Stopping power is about placement not caliber. A 9mm center of mass (or center of forehead) will do more than a .45 in the leg. I just bought a .40 H&K USP Compact. Love it! I am waiting for the H&K P30 to come out in .40. The XD is good as well as the M&P. Not a glock fan, but they are able weapons as well. Of course if money is no object, Kimber is the best you can get (IMHO). Well crafted nail drivers they are. | ||

The Glock is by far the simplest to use and take down with safety on trigger there is no extra button- leaver to confuse you if you are in a hurry to use it. it is safe untill you put finger in trigger. | ||

Cowboy, Never said they are bad guns. I'm just not a fan. I like exposed hammers, separate safeties, and decocker function. I also didn't like the angle of the grip of most of the Glocks I have tried. Ain't a bad gun. Obviously you are a fan. I believe that there are better poly frame guns. I like the XD, M&P, P30, and PX4 better than the Glock. They are all newer designs and incorporate better, newer features than the Glock which is a little longer in the tooth. Each of these weapons has built upon what Glock started. Glock simply hasn't done anything to progress since then. They don't have to. People will buy their weapons simply because they are a Glock. | ||

Get a gun you can shoot comfortably and consistently. If you can, try to shoot a few different makes and calibers. Even if the gun is only for home security you need to take it to the range and put enough rounds through it that you're able to hit accurately and handle the weapon comfortably. That way if, God forbid, you do have to use it in an emergency you'll be more capable. If you're a 1911 .45 fan check out the new Taurus PT 1911. My friend, who is a gun nut, was raving about them. Because they use lower quality metals if the industry as a whole is any indication. You really should shoot a few before you decide. Try Glock, HK, Kimber, Springfield XD, A revolver... Just try a few. The main factors in choosing a pistol are the angle of the grip and the size of the grip. The ammo cost is another factor because you NEED to put about 500 rounds through it in the first month or so, then at least 50 every couple months after that to maintain any semblance of proficiency. I've recently purchased a Kimber (their "cheap" "Custom II" model) and it's a VERY fine pistol. The trigger is the best I've used since a Colt Python revolver. Glocks have sandpaper in the trigger somewhere I think. They function for sure (although I have looked at a LOT of broken ones used by law enforcement) but I just don't like them. Maybe for the same reason I like Buells. | ||

I was doubtful too because I've never equated Taurus with high quality but these are "custom shop" quality guns, forged components, match-grade barrels, solid guide rods, ect. BTW - I've got Springfield, S&W, Kahr, and Sig pistols/revolvers. All have their good and bad points if you consider all factors; recoil, concealability, general accuracy, "stopping power" (AKA caliber), capacity, etc. You may find yourself owning several in a short time frame  | ||

250.00 is a lot for a mossberg pump. also, for home defense, the mossberg is more than enough, big boom, huge, long streak of flame in the dark, no need to aim well....handguns are for carry, scatterguns are for keeps. | ||

the subcompacts make little sense for home defense, they're strictly a carry item, and still bulkier than many small-frames despite their snubbiness. | ||

Not only is the cost a factor, but it takes a lot longer to become proficient with a handgun. A good short barreled shotgun with 00 buck is fairly foolproof, and practically anyone can pick one up and hit the target in a close quarters situation. It will also double as a club when you run out of ammo. I joke (half-seriously) that a samurai sword is also a pretty good home defense weapon. The only real advantage to a handgun is its concealability when you have to carry a weapon in public. Otherwise, long guns are where it's at. | ||

Fire all kinds of weapons and choose the one that fits you the best. It is a important decision to make so go out to a gun store that lets you try all kinds of pistols and shoot! Narrow your choices down and buy the one that your most comfortable operating. Opinions on guns are like oil everybody swears by a different brand. If you fire a few of them one will just fit, for me it is a Glock 30. | ||
