like the reference to angry beavers. Norm Rules!
