My brother and i have both had the oil cap pop off while riding, both S3's his only lost a little oil while mine was more severe which got me thinking...

I remember seeing in the past a billet threaded oil cap/dipstick for Tubers.... but i no longer see them listed at American Sport Bike or elsewhere, does anybody remember these and know if they can still be found?

Banke Performance, don't know if they still sell it but the owner made me a one off of a part they used to make. The cost wasn't all that bad, nice guy.
I have the oil cap, you have to clean the filler neck throughly and epoxy a part to it, after that the cap screws down tight, no popping off.

Drain 6-10 oz. of the oil and ride on.

Use the much larger capacity Dina oil filter and keep your oil level half way up the dip stick.
Problem solved.

IF YOU PUT TOO MUCH OIL IN YOUR OIL SYSTEM IT BLOW THE OEM OIL CAP AND PUKE THE EXCESS OIL OUT UNTIL THE ENGINE IS HAPPY WITH THE OIL LEVEL !!!

The air above the oil in the oil tank expands when it gets hot and the air pressure pops the cap. The trick is to create extra air space above the oil, hence the bigger dina filter allows a lower oil level in the tank creating extra space with the exact same amount of oil.

Have you actually contacted American Sport Bike to check availability? They are also handy so you don't have to worry about any crud falling into the tank when you take the plug out.

If everyone would warm their motors up prior to checking and adding fluids they wouldn't have this happen. Oil drains into the motor when the bike sits and you don't get an accurate reading. Do not add oil to a cold engine. Also, if you don't warm the bike prior to changing the oil you'll have the same problem.

Your bike should not consume much oil over the duration of an oil change unless you are riding exceptionally hard.

If you keep having to add little bit to get it to the middle of the dip stick I suggest trying it for a week or two with only 1/4" showing on the stick and seeing it the bike is still "consuming" that oil. I like keeping the reading in the middle, it was hard for me to do this, but since I have, I have never had to add oil between changes, making my bike pretty much worry free. I'm a lot happier with my bike since I stopped adding oil to it.

As Buellistic mentioned, it will blow off ALL excess until it's right. The excess is leaving your motor, so you might as well not waste the stuff.

But that threaded part is nice, and as Blks1l said, it looks like it would be easier to keep grit from accumulating around the cap, and not have to clean the top of your oil res off just to check your oil....

@littlebuggles... I do warm the motor up to check the oil, and it doesn't really consume oil so i can't remember the last time i added oil between changes.

If anybody has info on where to find the threaded oil cap that fits.. Banke or others i would appreciate it!

Couldn't some kind of air vent be worked into the cap? Or would it necessarily become an 'oil vent'? Could pipe it to dump on the ground, like the fuel tank air vent.

Sorry, that came off like an accusation.

I searched all options (in case it was misplaced under wheels or body) on the S1 section of American Sport Bike, then I checked the XB section, cause the XB's use a threaded plastic dipstick and thought maybe you has confused those parts. Then I did a quick scan of the S3 parts but found nothing there as well.

I think Storz used to offer a threaded cap for our bikes. I'll see what I can find. I have not found the part on A.S.B. at this point though.

Kay, so after looking on the internet for a bit I've gone back to searching this site.

I found several references to American Sport Bike and Trojan selling a threaded cap:

I bought my '99 S3 new and it has always popped the oil cap. There have been several launches, 1/2 popped cap - with the slow oil leak down the side of the tank, etc...

I took sticky-backed foam and pasted it to the underside of the seat, over the cap to prevent such happenings... cause they happened all the time. This did not work all the time. The pressure would still pop the sucker just enough to catch an edge. Even the few times it was in a shop, after the oil change the mechanics commented on launching the cap.

I have run different oils, different oil filters, checked my oil level constantly, changed the oil cap... and it still popped. The ONLY thing that prevented this was a low oil level. Hot, it was just touching the tip of the dip stick. I even went thru the hassle of draining and measuring the amount of oil. They run so little oil to begin with, I didn't want to run less. I bought and installed the screw-type cap from American Sportbike. Problem solved, finally!!

Check under "Oil Fillers" on the Banke Website dropdown for Buell Parts and Accessories... it's still there.
I've had one on my '98 S1W forever and prefer it over the stock bit.

Maybe it's my internet filters but I only see the XB dipstick under the Buell parts.

Either way, I would contact them if you really want the part. From the site it appears they will make a part for you if you ask, tube frame shifter parts are available per order.

Banke will make parts to order. They made an engine blanking plate for me. It was $130, pricey but well made.
I agree that the oil needs to be checked when warm, but the screw in dip stick makes things a lot neater.

I am using this Hd temp gauge oil cap.....The dip stick is longer and the ribs on the oil cap are a tad longer. I have trouble getting the cap off sometime because it fits so snug. here is a link to what i am using.

I'm interested in one of the threaded caps myself as I don't like the proximity of dirt so near the hole that the oil enters.
I contacted James Banke and he said he'd make them if he could get an order of 15-20.
So, as I'm not a sponsor I sent another email to Al at American Sport Bike to see if he wanted to compile a list of folk or add some to inventory just so "I" can have one.

I'm in as well. I always wanted to buy one, never did, and then they were no longer available.

Never had any problems with popping the dipstick out, but I never liked the idea of dirt falling into the tank.

I think there's cross-reference charts to other brands of 'long filter' like Motorcraft, Fram, etc. I don't have the link handy but I know I saw it recently. Pretty easy to find one cheap at AutoZone if you have the chart.
