I'm putting a CV carb on a 59 Panhead and also plan on putting a CV on my '77 Shovel.
Does anyone have any idea what a starting place for the jetting might be? Needles? Or any other info/experience.

I am not a carb specialist by any matter of means, but those who are probably would like a bit more info about your motors, such as cubic capacity, compression, cams, air cleaner, exhaust system, etc, if they vary from stock.

Just my .02ยข

PS. I have a Screaming Eagle (Mikuni) 42 that is like new, that I could be talked out of.

Most of the EVO engines had 185 main jets and #42 slow speed jets on their CV-40's on arrival. I say had because H-D is no longer selling any bikes with carbs.

This is a site that has a lot of useful info on the EVO and Twin Cam engines. They have good sections on working on the CV-40.

Many of us that had or have Buells or other bikes with the CV-40 went to a #45 slow speed jet and uncapped the idle mixture screw to set the idle mixture. That is a cure for the too lean as delivered condition that goes to meeting emission standards but makes for miserable starting, warm up, and slow speed riding.

The #45 and idle mixture screw is a must have mod as far as I'm concerned, that and some other carb mods are detailed here:

I think you'll find some of that info useful on getting started with those carbs on your bikes. I think the CV-40 has the potential to be a good carb for the earlier engines.

Some of the early H-D carbs were not renowned for being either good or trouble free. Many that explains all the after market carbs that came around over the years.

Thanks Jack and thats the reason I asked here first because of the willingness of Badweb members to help.
But, I really just need a starting point!
Just trying to save a little tuning time. I know I'm not the first person to do this swap, but the others may not be on Badweb. If a web search doesnt reveal any hints, I'll just start with whats in the carb and go from there.

Thanks for the offer of the Mikuni, but I already have a half dozen CV carbs around and a full selection of jets, unless you were going to donate it?

PS they're both basic 'stock' engines, stock compression with aftermarket exhausts. Nothing real special.

46/175 seems to be the consensus starting point. I'll post after I get it tuned in (which may be some time).
