Looks very cool. Sounds like you're going to have a sweet bike once you're done with this bike project.

Haha thanks, I literally just though it on to make sure I could put the bolt in from the bottom.

3D printing is an amazing technology, its growing so fast. I really wouldnt be surprised to see it spread to production parts not just prototypes. The materials they are able to print is growing everyday. Its so cool!

Puls, I couldn't work out what this comment meant.

Hero MotoCorp, says that a 100cc bike takes about four weeks for the development of the concept model based on CD printing also known as rapid prototyping. A more functional stage of the model wherein sitting and riding the two-wheeler is possible takes a lead time of 8-10 weeks.

What's the difference between a prototype and a running bike where 3D printing is involved?

Rocket, one is done with mock-up pieces as pictured above, the other is made with the real material.

I divert all questions on 3D printing towards Purpony haha, he has a much better understanding of the technology. I have only used it for producing prototype models of designs. There are seemingly endless uses for it, from prototypes, to casting, and more recently the sintering and melting 3D rapid prototyping that Purpony was discussing. This allows for actual production quality pieces to be "printed" from just a CAD model, it also allows for really complicated geometries to be produced easily.
This is a pretty decent video of the SLS prototyping:

With the new front isolator replacement kit from American Sport Bike, has anyone noticed that the bolt is a different size from the stock? I believe the stock is a 1/2-13 and the kit from American Sport Bike comes with a 7-16-14. Its a through bolt with a nut, so the threads arent really an issue, I'm just wondering if the extra slop in the through hole of the motor mount could be an issue. The main reason I ask is because if it could be an issue, I would like to change it in my design for the mount I'm machining. Thoughts?

I picked up the frame from the powder coater today. I went with a bright pearl white. It has a kind of matte finish and the pearl comes through in the light. These pictures don't even come close to doing it justice.

That's what I want to do to my S1 when I finish my S2.... Did you find a color close to the factory white? I'm trying to sort what color of white I'll do mine in, tough to tell from a small card how it will really look on a bike....

Jolly,
I definitely understand that. I spent hours looking at pictures of cars and bikes For Inspiration. I went back and forth on color combinations so many times that my buddies started telling me I was like a girl choosing nail polish, the truth is it was much worse! The white I picked wasn't based off the stock color, when I finally picked a color scheme I knew I wanted a white frame with a matte finish and a bit of metallic in it to make it more interesting than plain white, just enough to grab attention in the right light. I went into the shop that I have do all the powder coating I can't handle myself, looked at samples and ended up picking the pearl white that's on it. I'm incredibly happy with how it came out, I'll update with better pictures in light that shows the pearl soon.

Now you need to cut the rear end off and modify it with a stubby seat that sticks straight up in the back. : )

Kevin,
Can you go back in and edit your post?
Put a "enter" behind the first link to the picture, that way they display vertically instead of horizontally.
Makes it easier for folks with small screens or mobile apps to see the post.

I was really tempted to post a picture of a cut up s1 with what I would call a silly looking tail, but I restrained myself out of fear of turning this thread into a s1 flame war haha.

Kevin, didn't work.

I should have showed you and example.
When you post a picture the source looks like this (without the quote " marks..)

The xxxxxx will be a number generated by Discuss when you upload the pictures.

"+++ jpeg +++ xxxxxx +++ +++"

If you post two pictures with out the "enter" (really a CR LF (carriage return, Line Feed)) it looks like this:

"+++ jpeg +++ xxxxxx +++ ++++++ jpeg +++ xxxxxx +++ +++"

If you put in the enter, it looks like this:
"+++ jpeg +++ xxxxxx +++ +++"
"+++ jpeg +++ xxxxxx +++ +++"

This lets the pictures stack instead of being side by side.

Darn it, Discuss is messing up the formatting.. its putting in plus signs instead of the special characters.
It should be a slash, open brace, close brace then a comma followed by a close brace.

Thanks guys, glad to hear everyone is as excited about the color as I am. Thanks for the support guys, I appreciate the continued advice and keeping this thread alive! On a side note I finally ordered tires, anyone have any experience with dunlop road smart 2's? I was looking for something with pretty good grip but mileage is really important. I can't afford to buy a new set after every season. After all it 690 miles from here to the Dragon alone!

The best order to resemble the bike... forks, drop the frame on the engine, swing arm, shock. Sound like a reasonable plan?

Fit swing arm and block to engine then drop frame over the top....best to get a manual also

Nice thread, I am also getting ready to tear my S1W down and do paint. I also am trying to come up with a paint choice that will stay with the original look. I am looking forward to seeing the color in the sun, It sounds like a great idea. Are you also doing the tank and body work? Getting the tank painted scares the hell out of me, I know a guy that will use whatever I tell him. I just wish I could be sure it wont bubble. Keep up the great work, Chuck.

Chuck,
Thanks for the right up! I am doing to tank and body work. The original paint on the tank doesn't have any bubbling, so I feel pretty lucky for that. I'm thinking of trying to do a vinyl wrap on the tank and body work. I can get the vinyl from a friend for cost, so even if I end up not liking it, I won't be out much. Also with a wrap I won't need to disturb the non bubbled tank. But if it ever does start to bubble, I'll just rip off the vinyl and repaint the tank.
