Hey guys I'm brand new here. My names Don. From Sonoma County. Never owned or rode a buell before.
Owned Jap bikes and Bimmers. rode a few HDs. from full baggers to gixxer 1000 to klr650

I have to admit i was trying to buy a 99 s3 but like alot of craigslist someone else can be quicker than you.

I then looked at M2s but they're all over priced and modded to heck

Found 2 97 S1 bikes locally.

One is a basket case that burned up a back cylinder ( I have no idea how bad) but it comes with 30 degree pistons, late model thunderstorm heads and cylinders. clean cali title on NON OP. he wants $1000 and i really want it just to build this winter (haha bay area... winter??)
pics...

The second bike is running. It's kinda ratty but i like it :-D Seems to run fine. Has a chain conversion which I'm not very excited about (one of the main selling points for me is the low maintenance belt) and recently he fixed a sprocket output shaft o-ring? The bike is pretty oily after that sprocket. the muffler mount is busted. Engine didn't shake much at idle or low rpm. Couldn't ride it at the moment. No cash on me. He installed a dyna ignition with single fire screaming eagle coil and wires. that was the only thing he really fixed on it. he wants $2250

Pics..

I'd buy it. Those heads are either modded or XB or '04-up heads, because they don't have fins between the pushrods, whereas Tstorm heads do. The bike is definitely rough and may need more work than you think once you get into the motor, but you should be able to sell off the unwanted/unneeded parts to offset the initial buy a bit.

An ambitious project for someone new to Buells. If you've got XL motor experience, you're probably OK though.

Buy which one? The basket case? Which heads are you talking about Phelan?

Oh I see what you're talking about. Near the top of the head where the pushrods go in

The best setup is flat top pistons and XB heads, basically a Lightning motor and XB heads. I would keep looking, there is a garage queen out there waiting for you. Stay patient, there will be more bikes for sale when the season ends.

I got my 96S1 in early 97 with 7K miles, 104,000 miles now. :-)

If those heads are XB or '04-up XL1200 heads with 30* squish cut into them, they are a better setup than flattops and standard XB /'04-up XL1200 heads, because the squish increases exit velocity and power. Is there any logos on the loose cylinders? But yes I would jump on a $1000 basket case any day, as long as I felt most of the parts would clean up and are useable, like this case. Nobody likes to see a bike parted out, but everybody would jump on the parts if one decided it wasn't worth fixing. That also gives you the option to keep the parts you like and want and sell off the rest, which would basically net you free parts towards the next bike. In draft terms, it's a best available value mentality instead of a needs-based mentality.

Edit- I just realized I'm looking at two different bikes. I thought they were both the same bike with extra parts. Apparently I can't read (XD) so disregard what I said.

i may just wait it out..

if i can clean up my extra pickup i may be able to trade for a 99 buell m2

From your location and the story of the first bike, I think the first one has been discussed here at length...

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/740617.html

It sounds like a fair price if you seek an S1, and like to spin wrenches. If you were looking for an S3, though, an S1 is sort of the opposite.

I read through that thread. It's a orange frame bike and the one I was looking at is gray. But yes I get what your saying.

I know the S1 and s3 is a big gap but as soon as I saw that s1 with the clip ons I fell in love and honestly the seat doesn't feel half as bad as some crotch rockets.

my first choice would be a s3/t and second would be m2. I wouldn't mind a s2 and I found one in Reno that needs work. Here's the link.
http://reno.craigslist.org/mcy/4622647613.html

So guys I'm a ASE cert mechanic and bikes feel so easy to me so a project isn't a issue. But my ex gf hated bikes and I'm single now without a bike for 2 years.

Here's a pic of the s3 I really want. The chick who owns this dropped the price from 3750 to 2600 in a week. It has 40k miles. I love the paint. It has buell race exhaust. I noticed it has banke rear sets.

She said she still had it when I emailed her today. She deleted her ad and I really thought she sold it

With that nice brake pedal arm, I bet the shifter is as nice - looks to be a Banke. You have the later shock and front brake rotor, and it's a great color.

Hope that one works out for you. First year of Fuel Injection and everything...

While the S1 seat is "no worse" than some sport bike seats...if you travel distances at all - You will enjoy that S3 more. and there are a lot of great rides up where you are -

Great thanks lynrd. I guess I can say my first love is that s3. Yes the color is great. The owner said there was some tuning done to match the pipe and air cleaner. BTW is it me or is that carbon fiber air cleaner one of the sexiest parts of the aftermarket niche.

