John called me this afternoon. The serial number is relevent to size according to John. He says to call a company named Gearhardt in Texas for help with sizing the units. I told him he should check in here and answer some questions for you guys. He said he was going to do just that...
Maybe tomorrow, he had just gotten back from a mini vacation today.

The guy from the company has gotten a big Govt. contract to do something else. This portion of his business has been over for awhile, I guess. He just kept it going to try to help folks out.
If John doesn't pop in to give you some info soon, I will try to get the number for Gearhardt. That is unless someone on the board already has it. They may be able to help you out.

Blake I'm well aware of the 916 valve train reliability issues - if it fails on mine I won't bitch about it here. After all Ducati didn't rebuild the top end under warranty on the one I bought - but if they do I'll make certain they fit the correct size gaskets - otherwise it could lead to CONROD FAILURE!

Revving the ever loving crap out of a motor over and over and over while it's sitting there in neutral has been known to cause rod failure . Absolutely amazing to me that thing didn't spit the crank right out the bottom, Duncan must've done a hell of a job.

You've never seen me ride or treat my Buell in any manner worse or better than anyone of us that visited Croix the year you did. To suggest otherwise is foolish and damn childish.

I'd be the first to admit I've enjoyed my S1W to the fullest of its abilities, after all wasn't it meant to be for that purpose? Well actually no it wasn't and that's why the product was floored from the off despite what the advertising blurb claimed - and that is why and how I ended up with a more powerful efficient and STRONGER engine built under warranty and authorized by HD\Buell UK .

That more powerful efficient and STRONGER engine ran PERFECT for 9500 dealer serviced miles, seeing fresh Mobil 1 and new filter every 2500 miles but after it was returned to me after top end warranty work at the dealer, where it turned out the incorrect size head gaskets were installed, the rear S&S conrod snapped due to it spending 1400 (careful as it happens) miles with the piston on it slightly kissing the head.

You might claim to be a good engineer but how the fuck you could conclude my engine failed due to me revving it up in neutral often is beyond me. Surely you're not that clever are you? No you're not but you are a smart arse where I'm concerned so my suggestion is don't bait me or I will bite.

By the way, how is your ex-star rider Richard doing at the moment? As your LSR effort is a collective Badweb \ Team Elves deal shouldn't you be sharing your falling out with OUR rider with us all or is it to embarrassing for you?

does anybody know if a HD vtwin is more susceptible to engine failure if run at full throttle in 5th gear almost daily than most other engines? this is what my local bike shop told me was the case with my bike when i blew the motor(not a harley dealer btw).

Tripp, in answer to your question..NO. The v-twin engine is no more susceptible to failures than any other engine.

that's what i figured, i was also told that type of engine "wasn't made to run at high speeds for long periods" and "if you want an engine that can handle your riding style you need an inline 4"

It might be a soap opera to you guys but when someone wants to kick you when you're down, and knowing that my settlement with the Buell dealer is in the hands of lawyers, it's a low trick to suggest I killed my motor when all the interested parties could read that kind of shit here.

It shows one thing though - the man will stoop to any level to have it his way and that's what I don't like about the guy - but I knew that anyway so I'll not kiss his ignorant arse again unless he kisses my arse first.

By the way 916's are shit and I'm an arse hole.

Butting in real late here after reading this thread! Mark, good to see you buddy! I'll catch you at Maxton in March of 2004. Pammy, hope you can make a trip up from Fla. also, would be nice to meet you.

Mark, you were mentioning your 149 & some change run with your Sportster Sport. Aaron was telling BluzM2 he needs 120 horsies to go 150+ on his Buell at Bonny. Apples & Oranges going on here mostly. You need more HP at Bonny at any rate to do the same as near sea level at Maxton. Mark, Crim's 1350 engine did 153 & some change on 107 HP. Generally, speaking & not correct in every case, I believe it takes Buells more HP to do the same speeds as a low slung, narrow front ended Sportster. Paul Batts may be one of the exceptions here.

Busting that 150 Mark, may take a lot more HP, I was thinking you all had a great tailwind that last meet also, I'm not sure. Everytime I've had the bike at Maxton, it's running into the wind after a front has passed it seems. Anyway, it would be interesting to see if you can break it at less than 100 HP, I think it can be done with everything in your favor.

Hi Dale, how goes it? Now this is pure speculation, but I suspect Mr.W's XL was running on a rather conservative tune this past season. Just a feeling. Jump on in there if you got something to share Mark o'buddy. I for one am looking forward to some fast stuff from Mark AND Kathy this coming year. He has at least one new weapon I know of. At any rate that is about the sweetest XL around. A real looker.
And ol' Slide is another one to look out for in 1350.
On the Sportster vs. Buell thing...interesting debates to be had for sure. I believe each have their advantages.

Excellent point, Dale. It really is apples and oranges. I had not considered the Buell being a taller and wider bike. It would also be too hard to compare Maxton to Bonneville as the variables include traction, track distance and air density. With the less dense air at Bonneville, a motor will produce less power but it is easier to push a given object through thinner air. Thanks for pointing that out.

Paul, thank you for the compliment on my Sport.I love her but she is no where near as attractive as your Ironhead is. That bike is awesome!

As far as the conservative tune, Paul may be correct. I finished assembly of the top end the weekend before. No time to Dyno. Then the hangover. Is that what you were referring to, Paul? I was late to the track Saturday. Feeling green all day long I did not touch the carb or timing. Would it have mattered? I don't know. After the race I was awarded the new nickname "Mr Green".

tripp: i have flogged a sportster extensively, high rpm tank after tank of fuel, and it has been stone reliable. really i beat the bloody snot out of this bike, i have revved it to 7000 many times, ran the highway at 5000 rpm for 30 minutes at a stretch, and just generally do burnouts, wheelies, and behave like a complete idiot. i would not say that the basic 45 degree aircooled v twin sportster engine is trouble prone or unsuited for hi speed highway use. if you can stand the vibration.

now thats the spirit!! i love my bike, but sometimes i'm mean to it. i love to feel the wind hitting me in the face(visor) at 130+mph, i'm hoping with my new nallinized buell she'll be able to handle the flogging. i always figured that if it couldn't handle it they'd make it tac out at 5000 redline. i like to behave like an idiot too!!!hehe
