Ok some of you may have already heard the story about the busted crank shaft in my blast..but if you haven't last fall i bought my first bike, the amazing buell blast, but the day after i bought it, BEFORE i had a chance to register it, the engine was totaled. i resently bought a new motor from a parts shop in ohio they sent the motor i got it and everything looks great. i didn't however receave a title for the new motor. and the vin # is on the engine so when i go in to register i was woundering how this is going to work because ill have the title for the dead motor but no title for the handlebars, wheels, gastank, and new motor combination...hope ez has an answer for me.

Typically they use the VIN that is on the forks. In Indiana, I had to have a sherriff come by and inspect the vehicle. I don't think you should have any issues, tons of vehicles have rebuilt or replaced motors in them.

thanks for the quick reply i didn't think it would be that big of a deal its just gonna be a strange story for the guys at the dmv. and my dad knows nothing so he didn't know what to tell me.

I had a friend with a 92 FXR. He bought a new engine from HD with the matching serial number. He was hit on the highway at 70 mph and the bike was totalled. The insurance company only wanted to give him $2500, because it was a 92 with 30-50 thousand miles on it. The new motor didn't work into the equation as the numbers matched and it was "Just an FXR"(Very nicely Bobbed) After a couple of weeks of fighting he got them up to $7500. So the I told you that to say as long as you have a bill of sale for the engine you should be good to go.

Typically they use the frame VIN. Now if you were riding a Harley with suspicions aroused and acting like a jackass, then the different VIN numbers could come into play. As long as the VIN number on the new engine isnt off a stolen bike, you shouldnt have any problem.
As Swampy said keep the bill of sale with your paperwork.
If you suspect the DMV will check and question, bring the old engine with you.Important : Keep your mouth shut. Dont offer any information unless you are asked
I've been riding with non matching VIN's for a few years now. I dont expect a problem.

OK thanks for the quality information guys. I'll be sure to keep track of the bill o sale. But I'll not sure what I'm gonna do with the old motor, most of it is still good, I think....

no i had just bought it and was shifting into fifth gear for the first time and the engine just stopped. i coasted to a stop and checked the gas it was good..so i took it to a guy i know who knows harleys and he pulled the primary cover off because you could see there was something that had like drilled most of the way through he cover. inside you could see it had just twisted off right where the crank comes out of the block, the mechanic said that it looked like only about 1/3 of the cranks thickness was holding it on, idk how to explain it well. but the part was manufactured poorly or something because it simply twisted in half.

Sounds like the crankshaft sproket nut came loose....

ok so now the private mechanic who said he could do it for me says he won't do me any justice, he doesn't think he can put it back together easily. so now i need someone to do it and i don't want to take it to a dealer. so any of you guys know someone who could use some cash and could do a good job, close to lake geneva wisconsin.

Ir the crank nut has come loose, and the crankshaft spline is worn away, you can, as in I have just tightned everything up and MIG welded the crankshaft nut to the crank and the nut to the crank sprocket, it is a permenant fix onethat would require an abrasive wheel to remove, but it is cheap and works. The alternative is to replace/rebuild the crank or simply replace the engine. You could part out the bike and buy a new one.

ya the old motor wasn't worth fixing $1400 parts and labor so i just bought a new motor but im not knowledgeable to put it back in, and the mechanic i thought was going to put it in for me decided that he didn't know enough about the blast to it all back together.

ps when we pulled the old motor out we had to pull off the rear wheel and left side peg part of the frame and the fuel tank. the fact that all these pieces were going to need to be reattached spoked him i think. so now i need to find someone to help me get it back together right, and the dealers will charge me like crazy so i dont want to go there.

I have switched out motors on the Blast and had it running in about 4 hours, so if you take a couple of days just about anybody can do it.
Post up on the main Quick board, there are plenty of Buellers around you who could do it.
If I was not temporarily "Homeless" I would invite you over for the weekend and I would do it.
