No, not cams just yet. We were discussing high lift/rpm valve springs for stock Blast heads and 515 kits. I havent exactly made up my mind what I'm going to do with both Blasts.

"what I'm going to do with both Blasts" I meant performancewise. They arent going anywhere. I just got bored riding a stock Blast again, so some changes are coming for both (though they'll be budget oriented).
I just havent had the time or money to do much to either bike, but I have been stockpiling parts with mods in mind!

PS James is still racing and getting faster every month!

gearheaderiko- you are lucky to have gotten fork parts. I took mine in 17 days ago for fork seals, and they just got them. apparently there is a warehouse that has the blast parts stocked as they are not ordered often enough for dealers. needless to say I am not very happy with my local shop, and they have the sack to ask me why I don't get any of my service done. be thankful you have a guy who can get you what you need. It seems to be a toss up, free warranty repairs=no bike 2-3 weeks
quick repairs= $$ out of pocket

Frickin nightmare

You kind of wonder how can they expect to sell you a more expensive bike when you get that kind of service. Would have been nice of them to say "Yeah, it needs fork seals. We'll call you when they come in, then bring your bike back and we'll do it".
At least its the middle of winter, more or less (I see you live in AZ).

the weather hasn't been exactly, "friendly", nasty little storms popping up. I actually went to my local dealer to try to trade up. They basically laughed and said tough, pony up some more $$ and we'll think about a deal that's only in our favor. Oh well, I chalk it up to being new to the game. But I want to thank everyone on BWB for their help and getting parts for mods. I really do appreciate it.

My dealer told me to call in advance and they'd get what I needed and then bring the bike in. There aren't many P3s in this area. As for trade in, you may was well hang onto it if it's running good. I plan on upgrading in a few years but I'll keep Thumper. It's too damn much fun.

Hey Everyone:

I've been scoping out the Blast for a while and am almost sold on them, but have a few questions. I've looked at epinions.com reviews and was wondering how trustworthy the transmission is on these bikes? Such as clunky clutch, etc? If I got one I would want to make a few performance changes, and saw D & D exhaust, and was wondering if I would have to rejet the Blast? What other cheap mods could I get that would make a difference? For example, I saw on ebay if you type in Buell Blast that a torque stuffer for exhaust is advertised, is this even something to consider?
Lastly, I am looking for a bike between 2000 to 2003 mainly due to cost, which one would be the best choice?

thanks,

jwirtz

Skip the torque cone - Welcome - yes you need to rejet - 45/175 - the are twin tranny's so they are very reliable - get a 2003 or up to avoid any hassles down the line - the tranny smooths out with usage and time and a good synth oil such as Mobil 1.

Jwirtz333-I actually have the torque cone, not much of a change, if any. I own an 06, but this is what I hve done to mine. A new pipe & can, a Re-jet, and I made my own rearsets. I have about $500 in extras. I have a great time on my bike. I'm still somewhat new here to the BWB, but these guys can really give you some good info.

EZBlast:

I rebuilt motorcycles before, but always find a little hesitation in messing with the carbs, just b/c it doesn't take much to mess something up. I was wondering how easy it would be to rejet. Is it just a screw replacement (45/175), and what would the parts cost?

thanks,

45 primary jet - about 5 bucks, 175 main the same price, see the carb section in the Thumper KV for pt. #s - you also have to drill out the sauder plug covering the air screw - start out at 2 3/4 turns and if you still have any decell popping take it to 3 turns out from light bottoming in. Its explained in step by step details with a few other tips as well in that carb section.

Just one more question: (at least for now)

Can you purchase an aftermarket exhaust that you won't have to rejet the carbs? If so, what's the best bang for the buck?

No - however, best bang for the buck is the Jardine - See the TKV exhaust section for proper mounting which is contrary to their instructions.

Welcome Justin!
Rejetting is not hard at all, along with drilling out the plug for the idle screw. Just patience and good quality screwdrivers is all thats needed.
Some exhausts dont recommend you re-jet (though we do) and if you live in higher altitudes you may be fine with stock jetting or even have to go leaner (we generally richen them up).

If you get an older Blast there is a good chance the exhaust will be done, but I would try and find a bike that is completely stock. A bike is only as reliable as the last person who worked on it. Stock=factory. Modified = ?

