Hey Kevin, nice work there. It really looks sharp, and since I only live out in Whitewater, I would love to see it in person sometime. Still putting together thoughts on color schemes for myself.
What are thoughts on vinyl wrapping a tank? Could that increase the chances of tank bubble by restricting airflow? I have a spare tank I would like to try that has no bubbling issues. |

Thomas, thanks for the post! I would definitely be up for meeting up sometime once the bike is up and running! As far as the vinyl wrapping goes, my thoughts may not be correct but here they are anyway. The paint and primer already restricts airflow/breathing anyway. In fact I would bet that the tanks that do bubble are because the primer allows the plastic to breath to much and the fumes push the paint up. So as far as wrapping would go, as long as the tank isn't already bubbling, I would think you would have a good chance that wrapping wouldn't make it bubble. Again, that's all just theory, I would certainly be interested to hear what others think.
David, thanks for the continued interest! I would love to have the swingarm powdercoated black, however my oven isn't big enough to fit it, and its just not in the budget to have it done. So I had to make the call to clean it up and leave it bare. I do think it looks ok right now because it matches the case. I did coat the swingarm block, so if I ever wanted to do the swingarm down the road it wouldn't be to big of a project. |

I probably should have put these up a little while ago, but better late than never!
It was warmer outside than inside last week (damn wisconsin spring), so the project moved outside for that night. Don't judge the fact that my shop is part of an old barn, thats how it all started way back for Buell too (well sort of)!

So I'm getting ready to start the bike for the first time since I put everything back together. Last week I just finished hooking up most of the harness and wanted to check to make sure it would turn over ok, the carb had fuel in the bowl, but the gas tank was not hooked up. I hit the starter and she fired up on the first crank! I was actually surprised, I really wasnt planning on starting it yet. I shut it down right away, but I was excited to hear it start so easy.
I wanted to ask if anyone has any advice for the first time I run the bike for real. I'm a little weary of running everything after having drained all the oil and having the oil pump off. So any tips for the first time I actually let it run?
Also what is the spec for the amount of oil in the primary? I'm sure I can find it somewhere, but it would be nice if someone knew off hand. |

I would remove the plugs and turn it over in 15 second increments until oil pressure light went out. Make sure the oil lines running to and from the oil pump are not kinked or crimped in the tight routing the s1 oil lines have. The oil capacity for the transfer case is like just shy of 1 qt, stand the bike upright when you add it and it should come up to the bottom of the clutch thing as specified in the manual. Bike is looking great, keep the pics coming. |

Actually on second thought, if I had just spent a boatload of money rebuilding the motor, I would temporarily install a simple oil pressure gage and use that to monitor oil pressure during the priming, start up and initial operation. Oil pressure gages are cheap and easy to install, just remove the oil pressure switch on the front of the motor and screw the line in there. Clamp the meter to the bars and keep an eye on it during your initial runs. Cheap insurance. In fact I've been thinking of installing one permanently on my S1. |

Sean, thanks for the write up! Sounds like a pretty good start up procedure. I really like the idea of an oil pressure meter. It would be a nice way to make sure your engine is getting oil. Not to mention it would give you a heads up to a crank seal failure, that is before the primary over flows and dumps oil everywhere! |

So I took her out for the maiden ride last night. I had someone in front and behind me on account of not having wired the turn signals or tail light yet. She ran like a champ, but definitely needs some jetting, as it's way to rich right now. Just a quick blast down to the gas station to make sure everything ran right and nothing was over looked.

It's a full force exhaust. It's loud as hell haha. I still have to weld a tab on the front to to support it better and try to keep it from cracking, as I hear they are known to do. |

That is really coming along nicely!! I really like the white frame, it really makes it stand out! Nice to ride it after so much work isn't it!!!

For this year I will probably keep it black. I sprayed the tank a couple weeks ago in matte black, and I still have to spray the rear section. I was also thinking white lettering. My buddy does vinyl decals, I would probably have him cut them out of a pearl white vinyl to match the frame. I just have to settle on exactly what tank lettering I want.
And flip the headlight brackets of course!!  |

Also I'm kicking around the the idea of 2 white stripes down the center. Hell if I don't like it, peel it off! Not to mention it will probably be repainted next off season. I am on a strict deadline this year. She still has to be proved out before my trip from Milwaukee to The Tail of The Dragon over memorial day weekend. |

I had vinyl stickers made for mine too. Kept the "Buell" stock font and size, "American Motorcycles" was cut in a retro-reflective red (like my wheel stripes) bold script and laid over the top. Next time I do it, it will be lower but still over the Buell label.
Also had race stripes made, same measurements as the red stripe edition X1's stripes. Fun project, kind of a pain to get them to run straight but turned out okay, use a wheel stand so the bike is vertical and it's a lot easier.
Much less expensive than the high gloss paint I'd originally planned, maybe not show quality, but it'll hold up for a while 'til the high-zoot paint can be sprayed.

Thanks Kevin, I had to sell the XB last summer but hate to remove the pic.
I really dig these restoration projects that are coming up every so often, thanks for keeping the thread alive and up to date. I'd love to strip the old bike down as you've done and really clean her up and get fresh paint one of these days. |
