This is what some people are going to resort to. The Smart car has it headed in this, the wrong direction. Just think about when those suckers get plastered by an Escalade! Yummy! |

I cannot remember the name of the car I rode in Poland in 1978, but it similar to these small cars. They were ubiquitous on the the streets of Lodz then. Had, I think, a transverse parallel twin engine, and the entire front opened for the door. Haven't thought about them in a long time, I'll have to try to find a picture of one. |

I showed a friend and he was amazed that they built anything like that. He did point out if you hit one on a Buell it'd total the car and you'd ride home! |

Wow, I cannot find it on the internet. I was an exchange student in Poland in 1978 (back when it was Commie) and there was a very common kind of car there, but I don't know where it was made. I thought Poland. Cannot remember the name of it. It looked like the back half of a VW Beetle that had been sliced in half just aft of the doors, and instead of side doors, it had wide door that completely covered the blunt front. The single door also functioned as the front of the vehicle. It seated 2 (or 3 skinny students) and I think it had a 2 cylinder transverse engine. It may not have been made in Poland, but I never saw them in western Europe. I can't find anything like it using Google, very surprising. |

I wouldn't have believed it was BMW. It was 30 years ago that I saw it, but yeah that sure looks like it. |

If I'd have realised you were stuck for remembering, I'd have spoken up earlier. I owned an Isetta when I was in my early 20's. I've actually ridden in a few too. Britain had a bit of an obsession in the 1960's with microcars, such as the Peel and the Isetta, but once they'd fell out of fashion and the average family saloon became increasingly obtainable for many, there was a time when you couldn't give microcars away. Now most are worth several thousand pounds, and even rough examples command a high price. Heinkel, Messersmhit, Bond, Berkeley, are all worth checking out. A single seat microcar was manufactured in my home town for a short while too. The Bamby.

As you can see, the die hards kept trying until the early 80's, lol.