Buy your bike first before you buy accessories. Some things, such as the torque cone, are pretty much 'snake oil' if used in the wrong situation. We'll help you stay clear of bad mods or overpriced parts.
E-Bay is a great place for bargains but I've seen stock Blast parts sell for 2-3 times the cost of new.
(The ebay advertised torque cone is usually $30. You can buy 2 for a twin cylinder bike for $30!)

Just my 2 cents!

Welcome to the Badweb Jwitrz333!

You need to rejet the carb wether you put a performance exhaust on it or not, the Blast runs just so much better when its running a little rich. Also the trans takes a while to get broken in, so a used bike is just that much better!

The only other thing you will need to do is drive it, replace the tires and get rid of the stock handle bars!

ALSO.....P3newbie, have you posted pictures of your rearsets yet? If not you better get them up or bad MOJO will be upon you!

After 19 days in purgatory(aka the dealer), I finally have my ride back. It took them 19 days, I made 2 phone calls and could have had my fork parts in 3 days. Can anyone say no priority at the dealer. Anyway, now that I have it back, I will be posting some pics. I had the low seat, now has the high seat (thanks nick), major improvement, and the shifter parts work great (thanks dean).

The MOJO pixie is henceforth staved off.

I predict a 720cc twin replacing the 900cc and the Blast - with a cam aimed for torque in the dirt - If they get rid of the 900's - which they are phasing out and get rid of the Blast - sooner or later that leaves them open for a niche do it all entry level - would not a lite 720cc twin be in their future - as their starter/supermoto/dirt - a smaller twin was implied - a great combo for larger twin testing, and developing new and unique stuff for the bike's missions as well. Could I be wrong? Hmm - the 883 destroked - 720 - with Buell parts and new unique/test parts that could latter pass over to the bigger twin Buells - lol - In true dualsport/supermotto - fashion - could I be far off - Buell's going to get dirtier!

Jwitrz333.... I'm a new Blast owner myself (2005 model) and the bike is awesome. Don't hesitate to buy one, these bikes rock!! Also, the folks on this site are the most helpful bunch of people I've come across. If only the dealers and service departments were as helpful as the members of the Badweb.

I believe a 720 twin would be too big for the MSF/Riders Edge requirements. Unless H-D plans to get ride of R-E or use other bikes in the program, they can't go much larger than 500 cc, unless something's changed in the MSF rules. It's an interesting quandry. Personally, I'd dig a bigger engined-Blast or the 720.

Yes, however, When Erik was asked if it would be a Blast derivative, he said think a little bigger - so either a bigger Blast engine or a smaller twin - I bet a smaller twin - they have the ability now to make it lighter as well, with the single perhaps being adopted by HD?

My dreaming:

A 500 in the XB platform, or a 720, yes I like.

A 500 twin(Not so out of the picture, look at the...whats that big thing again?VSCR or what ever it is, totally new engine design)
Benefits smoother, lower power and torque band, lower insurance because its below 500, and it would still fit in the RE program.
If anybody is listening, I really don't need the off road capabilities, I already can ride a Blast on dirt roads already, I am resigned to riding alone, the wife is out(bikes only).
I want an XB Blast. I love simplicity, and economy, until the Kids are on their own I can't afford shite. I would get an 03 XB9S but my insurance would take a jump due to the "Superbike" status of the thing.(It really is a Super bike though!)

I'm done now+

I can't wait for the pretty snow to stop falling and it get to 50 degrees, maybe in 90 days or so. Its like I am in prison for 5-6 months at a time, I gotta find a job down south.

Just a guess but, BMW is doing well with their F650 single as is the KLR 650 and the V-Strom 650 twin. An American made Blast version of a F650-KLR On/Off road would be a strong seller I would think.

A 650cc XB9 ? That bike would open the HD doors to a different group of riders. Could HD dealers accept it? Eric should insist on a separate boutique within the dealership, much as the car companies do is in order.

"Eric should insist on a separate boutique within the dealership"They already do-its called a 'rack'. And if your lucky it will even have a t-shirt, a jacket and hat on it!!!

Seriously though, having been to a number of Buell dealers in the last year, many of the newer dealers (aka remodeled) do have a section totally committed to Buells with a nice display of bikes and a fully stocked rack. Still less than 50% of the dealers I visited actually having this, some dealers having no stock at all.
Lets hope your 'boutique' idea is spreading.
