The stock exhaust was targeted to do certain things - sometimes at the expense of other things we would have liked more - aka power - so obviously we substitute for our favored style - the pursuit of the extra pony - lol

If your doing the cams, you might as well do the kit - right now it basically costs what a good set of rings and a good hi comp piston would cost, yet be a total upgrade even from those parts - the new Nicsil process being declared very durable - indeed, and now replatable - its that thickly done in the first place. Since you'll be practically there - lol - so the darkside wispers - beleve me - I know this to be true, and really makes it worth it.

Some folks here need to cease the personal attacks. That kind of juvenile behavior is neither appreciated nor tolerated here.

Blake, no disrespect towards you or your excellent site here, but, people are getting fed up with Buellistics' condescending attitude. If you read most of his posts here in The Thumper Forum, you will see how he acts. People are getting frustrated and are airing their opinions, not exactly personal attacks, merely various posters trying to help him act more civilized.

*edit:
If you look back a few months ago, the custodians of The Thumper Forum asked him to tone down his attitude. But he decided against their advice and still acts in the same manner.

I was looking into a big bore kit, and only found 2 on the web, Rev and HRHS. Anyone know of a reason why one is better than the other, or are they about the same?

Revolution Performance is a Badweb sponsor and is owned by the originator (Brian Nallin) of NRHS (which I think you meant and is no longer a sponsor). About the same (but its open for discussion)!
Revolution Performance will probably also give you a Badweb discount.

LOL - that Twin website got deleted due to the owner of said website being a jerk and not really factual with facts. Don't worry Jeff - you didn't know their history - I do.

Many MFGRs now use the plating system that Revolution uses without any problems. The early cylinders had true line bore problems because they used to bore out the base cylinders the old fashioned way, and so some small percentage of cylinders where not true bored. That is a thing of the past and Revolution is now very modernly equipped and the plating process is almost 3 times as thick as the original - thick enough that they can even re-plate if needed - something they could not do before. Aaron can be a great guy - as long as you don't disagree with him. My 515 kit with the Millinium/revolution Cylinder was from him - one of those fore-mentioned early cylinders (and I have over 25000 miles on it now), when he and Brian where partners - he had no problem with them then and learned all he could from Brian about pulling power out of a head - lol - of course as soon as they fell out as partners - he of course started finding issues with their products - of course he was only watching out for us - lol

Several of our sponsors sell such kits - Some with Revolution cylinders, some with Axtell - check out their sites and you'll see.

Thanks for the info. How much of a dif in HP do you get going with the 600cc kit insted of the 515? I dont plan on changin out the carb, dont want to do any adj on the lifters or rods so max HP will be on the low side any way. I guess the big HP gain from the 515 kit is the 10.5 compression?

A couple 3 hp from the comp., however, the hi comp also sets you up for more aggressive cams, if you upgrade the seals, guides, and add better springs to the head - lol - its the first step of the start of walking in the dark side! - lol

Since the 515 and 600 cost the same, I'd get the 600. Unfortunately though you'll need to do a complete engine teardown for the 600. Which adds to the price.

I never thought about doing the 515 because of the marginal increase in displacement and it was cheaper to just buy the high comp piston (and I've been told you can bore the stock cylinder out for the 515 piston anyway, its .063 overbore). I just used a .015 overbore on the streetBlast.
I did end up doing the 515 on the raceBlast because it was the fastest way to get it back together by raceday and since I was buying a cylinder anyway, I got the 515 for the same price!

cost was not the issue, the kit only costs a little more than a new exhaust system. Its the down time that would kill me. 1 week to pull the thing apart, 1 week to shipp it, 1week for machine work, 1week to get it back and probably a month to get it back together. i would rather spend the time rideing. But 1 week to install a 515 may not be too bad.

I put B50 cams in my engine, and felt a significant difference. Mileage went down to 51 mpg, but I've only gone through one tank. If I can get higher compression, I can get better mileage. My wife gives me a hard time for caring about mileage, since my Jeep averages 16 mpg.

So I sent email to Revolution Performance, saying I didn't want to go full bore on an upgrade. I was hoping to get the valves upgraded to larger valves, something like XB's valves, and just rebore the cylinder and get a matching piston and 12:1 compression.

He came back with "you get the best performance with the 600cc kit and head work for about $800." Great. That's what I want, but I may not have the budget. So, the day will come, soon, I hope, that my wife will say, "Do it, and you have $***." I'll just give them a call at that point. The cylinder upgrade is the way I really want to go because they plate it for durability and seal. Sure beats boring the cylinder.

12:1 is a little high for pump gas and too much unless your using radical cams. Every time I've talked to NRHS or Revolution Performance they tell me getting above say 10.5:1 ruins the combustion chamber/piston fit and causes problems with 'knock and ping' (simplified version). That may differ using maybe an XB head or custom head design or if they set it up.
I do know 10.5:1 gets a little sensitive to octane deficiency.

Thats just what I've been told. If you get 12:1 to work, I'm all for it!

Thanks for telling me! I'll definitely ask them about that. If it is just knock and ping, I can adjust for that. Higher compression gives higher efficiency. Going back to my research ...

I've seen 12:1 pistons for Sportsters listed, more often its 10.5:1

It's more than just 'knock & ping', those are the symptoms. It turns the combustion chamber on the inefficient side with bad 'squish' zones and other such problems. Revolution Performance can explain it much better or they can tell you what mods will be needed for 12:1.

LOL - if they check as often as I do - I'd bet they know that, but thank you for the clarification - its a great deal and a great step forward in the thumper quest for power. Such a sale should be posted on the site - NHRS Performance's - so Blastards can get their Dark side on! God knows they check your site as often as they check the others listed here, and we well know that these are great sponsors here as well; its just if there is a great sale on a popular item by another vendor - it should be told! Just like the on going search for tires - lol -

I am not allowed to link to my site as i am not a sponsor here. But most folks should be able to find NRHS if they do a very quick search.

Lets see if Revolution Performance can match that price? Last I looked their 515 kits were $375

(Message edited by buelliedan on May 05, 2008)

And your equivalent version kit with plated cylinders is $675 and fails to provide a lifetime warranty as does Revolution Performance.
