Ok I need to know a few things about the X1 tank
1) are there diffrent tanks?
2) are there diffrent covers and if so are they interchangeable?
3) how is it secured in the back?
4) how do you change one for carb use?

No... tanks are the same.... 99 covers had vents and 00 and up did not... they are interchangeable. For the rear mount.

There are two ways to change a FI tank for carburetor use. Many choose the non-destructive method in case they decide to change back; the fuel pump is gutted and the original line is lengthened and routed to the carburetor.

I went the other way. I removed the fuel pump and its disintegrating plastic screen, plugging the holes with bolts (head on the inside), nylon washers under the bolt head, and flat washers and nuts under the tank. I got a M2 petcock, drilled holes in the low spot of the tank back by the battery to mount it (be careful not to hit the battery or the rear head with the petcock), and used flange nuts to hold the mounting bolts with a goodly layer of Permatex #1 (The hardening type) to seal the bolts and petcock body to the tank. No leaks in six years.

In either case, the fuel filter can remain in place.

It is secured in the back by a bolt through a plate with teeth.

From what I can tell there is a hold down bracket not the screw and plate like the other tubers

Just had mine off. There is a spot it slides into by the forks and then the tank just kinda sits on the frame and is held in back by the tank cover and seat latch bracket. Nothing actually holding just the tank.

I don't think all the tanks are the same. I believe the early 99 ones had a pad on the bottom side towards the rear that would rub on a rocker box cover. The later ones has a different design pad in that location that allowed for more clearance.

I have a '99, which I have owned since new, and no part of the tank rubs on any part of the rocker boxes.

Robr, I believe it happens when the isolators start going bad. Here are pics of the difference. Note the square vs rounded corner right above the rear rocker box cover.

My 99 tank rubs on the engine, not at speed, or when parked, but only at specific RPMs. I stuck a 1/8" piece of rubber under the rear tank mount. That raised the tank enough to clear the rocker box, but not enough to notice that anything has been altered. Nothing wrong with my isolators (though bad ones absolutely would drop the tank onto the engine) they're the new kind.
