I have a 2000 Blast and recently I've been finding that I need to put the battery on a slow charger about every other week.

I ride it to work everyday (short trip to and from jobs) so I wouldn't think the battery should run down like this.

I just wanted to check if this is normal with you guys before I start tearing out & replacing the charging system.

By the way Buellistic if you see this, where did you get your shifter linkage from and how does you rear brake set up look on the other side. pic please...

Kronichood, Welcome to the Thumper forum!

I would check for any voltage draw while the bike is shut off, disconnect the negative cable from the battery and see if there is any measurable voltage between the battery and the cable. Next I would check to see if your charging system is putting out, by measuring battery voltage(should be 12.5-12.75) while the bike is off and while it is running and a fast idle(should be 13+volts). I would also start looking for poor battery connections, grounds and wire lug looseness.

If your charging voltage shows the same as the battery voltage what I would do is check your stator output, you should see 24-28 volts AC across the two pins on the stator plug when the bike is running. If you get nothing or something much less I would suspect that.

If you don't already have one, you'll need to purchase a multimeter to measure the voltages. You can find them online but just as inexpensively at a local RadioShack.

How old is the battery? Original-replace it. 4 years old or more and its probably bad.

i am having the same problem with my 01 blast where is the plug from the stator located at is it the plug right behind the left footpeg?

Yes that is the location of the plug for the stator. It is usually held by a cable tie. If you need any help, email me, I have replaced my stator twice. I have a 2001 too. The manual explains it all. Use the pdf on here if you don't have one.

well just spent half a day changing the stator out but i dont have the fluid to put back into the primary and will have to wait till tomorrow to see if every thing is working properly

so my issue is pretty much the same as kronichood. bike went from running fine, to needing a new battery (original was 9 yrs old), to needing charging more often than it should. troubleshooting i started with swampy's suggestion and disconnected the negative battery cable and found (while bike is off) it drawing 0.14V. i couldn't figure out checking the resistance across the stator plug pins, so i don't know if the voltage regulator is good or bad.

i recently installed a tach and thought that might be it. i have it wired to the low beam headlight for power. so i disconnected that wire and something was still drawing power. i even took each fuse out one by one to try and see where the issue might be, but that did nothing. i should clarify, when i say low beam i mean a separate bulb since i have the XB12r headlight setup on. i thought it may be the headlight setup, but it's been on the bike over a year with no issues. things went haywire after the tach went on.

please help!

i don't know what the heck i did, but i went out to mess around a bit more. subsequently blew my low beam light. still can't get a reading of any kind across the stator pins. could it be zero? also, now something seems to be drawing more off the battery. with negative battery cable off it now reads 0.27V.

i trickle charged the battery overnite, had a 13.4 charge this morning. put it on the bike just a minute ago and now it says something is drawing 0.99V! what. i can't for the life of me figure out what's drawing power while the bike is off. i tried unplugging just about everything i could think of and the negative cable to the battery would still read 0.99V. i'll see if it holds its charge overnite....

Ok, a couple of things to check.

What you are saying is you have a current draw, and you want to find out what it is.

With your fully charged battery, start unplugging things. When the current draw stops, you have your culprit.

Now if that is not the question you were asking....

If you are not charging, you unplug your stator, switch your VOM to AC volts and read across the pins when the engine is running, It should be around 28 volts AC. Now plug things back together, hook your VOM across the battery and check your DC reading. Start the little bugger up and check the reading, it should go up....right?
If you don't get your 28 volts DC your stator or wiring to it is probably bad, maybe a magnet. If you have the 28 or so volts AC and dont have a higher DC reading while running compared to not running across your battery you probably have a bad voltage regulator.

I think it is simple as that.

thanks swampy. i actually found a voltage regulator on eBay for $23, so i bought it regardless. as for the current draw, i'm fresh out of ideas. i tried unplugging just about everything. i even pulled each fuse one by one, then all of them, and it was still drawing. i'll try again after work tomorrow and see what i come up with.

also, i couldn't get a reading on the stator pins when i was trying. my "electrical" buddy is stopping by tomorrow to help so hopefully we come up with something. could the reading across the pins really be zero? that would mean my stator is shot right?

okay, so here's where i'm at. i'm pretty sure it's the stator. i got no reading across the pins or holes or anything, neither AC or resistance. that, and i literally unplugged everything on the bike i could get my greasy fingers on, and something is still drawing from the battery.

i've read a lot about stators here on the forum, one question though, where do i get the aftermarket one??

i was told by a diesel mechanic (basing his suggestion on a traditional auto alternator) that if part of the stator is bad (bad coil or something) that it could draw from the battery. any truth to that?

final conclusion: replacing voltage regulator (already bought it) and ordering new stator. let's cross our fingers!!

If you have to replace the Stator, then you would have to replace the Voltage regulator in time as well, however, try replacing the Voltage regulator, and you may not have to touch the Stator.

Check for continuity between the Stator pins and ground. Either or, or both, the stator windings are supposed to be insulated from ground.

When you open the primary up, check the stator wires where they run under the retaining plate that holds the wires against the case. The retaining plate has sharp edges and they can cut into and short out the wires.
