I went on a long ride this weekend and hit 118mph there and back on a nice long straight flat stretch over a 1 mile long. I wanted to hit an even 120 but as I neared it the bike started to feel unstable so I backed off. Was this fear, vibration, wind, tire balance I dont know.

Seating position & common sense.

I cannot in good conscience tell you to ride at excessive, ill eagle speeds with your engine at redline. It may NOT be a good idea. ( Try getting low on the tank, the wind on your torso on a M2 can pull the front up & make it squirrrrley! )

You should be able to hit about 125-133 with the race ignition box. With the stock one, the power gets "soft" about 118-125 & may make it feel unstable. ( the stock box retards timing before shutting off spark )

hmm maybe it was the retarded timing, I was laying on the tank cause with no fairings or windshield it gets rough over 80.

I did 131 and change at Bonneville on my 2000 M2.
That was with the hamcan (no filter) and a Daytona Boss exhaust slip on.
I have the stock ignition module but the timing is set a bit advanced to make up for the retard on top end.

On the dyno, it hit the rev limiter at about 134 or so.
On my "perfect" passes at Bonniville I was all the way into the rev limiter.
The rest was wheel spin (the salt was a bit damp).
Body position was critical. Very slight adjustments would change the speed up to 5 MPH.
Makes you really appreciate the guys that really go fast...

My bike redlined on the dyno around 120, but I'm two teeth up on my rear sprocket.

Around 220Km/h = 136 MPH on the Autobahn.
M2 is lighter(around 20 kilos) and heads are stage 1,plus race can, header, modul ,HSR42 and forcewinder.

umm... 135mph indicated, prior to the race ignition, (was within the first few weeks of owning it, on a 45 degree night back in March) since the ignition, dunno yet.

this would be on my 99 M2, pro-series air cleaner, and V&H exhaust .. now with the race ignition.

Oh - laying on the tank, feet on the rear pegs ..

'02 M2 pro-series kitted will indicate 130,,dunno actual number, and that's about all she's got.

Has a real happy spot @ 110 where it seems to live and breathe the best of all.

135 indicated on my 2000 M2 with V&H and Forcewinder... felt like it was hitting the limiter. I'm sure a stock M2 could pull a lower final drive ratio for more top speed.

I have the race ignition now also, but I haven't tried to top it out.

Can you still get a race ignition for the M2? I have a 99 M2 Cyclone with modifications to the air intake and exhuast. It runs fantastic even with 21000+k on it. I never knew about a race ignition. Might make mine run even better.

120 indicated on an X1 and plenty of throttle left. As much tuck as a 6' 3" rider can do with that little fly deflector. Did start to feel squirrly, I didn't want to go any faster. I often wind it up to 110-115 on a flat straight local highway for maybe 20 or 30 seconds.

My old, mostly stock 1997 M2 got up to 120 before road conditions required me to back off... though I don't think I could've gone much faster. It kinda had that "what do you think you're trying to do?" feeling about it.

I once got my (even older) 1976 BMW R90/6 up to 125... but that was downhill, with a tailwind.

I believe, ( please correct me someone if I'm wrong ) that the differences in modules are....

1. The race box has a hard stop at 6800 rpm. The stocker retards ignition, then shuts down at 6800. ( thats right no change in redline )

2. The race box has more advance in the latter part of the rpm band than the stocker, giving the same power as a stocker low but more high, unless you re- time the stocker to the same point, then the stocker loses at the bottom. Just a wee bit.

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/10398.html?1059591514

I base comment #1 on something I heard, somewhere, and the way the bike behaves with the different boxes. On My 2001 M2, the speedo needle slows down it's climb over 120, it's still climbing, but slower. Both boxes top me out at 132-135 indicated. The stock one seems to stutter it's way up that last bit, & the race one just goes then stops. Am I imagining this?

In either event, I have a race kit for the 1999-200 M2 on order from e-bay. I already have the 2001-2002 box, ( I got it when I heard they were to be discontinued ) so I MAY have a 1999-2000 box to get rid of, IF what comes is what I hope I ordered. I thought the 2000 pipe & aircleaner will fit the 2001. ( Fingers crossed, prays ) If I'm wrong on that, will some one tell me & I'll take the ribbing as an E-bay idiot.

So Aesquire, how much for the box if you end up with a spare one?

The pipe and CF airfilter will fit your 2001 model.

1. The race box has a hard stop at 6800 rpm. The stocker retards ignition, then shuts down at 6800. ( thats right no change in rev limit)

From what my '99 M2 does.. I think I'm going to have to disagree a bit - I may be wrong, and every bike has it's own quirks, but since installing the race ignition I have not hit the rev limiter, IMO -the stocker hits the rev limiter right when you 'feel' it should have that little extra, I don't get this with the race ignition, it pulls right where it 'feels' you should shift. I have never looked at the tach when I hit the rev limiter with the stocker, so I can't say where it hit for sure, I go more so by seat of the pants feel, and with the race ignition it feels like it pulls much longer and harder than with the stock unit. And I have seen it (glancing at the tach) rise steadily to just under 6800 before shifting.

Let's just say the 'butt-o-meter' test says ... OHHHH YEAAAAA !!!

Whew! Thanks!

I dunno, It's in transit. 1/2 retail?

Hmm, I'm not usually hitting redline while shifting, (except under that one bridge, great sound ) I'm talking about 5th gear. I could be wrong. I frequently am.

Unless they have changed them the stocker is as described above.
Soft retard then hard wall at 6800
The race module is the exact same except no retard at the top.
If I remember correctly the advance curve is the same for both.
The dyno pulls Aaron did showed no difference except the above items.

i've never hit rev limiter at top speed with race ignition, indicated 138, bike solid as a rock with no shake. 1250kit, buell race kit, force pipe.

140+ mph into the 7000 rpm (Dyna 2000 ignition) rev limit. Rock solid stable.

I noticed mine was steady and stable at speed as well, those who aren't stable at those speeds might not have the suspension tuned properly for their size an weight, just a thought.

I did my speed run on 207s and it was stable all the way to the stock limiter.

i hit my 7k redline (compufire ign) in fifth with stock gearing, whatever that factors out to be. my speedo sensor was broken at the time. ive hit low to mid 130's without hitting the limiter. havent done that in a long time though. bike was stable, but windy. no fairing makes things interesting and noisy.

85 it the top speed so far! Haven't ridden it much, but I like going slow fast more than just fast, if you know what I mean. I'm still working on lean angles...

I just put in a Race Ignition, and it sure seems like I can feel the difference in performance even just putting around, well below 4500 rpm. I have typical mods, a Forcewinder intake, V&H muffler. Not a big difference, but let's call it a 'perceptible' difference.

125-130 by the speedo (was glancing rather quickly to see speed). The bike felt like it had more in it, but it started to feel a little wobbley.

Yep, from time to time I actually get my bike running good.
