Is there any reason a Sportster engine can't fit in a tuber chassis (assuming correct vintage). I know the 2004+ bikes won't work, but are 2003-earlier Evo XL engines fair game?

The reason I'm asking is I found an engine-less X1 for sale near me. The motor I'd want to put in this thing would get an XB top end and cams, anyway, so as long as the bottom ends are interchangable I think I should be good. Wouldn't even matter if it were an 883 I don't think.

There is no front hemi mount on the XL cases. Other than that, I don't see why it wouldn't fit. There might be a boss for it though, since HD made both Sportster and Buell cases. Why make two different castings?

I saw that bike listed (in galaway?) and emailed him a couple times to see if he was planning on parting it out(hes not). That seems like a decent price for a complete (less engine bike). Heck I was even thinking about grabbing it and parting it out myself to make some $.

There is something there - doesn't look like a boss and doesn't look a threaded hole... might be some kind of locator pin for something?

I'm thinking you could make it work. Don't know how much trouble you might have as there were some mounting things done during engine assembly. Someone on this board will know the details.

May be moot - If I'm patient I think I can find a good price on a complete bike and not spend a whole lot more.

The flywheels out of the models that would work (1993-2003 Sportsters) are heavier than that which came factory in the X1's, and do not like getting spinned up to much past 6-6.5K rpm

I looked at doing this to my M2 while I had my 1250 motor fixed but I couldnt find a Sporty motor any chaeper than a Buell.

The cost of either was the same as gettin my existing motor fixed so I just kinda gave up.

My M2 is still awaiting funds to repair it.

There's an S3 on local craigslist that has been crashed - ad says they want $475 bucks for it!. Here's the link:

I have no other info on it, but maybe the motor is good and could get someone back on the road.

Looks like just what Mark is looking for. Cheaper than a Sportster and it has the heim mount.

These models used a different style front engine mount, that utilized a stud on one side of the assembly. To get the stock tube frame upper mount to work, Remove this stud, from there the tuber stock mount bolt can be used. The stock motor mount bolts on a standard evo sportster front cylinder head are both 3/8"

I wouldn't use the Sporty heads, but the flywheel issue was something I hadn't thought of - I knew it, just decided to forget it.

I found a disassembled sportster engine on craigslist for $600. I'm okay with it apart since I'd want to do the top end, anyway.

I think I'm going to just wait and buy a complete bike, though...

This sounds like a perfect excuse to put a 100 inch S&S motor in the best handling tuber made.

S2's had Sportster flywheels. Mine, with Thunderstorm top end, performs just fine. The only noticable difference is, it doesn't rev as quickly as my S1W.

Something in the back of my brain thinks the cases are different (XL-Buell) because of the swingarm mounting block, though...but lord knows I've been wrong before.

The mounting bloc just bolts right on. I've actually seen a number of custom sportsters with tuber swingarms, they just bolted the mounting block on the back (and then figured out a rear shock solution).

Buell used bigger bolts on the back of the case.
