Deep breath...please. Home defense weapon choices vary by local laws. In NY a permit is required to have a hand gun, and you may have a "target" permit or "concealed" permit. Pissant prosecutors will nail you for defending your home with a "target" permit, since you are not "target shooting" ( New York is screwed up ) So paste a bullseye on the perp. ( joke ) Shotguns are the subject of many many myths. The shot spread is very small at close ranges, and if the bad guy is 35 feet away, why are you shooting? Seriously. http://www.theboxotruth.com/index.htm Rifles Can be a good choice, but you need to be very proficient to consider one for home defense. In hand guns, despite the near century domination of the 1911, I say revolver, or a semiauto with revolver-like action. Glock, etc. Simple, reliable, with no extra buttons to push or levers to flick. To use one ( any weapon! )without at least some training & without practice? Damn foolish. You are more likely have your whole family murdered by your own gun than to save it. Get a baseball bat. That's my opinion, I'm sure I'm partially wrong. My choice, for ME is a .357 revolver, ( Taurus/Ruger/Smith ) or a Para-ord LDA .45 in a "commander" size. ( revolvers... for carry, a Taurus Ti/Smith alloy - for locked bedside drawer use, a Ruger GP101. ) |

so bads1 bar owner, I guess nobody does knows all you know. Actually a bouncer DOES NOT have to be liscensed to remove a person from an establishment in wisconsin. At least in milwaukee, or Madison. I do know this and i don't own a bar. Don't know about Racine, maybe they some some screwball law allowing a patron to destroy your bar or harm your patrons until LEO's arrive. Madison has a lot of college kids who power drink and I've seen them get tossed. Milwaukee i've been physically tossed from a couple places. Inside you can do with in reason what is necessary to eject a patron, outside is another story |

Tom b,I have a friend that runs two Water Street Bars. They have had suit problems. I have a family friend and also bar owner got sued to the tune of 65 grand because of a bouncer. That bouncer also got sued for his actions and also jail time for no real length but did. The patron also served jail time... more lengthly and hell he was making money sitting doing time and he was greater at fault. Bouncers in most cases can make things worse. They create animosity in lots of ways in my area anyways and I also experienced it in Monterey last year as I was observing. There is a fine line on what a bouncer can do. You might be very surprised as to what a patron can do legally even though he might be at fault. As far as laws?? We in Wisconsin as taverns, pubs, night clubs all belong to the Tavern league of Wisconsin. Kinda like the AMA. It fights for our rights as bar operators but we also have to know the laws. Alot of this is easier to explain when speaking in person rather trying to type it and make you understand. Tramp, Calling you a joke offends you that much. You have got to be thicker skined then that for crumbs sake. BTW though if I felt the need that I needed to call you a joke to your face I would. I'm not one to hide in back of a key board. What would you do if I did or someone did anyways??? Its a couple harmless words. We get that crap all the time in the bar business. |

Local law chased a rabid skunk all over a 7 block area, trying to get a clear shot with a Mossberg 500(a gun I sold them). Cop afoot and a "citizen" driving the cop car in chase. Sheriff deputy shows up about mid scene with shotgun in hand. Skunk came around the corner of a house and rookie local cop unloaded the Mossberg on it at less than 20 feet.....whilst back steeping away. NEVER FREAKING TOUCHED the skunk with a single pellet! He's afraid of skunks. Skunk crossed the street and "citizen" floors the cop car and runs over it...thump thump. Skunk kept going, but a little slower and cop car now stinks....... bad. Sheriff pops the skunk across the street from my house in the city park. I show up(known local gunman)."Oh sure, now you show up after it's all over" (LOL). Rookie......... academy training...........makes you go Hmmm. Good thing the skunk wasn't armed and shooting back at the rookie. On the other hand, I had a skunk in my front yard last fall. Didn't seem to care whether I was there or not. One 20 yard shot with an antique Quackenbush loaded with a 22 short.......and it was all over. Course the skunk gave out "a dying wish", straight up laying on his back. I was down wind and couldn't hardly retreat fast enuf. Strong stuff, fresh out of the holding tank............ |

Laws very greatly from state to state.I have carried not leagle for over 30 years.Have worked as a bouncer for a while. Have pulled 3 times in 32years shot 1. I was 13 and made lung shot while my fathers motel was being robbed. Another time when 18 a drunk threated to kick his a$$. and a 38 in his ear being cocked calmed him down. Cop next door allso showed up and thanked me. one other time a guy jumped a friend and after he kicked his butt about 10 of his friends started to take up for him and I sat in the truck with 2 pistols in my hands, didnt point them but they backed off. that was 30 years ago still carry some but avoid trouble at all cost. Still would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6. just my opinion but works by me |

So anyway... I'm with Tramp on this one. Scatter-guns for home defense. I prefer the semi-automatic variety myself. Here in AZ a bouncer can throw you out of a bar. They do have to ask you to leave first. Once you don't, you've given them every right that a person has in throwing someone out of their home. As I understand it anyhow. Don't know about Wisconsin but every bar I've been to up there was pretty cool. |

Given the choice I also would choose a shotgun (Remington 1187 special purpose with ghost ring sights and mag extension) before a handgun inside my home. However the original question was about handgun recommendations so I left that out. Another good choice is an M1 carbine or one of the pistol caliber carbines since a novice will have an easier time hitting with it and recoil is gentle meaning the novice will practice more with it than they would with a lightweight handgun. |

I have both a handgun and Shotgun handy. Colt .45 Night Officer II-Full Frame and Handle with compact Slide and Barrel..Shotgun is a Mossberg 500. I'd prefer to use the shotgun with neighbors so close by, but the handgun is closer. I prefer the Colt due to its larger round and slower velocity, less likely to fly through the perp and walls. Not saying it wont just not a likely say a 9mm. .40 cal will work nicely also. You'll like that Mossberg, its cheap and shoots very well and takes alot of punishmen. One of the really beautiful features of the .45 , esp. for home 'deef', is it's superior stopping power. If you keep an '11 under the bed, etc., the dust bunnies will have little detrimental effect on it's slide, too. |

Chuck moved to Aussie so they banned guns (no need to have them) We can also ban them once he returns to protect us. I hear Obama is a good friend because Mr. Norris told him he only uses guns for hunting. Chuck has agreed to return once Obama is elected. (Message edited by hdbobwithabuell on May 27, 2008) |
