I'm saying 92hp at the crank for a 984cc v-twin is not world class. Don't get me wrong, that's plenty enough for my riding abilities and the conditions I ride in. The motor has been bulletproof for me and really have no complaints. BUT, for some the other people on this board it's not enough. When an RC51, Aprilia Tuono or Mille, Ducati 999, and now a future KTM can make 125hp or more at the crank with similar displacement...how can you compare? Is it too much to ask to get something similar in output in the bike we love so dearly?

PS. My buddies Aprilia RSV-R with an after market pipe does not sound like angry bumblebees. I wish my bike sounded that good!

I watched that video and the first thought that came to my mind was: This is how Buell would market their bikes if they didn't have to deal with so many LAWYERS at the mothership.....

I saw one in the flesh last sunday.All we need to do is sack the guy with the orange spray can,take away the sharp edged styling,tidy the bike up mechanically,put a belt drive on it.Then maybe consider it.

I think there will come a day when Buell will produce a "world-class" bike with a "world-class" engine.

Of course, "world-class" means different things to different people. Some people consider the existing engine "world-class" and enjoy it for what it is (unstressed, low-maintenance, good torque); others do not and look for a more race-inspired engine (usually water-cooled, DOHC, >100 rwhp). Either way suits me just fine. Until Buell gets there, I'll be happy with my XB9R.

I disagree with the assertion that a "world-class" engine must be race-inspired; but then again, people who clamor for it will probably get us that race-inspired engine sooner!

Rocketman: You compare the fit and finish of your 10-year old S1W to your 10-year old 916. How does the fit and finish of the newer XBs compare to that 916?

The big part of the problem with KTM introducing their new streetbike/sportbike models is that they have a very limited production and manufacturing space due to all the different offroad models they make. Not the time it takes to develope a bike.

This has stalled several of their new models because assembly scedule for their existing models is booked solid.

They have been in the process of building new manufacturing plant as well as production/assembly plant and unfortunately until this is atleast partially completed (in 2005)we won`t see any Superduke`s or RC8`s in big numbers.

The design work for these models has been completed for over a year with about 50 bikes produced already and KTM`s president said in an interview if they can squeeze production time in they will make as many as they can in 2005 (300+ Superdukes and atleast 50 RC8`s.

KTM also has a V5 motor (also developed and completed) that they were planning to use for running a moto GP team, but the team was scraped last year so they could spend the money on their new factory.

Kenny Roberts was so impressed with the motor that Proton will be using it in Moto Gp in 2005

Whilst you might 'own' a Buell internet forum where you can kick arse as and when you please, remember you're only here because WE are.

And whilst we're on the subject of KTM, you disgust me in how you underestimate the Austrian's as major players in the motorcycle market. Steyr Daimler Puch, a fine Austrian company steeped in automotive history, have been making wheeled machines since before your granddaddy was in short trousers. In fact longer than Harley freekin Davidson too. Puch had their first motorised bicycle, the Type A, in production in 1903.

What else can I educate you with besides good manners?

First go get your camera and let me know when you are ready, then I'll tell ya.

I like KTM and respect them plenty. Would never underestimate the 4+ repeat winners of Dakar.

Did that 1902 Puch have upside down forks?

Where/why are you going off on the rant about KTM? : ? I sure didn't mean to give anyone the impression that I was "underestimating" KTM.

Don't you recall debating with me long ago about how long it would take Buell to design and produce a superbike class street bike?

Those brain cells long gone eh?

Anyway, I'll answer your question again Blake, seeing as you remain unsatisfied.

I also said a couple of years ago that the XB9R was about Buell not willing to take a chance by launching the XB in 1200 form. Nor did they launch the 9R in faired form with dropped bars first without good reason. That's a clever little ploy to hide the lack of power, by not sitting the rider up in the wind, as in Buells traditional style of the day. Call those early XB9R buyers Buell guinea pigs if you will.

Now the XB9R is tried and tested, we finally get the 1200 version, but that's created a problem back at the Buell depot. What are they going to do with all those left over 9 motors? I mean, who wants a 9 when you can have a 12? Simple, we'll give the XB a see through bikini fairing and air box, stick on some motocross bars and hand guards, shove in those 9 engines we can't get rid of, and call it a city bike. Great marketing ploy to get shut of all those unwanted 9 engines cluttering up the place eh.

Sorry, what was it you said KTM hadn't done?

I had an experience like that in Wisconsin a few years ago, were I had the good fortune to meet a few of the guys here. It's just nice to know a name. You know mine.

Just seams like common courtesy.

It is also a requirement that one list their full name in registering for the board. I can understand leaving off the last name for privacy reasons.

I have no problem with the XB9's nor their lack of whatever it is they don't have for me.

Personally I thought them a rather ugly duckling, especially next to the greatest of motorcycles ever built, which Buell had managed with their S1's.

How much nicer those XBS's look too.


Blake, in the true spirit of staying on topic, I was prepared to engage in a debate regarding the KTM issues you've once again brought to light. I won't fall out with you over a few insulting words, but I might say stuff about Buell you won't find liking to your taste. Of course, they're only opinions, mine, and I can have positive ones for Buell too, but isn't that in keeping with lively debate? Your personal insults though, distracted me, just like you knew they would.

When riding I'm always called spud or spudman. When working it's ... Dave Johnson. The spudman moniker was handed to me while at Texas Instruments in Midland (armpit of texas). It was my logon name to the brand new world wide web at the time and was reflective of some youthful indiscretions. There were 7 other Dave Johnsons working at TI then, yea it sucks. If/when we ever meet, just call me spud.

Yea the M2 (best bike ever made) gets a lot of attention anywhere I stop, red lights, parking lots, gas stations, even honks/thumbs-up on the freeways. Most common question asked, "Is that a new model?". Almost all are surprised when I tell them it's a 99. This Buell has introduced me to some of the greatest people I have ever met. No other motorcycle has had such a profound impact on my life, including grandpa's honda ct90 that got me started.

Rocketman is a big boy and can toss his own bricks, just didn't like the way you were treating him. Back to lurk mode for now.
