I have just recently purchased a 2002 buell blast like tuesday july 31st. I love it! such a light weight cycle for me and its perfect speed for me. I have had much riding experience from mini bikes to dirt bikes but not in the mechanics of the bikes. Typical girl right? lol I did have a mechanic do a basic check over it.

Well anyways my brother took it out for a joy ride today and it quit on him. He says there was no sputtering or spitting at least he can't remember any before he shifted and stalled out, it wouldn't start back up so he had it towed home. the oil is low. I am thinking that the perivous owner ran it with out oil or low oil and now it burning up on me. I am afriad the pistons maybe fried.

I am really hoping it is an easy fix and the pervious owner didn't burn it up and sold it to the dealer i bought it from. I know you can't diagnosis the problem over the internet but a guidance in the right direction would be appreciated. I know enough that 'give it a good cleaning' really means " i don't know what the problem is so hopefully this does the trick'.

Do a search on intake manifold replacement, or DAS Boot. Usually a Good cleaning costs more problems than fix.

Welcome!
Very very Doubtful its the boot, unless it's really really bad it won't just shut the bike down and I'm assuming your blast is stock.
Has it started since? Just a guess would be safety switch problems or ignition, but there are things you can check. But 4 days 'old', I'd see what the dealer has to say (will they fix it for free).

Sorry that's all I can do for now. I'm on my six day with the flu and I have to go back to sleep Thanks for heading my warnings about the carb cleaning

I have search common issues and the ignition module might be the problem. It hasnt started since even with a little gas. But i will also look into the das boot! I am having a friend come over to check the compression today too. I cant imagine there will be anything wrong there cause i had a good maintenance check on it and would think the mechanic would detect that. Its a 10 year bike with only 3200 miles on it but it also has been stored for a while. I know the person before me dumpped it a few times got scared and then never rode it again.

Welcome Malorie. If it has been dropped several times, I would check the BAS (bank angle sensor). It is located under the seat. As Gearheaderiko stated, check also the safety switches. One is at the clutch, the second is the kickstand and the third is the BAS under the seat. The BAS should automatically reset when you turn the ignition off and then on again. If these aren't the culprit, then I would look to your plug and/or ignition. Maybe the coil too.

Thank you all! How much work do these things (blast) really require? A few people have said that they have had to work on them more then they rode them. and i thought that since it was such a basic bike it would be easy to maintain and repair. If it keeps going like this I would be a certified mechanic by the time it get a new one.

That's actually not a bad goal to head towards!LOL They really are easy to work on, yet "hanging" the bike is a little awkward as you can't put it on a bike stand to do certain work. It would behoove you to get an manual if you are serious about getting to know your ride. Just saying.

+1 on getting a service manual. Money VERY WELL SPENT!

Typical issues on a blast are either a safety switch of some kind failing which can be easily remedied by bypassing them, or the rubber intake manifold. Some of the Blasts are starting to get old enough that some other electronic components may need to be replaced such as the ignition. Its also not too bad of a job.

But yeah, my main suggestion, is get the manual. Do as much of the wrenching on your bike yourself as you can. As you get to know how it ticks, you'll be able to fix these little things as they pop up.

Well, I finally was able to fix all the little issues left over from the motor swap, get new tires and go for a ride on Saturday.
Well about 3 miles from home the stock exhaust broke again, this time up by the head, where the pip tapers down, so there is no fixing it.

I have a V&H from the parts bike but the core to the muffler is broken and missing parts. What can I use to fix it?
I am also going to have to make the bracket that goes from the clamp to the lower front mount. Does anyone have pictures or a way to measure the mount, the instructions say it is VHR bracket #311.

I am hoping I can fix this thing for cheep and save my $ to build a EZ LSR style header pipe but with a Magnaflow 11148 muffler this winter.

A Harley short muffler will bolt right up using a U bolt muffler clamp and the old V&H brackets. Stock or aftermarket. You can also get a "cherry bomb" style muffler, cheap too. I've posted pics on Badweb of the mounting-simple.

P3 is just the alpha-numerical designation of the Blast. It means the same thing. The only option the blast has is in seat height (besides colour) and that is changed by using a different interchangeable seat. Otherwise all blasts are essentially the same.

Woo. Blast back online with a new rear wheel bearing & new rear rubber.

: D

The XB9 is a great bike, and the 1125 is a great touring bike, but the Blast just works SO WELL for commuting!

... and I think I need another one so my fiancee & I don't fight over who gets to commute on it.

