Please don't make this a "DDFI is great thread" I'm really not willing to learn about EFI or even a TPS reset..ETC : )

I have read here somewhere that a few guys did a carburetor conversion by just changing the manifold and bypassing the fuel pump and of course adding a carburetor without changing ignition. Will this work?

Or at least work for now?

Have you ever jetted a bike before? Or do you already have jetting information?

Should be possible, though I wouldn't be suprised if you also had to change the ECM.

Basically, just go get a bunch of M2 parts from an ebay partout (including cams and the carb) and put them in. The jetting will still be a bit whacked because the heads are ported differently, but you will be close. And if you are committed to a jetting exercise you could stick with the X1 cams and jet for that if you want (which saves you the trouble of a cam swap).

Pammy / CycleRama might be a good source of information. I bet she ditched the FI for her 200HP yellow beast of an X1.

Jetting should be about the same as the 98 S3. Pretty sure you'll need an ignition. Lots of those available aftermarket too.

I did it to my S3 with a M2 module, coil, and tachometer,a XL cam position sensor, and a Mikuni 42. Wires to the module are color-coded; I lap soldered them with shrink wrap to eliminate the Deutsch connectors. Kept the cams.

The only downside for you overseas, you have to send
them your ignition module for modification.

"because the heads are ported differently"

That's news to me. Are not all TS heads the same?

I put an X1 engine in my m2 - carb. I had to change the timing cup to single fire. I believe the X1 is dual fire so your ignition module and I think coil need to match. Carb I used a 48 primary and a 200 secondary. The xls sportsters also were dual fire but dual plug so you might look into using one those ignition modules - not sure there. Or switch to single fire cup and ignition module and coil you should be safe - sportster parts should work. You will need a carb intake as well.

I did it to my S3T, just put a carb on it, I didn't cut a single wire, just bagged and tagged the unused connectors so it could be put back easily, de-pinned the connector for the check engine light. I think the biggest issue would be the fuel pump, I was fortunate to pick up a matching carbureted tank. Go for it!

I can confirm X1 is dual fire. The coil is actually two coils in one box.

Thank you Blks1, That's what I was looking for.. I was assuming the ECM and stock ignition on the X1 would work for a carb in a pinch. I am planning to pickup a new ignition system for her at some point. I just don't know what it's worth to me yet. For the fuel pump bypass I was going to use a inline petcock. I already have a CV carb. It's a take off from a 03 TC 88" right now I'm looking for a manifold for it.. Did you use the V.O.E.S. when you did yours?

I used a Custom Chrome flanged intake with an adapter; it has the VOES take-off and I use a Sportster VOES.

"For the fuel pump bypass I was going to use a inline petcock"

I think you'll need to bypass the stock outlet or at least remove the pressure regulator. I don't think gas will gravity feed from the tank. At least, I don't remember ever spilling any fuel when I've removed the tank.

Harleyelf, How did the adapter work out for you? Do you wish you bought a CV manifold of or is it all good?

Hootowl, I kinda figured it was a given.. My plan was to gut the tank or just make a new plate for it with a welded bung.. I found the petcock in my toolbox that I think came from the same bike the carb came off of.

The way I have read is remove the pump and all from the tank. Use a thread in plug with nut on the inside of the tank sealed with gas resistant rubber. Then in the other hole use a petcock that requires a nut and seal from the inside. I have never done it but have read this a few times on other mod pages.

Man if I can do that it would be a time saver.. I know they sell tank conversion for the efi sportster.. However I know that's not going to fit.

The adapter works fine. I put a M2 petcock at the lowest point of the tank, back by the battery. Removed the fuel pump and put bolts in both holes with the heads and nylon washers inside the tank and flat washers and the nuts below. No leaks in six years. Place the petcock carefully; you must miss the head and the battery. I used flange nuts inside the tank to reduce the chance of fracturing the skin of the tank. More nylon washers and type 1 Permatex on the threads, allowed to cure before the tank ever had gasoline put back in.

The VOEs is to allow timing to be optimized. I imagine you can run without but you may get more performance with it. Stock module two timing curves and the voes switches between the two based on vacuum.
