experimenting with small spring rubber in rear shock with the blast trying to stiffen up a little.

fist gear to hi? well i guess i could see that in the training class.
I think first gear is too low. I have to shift in the middle of a inter section when leaving a stop sign/ light.

The Blast should go to 32mph in first gear. Just how fast are you going and whats the speed limit?

Gussie-is this what you mean? You can use rubber, plastic (PVC pipe), aluminum or steel. The spring is a bear to compress (but there are some tricks). If you are just using rubber between the springs, that can actually have an opposite effect. See that thread for more discussion on suspension mods.

I would like to know exactly when to shift, what mph for each gear. I do most of my riding under 60. so i would like to know exactly how far I should stretch the higher gears. I usually go 1st 30mph, 2nd 45 mph and third I ride at 50-55 I don't know where the limiter starts in third.

wow, I guess I've been babying my blast or my shifting is just way off. According to the user manual I think it says 1-15mph 2- 25mph 3-35mph 4-45pmh and then shift to 5th and this is how I've been doing it. I did realize before reading my manual that the shifting AND downshifting was not the same as my previous bike (Ninja 250)

so I could go up to 30 mph in 1st gear???!! I'd like to know how other people are shifting now...LOL

I take it all the way to 34 - lol - then shift to second and take it to 45 for second, and 55 to 60 is when I shift out of 3rd and into 4th - I don't even think of 5th till after 60 to 65mph - lol

Thanks EZ. Kscanuck785, Those speeds are only for break in. You don't want to shift at that low of speeds because your lugging your engine. which is very bad for your engine's internals.

I've been doing about the same as Kscanuck785. 1st-1-20mph,2nd-20-35,3rd-35ish to 40-45ish,4th-45ish to 50-55 and then 5th. If I wait to shift any higher, especially in the lower gears, it feels like its going to blow or something. Are those speeds for every blast weather or not its stock? Maybe thats just me being new so if no rain tomorrow I'll try shifting like you guys recommend.

In several of the MSF exercises the students have to shift up to second at about 10 to 12 mph. In another they shift between 2nd and 3rd at about 15 to 18 mph. The Blast just didn't do this as well as the other bikes. The "bucking" un-nerved some of the more timid riders. On the up side the Blasts were more resistant to stalling to it was a good choice for folks with clutch control issues.

Yes, thats for stock Blasts. Try shifting to 2nd at 40mph/7500rpm (stock redline is 6500 rpm), thats got a whole different sound to it!LOL!

aleuthian, you beat me to posting...LOL... I was going to ask if that was good for the stock blast or only the ones that have been "improved" : )
I am also thinking if I wait to 30 mph to shift in second something might blow or I might just fall off the bike due to the intense vibrations..LOL!

I am also planning on testing shifting gears a later see how it goes : )

huuummmm....without a tach, rather hard to tell where the red line is and when we've reach that magic RPM : )
I've been shifting with the "sound" and it seemed like my shifting was ok but apparently not...LOL

Yes I have this weekend off. Actually I didn't schedule myself this weekend. We have a huge car show in town at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. MSRA back to the fifties. It's a great show, I love all the old street rods. G's dad has 59 chev Belair 4 door fixed up like a police car he brings down to the show. His family comes in from around the country too so they have sort of a family reunion.

I just try to shift before the ignition cut out activates.

Erik, It seems that the hard economic times have hit motorcycle training. I signed up to teach almost every weekend this summer. So far 3 of my classes have been canceled due to lack of enrollment. We have never had to cancel classes before.

I live in the state with the second worst unemployment but motorcycle training classes are harder to get into than ever. In order to get my wife signed up for a class in August I had to call as soon as registration was open for the summer. If I had waited until the next day all classes for the summer would have been full.
They are actually blaming the weak economy for the high number of new people seeking their endorsements. Cheap insurance rates and good gas mileage.
I think I am eating through tires faster than I can make it up through gasoline savings though LOL.

I have been trying to convince the wife to by a Blast instead of a Ninja without much success. Those things are ugly and I don't want one in my garage.

Tortoise-just say no! I would think if she sat on the two
bikes that there would be an obvious choice.

Swampy-I think 4th only goes to 80mph. Mine hits redline at about 90mph and thats 1000 rpm over stock.

As far as shifting-you cant over rev a Blast. When the bike starts to sputter, you've hit redline. You wont do any damage hitting the rev limiter (well, if you hold it there for an extended period of time, maybe) and I would suggest finding out where it is. That will give you a better idea of how far you can go rpmwise if you need more power. And if you're not hitting redline on a regular basis, it isnt time to 'move up' yet for more power.

rode to work this morning, just pulled up in the parking lot a few minutes ago, beautiful morning to ride BTW : )
I shifted later like you guys said and well it works just as well if not better...LOL
I guess the vibrations at lower RPMs were really throwing me off as when to shift but now I know better !

oh and for the guy whos wife wants to get the Ninja, tell her I sold mine to get the Blast and it is a MUCH MUCH MUCH better bike for so many reasons, not as "nervous" as the Ninja and I found the Buell to be better balanced(the Ninja always felt kinda top/front heavy to me) and a lot easier to move around.I've never looked back, I haven't miss the Ninja for a second even, so glad I did the trade. I LOVE my Blast!
If nothing else, the Blast sounds AND looks WAY better!

That's cool Kscanuck785, you will grow to like the sounds of the higher RPMs. This is a hard bike to shift by sound especially with an aftermarket exhaust. The Ninja will sound alot different since it's a twin, the blast only has one cylinder(you know that of course) so It needs higher RPMs to shift properly and in effect will be much louder.

Gear: Thanks for linc about shock shims; Didn't you ounce string about quieting down the Vance & Hines a little. I love what the jetting and V&H do for the bike, but it could be a little quieter! Like 785 says. I'm in a quieter hood and I have earplugs!

OMG! What a difference. Couldn't really ride today because of thunderstorms but I did get to take it out to try shifting at higher RPMs. MUCH BETTER! My Blast has a lot more get up and go than I thought. The more I learn about this bike the more I love it!