140/70-16 is the widest. Can not do 80 series. Anything wider than that would need a custom swing-arm, etc.

So I have not been able to get my blast to cold start still! the carb was so gucked up when i got it that you couldn't get fuel into the carb. I have since replaced the rubber baffle/slide, float valve, pilot/main jet 45/170, the boot, the air fuel mix spring/washer/oring, the main needle shimmed 2 washers, a new choke (and verified that it works), disabled all the safeties, and put more carb cleaner through the carb to clear the gunk than i would like. I have tested for air leaks (none) and this damn bike still won't start from cold. I have followed all the guide lines that are posted. I have to block the carb mouth with my hand to get it to suck up some juice for a second and then it will usually start if grumpily. once warm even a bit it will restart. i am about to roll this bike off a cliff and declare it a win. I would take it to harley to fix but i can't even talk basic carb function with them without getting the blank stare of confusion. I trust them to bolt on a pair of handlebars and that would be it. I would really like to get this thing going to give to my son. any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Give you 500 - did you make sure the vacuum line is properly pluged, and that das boot is new and properly on. If you can do that with your hand - vacuum leak - check boot! Make sure air screw is 2 2/3rds out from light seating.

I love my Blast! It's awesome! I have so many ideas to mod the hell out of it - it's a good place to start because it's not too small, but it's got much to be improved on.

I was wondering if there is any way to attach clip on handlebars on the bike. I already have the Superbike handlebars - but I LOVE the look of clip on bars.

Any ideas?

37mm clip-ons. The adjustable kind is best and there are a bunch of different styles to. Yes they bolt on and you probably wont be able to lock your steering. If you're using a stock headlight it will have to be lowered.
Looks great, but can be extremely uncomfortable when compared to the superbike bars. Its up to your preference. "laverda" bars are a good compromise giving you anywhere from superbike to clip-on height in adjustability. But just like the clip-ons some other modifications may be necessary to other parts to make them fit the way you want.

try rotating your bars down into that position, then decide if your comfortable esp. your back - some are, some are not. 37mm is the size needed for clip-ons.

Sorry to have disappeared for so long. . . Life sort of got away from me. I know that I still owe everyone a write up on the luggage system that I constructed with dimensions (which eventually failed - not design related but material driven) and I just posted the brief instructions to my new LED hand guard lights (under lights).

I want to put in a shout out to American Torque who continues to manufacture customization parts for Buells. Their customer service is hard to beat!

What's a good line to run heated grips off on a Blast? I was going to use at the headlight wiring, unless there's something better. I want it keyed to the ignition so they don't get left on.

Hey guys,

First time poster but I have been reading since I bought my Blast 3 months ago. I have a question you guys may be able to help with.

First off, my bike is stock with the exception of EZs stock air box mod. I recently bought a Denso Iridium Racing plug and will be installing that shortly. I have also purchased some new carb jets (45 slow, 170 / 175 main) from my local HD dealer and plan on installing soon. My exhaust header broke recently, so I have ordered the Vance & Hines SS2-R exhaust system. I should be installing that in the next week or so.

My question is in regards to the intake/carb (I considered posting this in the carb section of the Knowledge Vault, but things haven't seemed that lively over there and I thought I would have better luck here first.) I have poured over the intake mod suggestions and haven't seemed to find an answer. I would like to ditch my stock airbox and go for a more free-flowing setup. From what I have read, the options are to buy an intake elbow with filter system from EBay or do the Velocity Stack with Outerwears filter method. As many of you may know, premade intake systems are costly and hard to find. American Sportsbike doesn't carry the Velocity Stacks anymore and they told me the part was discontinued. Therefore, my options seem to be few.

I was wondering if I could use an Outerwears filter with hose clamp over the stock Venturi instead of the Velocity Stack. I realize the stock Venturi isn't as tall so there isn't much space to clamp onto, but it seems like it would work in theory. Would that work? If not, could I buy a carb spacer to the Venturi to make the setup taller and have more room to clamp onto? Where could I find such a spacer?

If neither option is feasible, the only other options I can think of would be to make my own intake using bent metal (I'm thinking HVAC connectors) and attaching a filter to the end using hose clamps. Thoughts or suggestions on how I should start that?

If these options won't work the last option would be to buy a K&N filter (BU-500 I believe) and keep the airbox on. I have already done EZs mod so that should help breathing.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,
knc52

I have one of Dan's intakes (probably the ones you found on ebay - seller danscustomparts), and am VERY happy with it.

That intake with a Jardine & some rejetting, totally transforms the Blast.
