Cold this morning. I reached for the old X-wing. Started right up as it usually does. Looked down to see the engine case was wet with gas. saw the source was related to the fuel line leading to the filter. It stopped leaking before I could figure out where it came from! So I drove it to work and looked it over every so often. It's still not leaking. Anyone else experience a self-healing gas leak? | ||

Was it leaking out of the carb overflow line by chance? If so that would be something stuck in the float needle, which could possibly cure itself with a ride. | ||

Turn gas on before riding.... I always forget that last one. | ||

X1s are fuel injected, and do not have a fuel shut off valve. There's a rather large nut and rubber washer on the tank that the fuel outlet goes through. If it is a little loose, changes in temperature can cause it to leak just a bit. Give that nut a quarter turn. | ||

There is no such thing as a self fixing Buell. Investigate, locate, isolate and repair. Please don't just ride it. | ||

Time to replace the fuel lines. Micro-cracks might leak in the cold middle of the night and then expand enough to stop leaking in the sunlight. Your fuel pump is still solidly bolted to the tank? The filter itself has been changed? | ||

Yeah the fuel lines are original equipment and don't owe me a dime. They don't look cracked though. All that stuff need a good goin' through. 88,000 miles and all of that stuff under there is probably starting to get spooky. Hootowl's slightly loose tank washer theory sounds most likely in my mind. | ||

I was far from home when it happened. Walking out to your bike and finding it covered in gasoline (and parked in a pool of it) is not a pleasant experience. Fortunately, I was able to borrow a pipe wrench from a nearby business and stop the leak. | ||

I actually had the fuel petcock leak on my S1W. There are two screws, one each side of the lever. I tightened them up a bit and no leak. Also tighten the two screws that bolt the switch assembly to the bottom of the tank. | ||

I got all puckery just reading that Remind me to tell you about the time I filled Veronica up with gas. Not the gas tank....the engine. Then she spit it back in my eye. | ||

That is a dangerous thing to do. Glad you caught it while the motor was cold. A crankcase full of petrol can cause an explosion. | ||

I ran into the same issue with my Dad's (now my brother's) FXD. Was squirting gas and oil out the timing cover when we started it up after it had sat for about a year with the petcock never turned off... Flushed it several times with cheap oil (oxymoron, right?) and let it sit dry a few days (no oil) and the seals fortunately stopped leaking so we didn't have to do a full tear-down. I did replace and rebuild the carburetor and my brother always shuts the petcock off now  . (Message edited by phelan on November 11, 2014) | ||

Got noticeable noise from the rocker boxes, front is marked. any thoughts? I had an 81 82?? 750 suzuki that I salvaged, the vacuum petcock was left on reserve (on) and filled the motor with gas changed oil refilled gas made sure that the petcock was left on normal not reserve seemed fine gave the bike to my friends brother as his car had died and he needed transport. | ||
