I'm thinking the first graphic as a pocket type deal on the front and the second on the back with "The race that never was..." underneath.

"how far off is the rider hanging is one that comes to mind "

That's why I was thinking "same rider". It would be extremely easy to skew the results though. You mention that cars won the Car and Driver skid pad test and further mention "of course"... Why "of course"? Don't bikes generally pull more lateral G's?

Why don't they test the skidpad capabilities of bikes? It would just require a large circle and you just ride around that circle as fast as you can. Whichever achieves the fastest speed wins. Standardize on a certain circle size, warm up the tires and lean it over for ten laps...

Not taking sides
BUT for information to the public.
A private Bike mag in Europe did a independent test and the XB12 actually has a faster corner speed than a R1

M1 - nossir, bike can't generate the same lateral Gs as good cars -- the answer is two words (although I'm loathe to type them here), contact patch

if you think about the traction available to handle lateral acceleration for, say, a vette, vs, oh, I dunno, lemme pick something out at random . . .. an R1 (duckin and runnin), it's easily understood -- the explaination in C&D was far more engineeringese, discussing weight per square inch of contact patch as measured in furlings per fortnight or some such, but bikes got beat like gongs in the comparo

only place they did, though, other than top speed (this was some time ago, and a high buck Porshe would out top end an open class bike, although that MAY have changed, but likely not, as aerodynamics rear their ugly heads at speed, and even Motogp bikes are barn doors compared to a big Merc or Ferrarri)

Roger, you're going to open a whole new can of worms with the t-shirt, as you'll then have to explain to all & sundry what it's all about whenever you wear it.
After 10 mins of explication they'll look at you & say
"Buell? isn't that a sort of Harley?"

but what do I know, I'm just a cook!

Buells are my favorite bikes and are a ton of fun to ride. But i love all motorcycles, every type and style.

And even if i`ll never own a late model Jap liter bike, you have to be able to appreciate their performance without taking it as a personal attack against Buells. Just love riding and keep your mind open!

But only in the BBS Dreamworld are they going to beat any new literbike around a racetrack or in a drag race given equal riders.

I just rode an 03 GSXR 1000 yesterday. The bike can lift the frontend in 3rd at 120mph with just roll of the throttle, wow. The scary part is that the 04 R1 pulls much, much harder on top, but gives aways quite a bit of midrange.

but gives aways quite a bit of midrange.

Easily rectified too by a simple gearing change..go down 1 in the front & then add a free flowing exhaust & dump the cat. Adds 16hp right in the midrange.

I think there are plenty of environments where an XB would be a better choice then an R1. "real" racers might not consider those "race tracks", but I would. If I was told to compete in any environment where top speeds stay under 90mph, I would take an XB with good rubber over an R1.

It is no small coincidence that all my street riding is under 90mph as well. Heck, I almost always slow down for the straight bits.

I think the point is that if you took an R1 and a 9R, and handed each to 99% of the *riders* on this board, and raced them on a track that emphasizes handling, the better rider would win on *either* bike.

The R1 has a much higher top speed, and is much faster in a straight line. The R1 is a remarkably good handling bike, especially for track work, though if you ride it to those limits on the *street* you will be dead or arrested in less then a year.

I think what is remarkable is not that the R1 is such a fantastic bike, but that for the part of the performance you would use for anything approaching legal street riding, that an XB is as good, if not better. Thats the amazing part to me.

He listed 2 in Texas. Like im goin to drop everything right now this year & head for Texas..gimme a break. This was already decided awhile back it was going to be late spring early summer next year. I said before any track except OHR & I meant it. But there is no way in hell I can make anything work this year & Blake already knows that.

Greg,

You no read good. One of the tracks is in Hallet, OK, near Oklahoma City. And no one ever limited the event to only this calendar year. I even posted a link to the 2004 CMRA schedule while advising that next year's schedule will be very similar, so you could plan accordingly.

So bring it on anytime Greg. Like I said last week . . . twice...

quote:

I'll gladly meet Greg during any CMRA race weekend at OHR, Motor Sports Ranch (Cresson, TX, near Ft. Worth) or Hallet (near OK City).

...and...

So here is MY very simple and straight forward challenge to you Greg:

Since you think I don't have a "hope in hell" of lapping a track faster than you on your R1 even on street tires, I hereby challenge you to back up that assertion. I hereby challenge you to race me at any of the CMRA events at any of the three tracks that I mentioned above, two of which I've never seen let alone ridden. If you either finish ahead of me or run a quicker lap than my best lap, I'll pay for your race entry fee.

...and...

Sounds to me like we have a race. Next race (after this weekend, no I am not entering) at Motorsports Ranch in Cresson, TX is the weekend of October 9-10. Rider's school and practice on Saturday, practice and 8 lap sprint races on Sunday. Just say the word, me and the Buell will be there wearing some nice new full soft DOT racing tires.

Next chance other than OHR would likely be in May of next year.

May 2005??? Will take Dyna at least that long to get certified and his bike race prepped beyond the duct tape stage not to mention log more track time to get the feel of his bike in a WFO environment.

Toss in the Wisconsin Winter and the cost of these preparatory steps and perhaps 2006 might be a better bet. IMHO