I'm glad to hear that it has a newer shorter? shock.

The bike has 40k miles. Are they're things I should look out for

Indeed the carbon air cleaner is sexy... So much so that I built my dash out of one : ).

Mine is an S2T though, and the carbon Hamcam was an old Maverick aftermarket piece that had no indention.

Oh wow that's really cool. I like it. Also I had no idea s2 bikes came with clip on bars. Did you cringe at every hole you drilled?

I dunno if I can swing the 2600 for that blue s3.. not sure if she will take 2k.. maybe 2200

this kid with the ratty s1 told me he would take 2k for it but honestly with the issues it has I can't see paying that much when I could buy a super clean m2 or that s3 for a few hundred more.

I could try to sell the chain setup and the factory buell clip ons. Fix the exhaust. Paint the tank. Oh and it needs a rear rotor. The front floaters are still in good shape. And the sprocket nut locking bolts.. he said those are messed up and he jammed one screw in lol.

I thought about offering $1700

I gave under that For a 98 S3 in your area with very low miles, but by the time I had done the upgrades that '99 has, I paid quite a bit more than that.

With a little bit of work, she now looks like this, and it would take 5 grand or better to pry her away from me.

If you can get that '99 less than what she dropped it to you, I'd be on that deal like a hungry dog on a ham sandwich.

Yeah the S2 had some steel clip-ons from the factory; these are Wes-Tek Billet clip-ons with aluminum bars, but with 7/8" bars welded to the cut 1" bars to use S1 controls, a mod that was on the bike when I got it. I'm a customizer, so drilling isn't a huge deal to me, more so because this bike was already modded a bit and somewhat in pieces when I got it. I bought it at an extremely good deal from a good friend of mine that still has a few S2s. Some of the other mods I've added are de-arched XBR mirrors, Brembo radial master cylinder from a Duc 999, ZX6R clutch perch, ASV levers, and a custom dual reverse cone megaphone muffler that makes the exhaust a 2-1-2 setup. The bike also had a T-storm top end, cams, and SE ignition when I bought it.

John your S3 is gorgeous. I love the red frame (so much that I've been heavily contemplating powdering mine red). I know you really like the white, which looks great, but you should consider doing a carbon fiber overlap on the bodywork, at least one of your sets : D.

I am close in Vallejo have seen the s1 list a few times for less - straight pipe - I would not give him more than 1k for that . It has been beat. I only buy from older guys like myself. For only 2k though your going to be limited.
I love my m2 as long as there is no wind. For wind I like my s2 which I picked up for 2500. Keep looking you will find something.

Nah borrow the cash to get the S3!!! Sell the extras afterward if you need cash. It's a much better bike and deal IMO.

This lady with the blue s3 is not being very nice.

Found this in Washington. 97 needs some upgrades? I like how the m2 is carb'd and more torque which would work better for touring

97 and 98 S3 is carbed too. S3s had a little more factory go-fast poured in - heads and cams, I think. There are lots of little changes in the various model years of the tubers.

You know - if you really want to spin some wrenches - I have most of a 2000 S3T rolling chassis here in San Jose that I would sell pretty cheap to an enthusiast who wanted to save a tuber. Frame is freshly powder coated in Bright silver, Volcano Grey bodywork. Title is clean, no salvage branding, in my name and non-opped so no registration hassles either. You'd need an engine, but I could supply most of the rest of the bike in the spirit of tuber resurrection and general garage hygiene.

Regarding the blue s3...

"Listen, I wouldn't sell that bike to you for $3500, or $4000.

The bikes too good for you.

Don't apologize for low balling me after you just did exactly that. Or for offending me.

Want a lesson? You need one.

Don't make an offer on anything without looking at it. You end up looking like a clown.

Now go take that red nose, and big shoes off and buy the other bike, ok?

Piss off."

I wrote.....

"Wow very harsh. Who are you to judge who I am? If I'm good enough or not for your bike? You sound like a typical harley owner. Its all made of gold right? Making a offer after everything you told me is not flying blind or a unforgivable sin.

Your very rude and i hope you dont act like this to your riding buddies

I hope you can realize I'm just trying to save a few bucks and SORRY your ad is weeks expired and I can't read it to know NOT TO LOW BALL WITHOUT SEEING THE BIKE."
