After redoing rings and gaskets my dip stick keeps popping out. Anybody know why it would do this? Thanks Garrett

nope guess im worried I may have covered an oil passage or something any way I can pull one of the lines off and see if its pumping through or buiding back pressure?

Did you re-run any of your breather lines?

Did you replace your umbrella valves?

ok, here's my guess, hope i'm wrong.... i'm guessin that you put the compression rings on upside down and now you have alot of blowby..... which inturn presurizes the oil tank.... again, i hope i'm wrong and its simpeler than that.

Best guess is it sat and oil drained from tank into sump. Then you filled it up to line and now its really full--or pinched the vent line.

I tripled checked the lines nothings pinched. oil still checking ok on dip stick. If it had drained into sump would it end up over filling the tank when running? Was about 1 in the morning when I did the rings on the rear cylinder wondering if I did get it on upside down.

Let it warm up,change oil, what you should do anyway after the first 50 miles
during break in and refill the oil tank. This seems to be the best way to eliminate that eventuality,IMO.

My 2 cents
Got a call a few years back from someone with the same problem.

Turned out to be the oil filter. after thinking about the problem for a few minutes, I just started following the oil lines looking for a kinked or pinched line. After that checked out, I decided to just pull the filter and look at it.
Once I got the filter off I could here it rattling, The internals worked loose causing
flow issues.

Do a search, it doesn't seem to be all that uncommon. Mine did it once, I believe because it was very, very cold and the oil was not warmed up yet.

If the rings were installed incorrectly and it is blowby causing the oil cap to launch itself, wouldn't it also show up as a lot more pressure and spewage from the rocker box breathers?

My dipstick almost launched itself into oblivion when I was started the bike after an oil change with the seat off (the people standing around me, my dad and his second wife, were not pleased when I splattered them with oil).

I had so much oil in it, it bubbled out of the oil bag all over my freshly detailed bike. It took me forever to find that dipstick, too.

Garrett:

The dipstick on my S3 was popping out too. I bought the bike in December and know the dealer had way overfilled it. [This Honda dealer had no idea how to change oil in a Buell.] Anyway, even with the correct oil level it kept building pressure. What I did was to take off the vent line at the tank and blow into it gently with an air hose. I heard all kinds of gurgling at first and then it blew clear. Since then (~1000 miles) I have had no dipstick popping. My thought is that the vent line was blocked by oil and could not clear itself.

Hey, that sounds like a shortcut to me! I'm always irritated at how tight the oil cap is and the fact that I have to pry it out.

I bought my '99 S3 new and it has always popped the oil cap. There have been several launches, 1/2 popped cap - with the slow oil leak down the side of the tank, etc...

I took sticky-backed foam and pasted it to the underside of the seat, over the cap to prevent such happenings... cause they happened all the time. This did not work all the time. The pressure would still pop the sucker just enough to catch an edge. Even the few times it was in a shop, after the oil change the mechanics commented on launching the cap.

I have run different oils, different oil filters, checked my oil level constantly, changed the oil cap... and it still popped. The ONLY thing that prevented this was a low oil level. Hot, it was just touching the tip of the dip stick. I even went thru the hassle of draining and measuring the amount of oil. They run so little oil to begin with, I didn't want to run less. I bought and installed the screw-type cap from American Sportbike. Problem solved, finally!!

Hey Tunes, what happens if you open the timing plug and run the engine?
I think someone sells crank breather kits for that. At least i saw someone with a breather there.
Your umbrella valves might be in upside down or something.

When I put new rings in my M2 it popped the cap the first time I started it with the seat off too. It settled down after the rings seated in.

A question on the vent line from the oil reservoir. Where does it vent to?

Thanks,

When you changed the oil did you fill the new filter with oil before you screwed it on? If you didnt you have a huge air bubble that will build up pressure as the oil pump returns the oil air mixture in the crankcase.
if you put all the new oil in before the oil filter and crankcase oil vent air you will find the cap blows off because when on the side stand the return line is under the oil level the small vent line can't handle the rapid pressure build up. Once it vents the the the oil shouldnt blow off the cap unless you have another problem

i've seen people ask if the oil filter is filled prior to installation some times previously. i haven't figured out how to install a full oil filter without dumping the oil out of the filter all over the front of the bike. any advice on that?

my take on this is, the oil tank is not vented to atmosphere. Sportsters have a second vent line to breath freely, they dont blow caps! Brian

Natexlh1000, I've checked (re: disassembled - reassembled) the entire oil/breather system. My opinion on the subject of my bike is: the hole in the oil tank for the oil cap is too big. I've also checked so many other similiar year bikes, I've stopped. Conclusion: hole too big.

Still have your X1? Nice bike.

I agree, this WOULD solve the problem.... thought I have only blown the cap once(was half awake, and wasnt thinking)...

The only way to do this porperly, woudl be a semi-elaborate line routing, to, creat a trap, adn minimize oil blow through under hard corners.......might not even be that hard..but, I just put the right amount of oil on mine, and call it good...

But, it woudl seem as though you are building up ALOT more pressure in your bag for some reason... at least thats my take...

Yes. I still have my X1. I love it lots.

No. It has never popped it's oil cap.
There is something actually wrong if yours does. I can open my tank wile it's running and there is no pressure at all.
(Just a mess to clean up. Ask me how I know.)

Perhaps a kinked oil line somewhere?
Get a nice bright flashlight an look behind the cam cover's façade for any hoses that look... well "wrong".

Bought my S1W used. Noticed that the prev owner had stuck a rubber block on top of the dipstick to keep it from popping up. It's one of those 3/4 x 3/4 x 3/4 rubber blocks with a sticky bottom that you use to protect pictures, and furniture and stuff. It fills the space between the dipstick and the seat pan. The dipstick pulls out way too easy. My bike has always been dealer serviced and has no mechanical problems. I assumed the prev owner put the block on just because the dipstick worked it's way out (partially)under normal use. Now you guys will have me looking for all sorts of symptoms/problems!!!

If you ran synthetic oil before (or during) startup, likely your rings are not seating. Had you installed them upside-down, you'd have billowing white smoke (ask how I know)The top ring isn't tapered like the second, so it will seal either way but the second ring actually pumps oil up when upside down. If you have synthetic, or did, be sure to change it to standard automotive oil for a few hundred miles, and run it without using more than about 2/3 throttle. Let it rev up a bit without lugging or loading. You should feel the rings come in after 100 miles or so. Premium synthetics like Amsoil or Royal Purple racing will actually spoil a breakin by the residual oil-in an engine which has had synthetics, I install the pistons/rings with nothing more than WD40 on them, and rev it pretty good right at startup to be sure the rings get hot enough to seat before the synth gets to them.

here we go....... this is gonna be a big debate, but i've gotta take the bait..... i'll keep my thoughts asside and just ask the question....... if syn oils spoil break in, how do you explain the fact that many hd's come with syn installed from the factory..... as well as many auto's ie corvette, bmw, mercades, etc....

Hmmm rev it good upon start up?????????????
Kind of sounds like the opposite of a break in!
To say a motor wont break in with synthetic means what? the metal does not wear at all with synthetic therefore not allowing rings to seat? I dont think so. If synthetic oil was that good we would never have to rebuild an engine, also never lose compression right?

I explain the fact by knowing that the factory runs those engines in, not the purchaser.
Synthetic oil will not prevent break-in. It prolongs it, sometimes over a painfully long time. Secondarily, I can assure you that a significant portion of (HD, by direct experience) buyers will ruin their new engine by running it hard before the rings seat (~500 miles or so, sometimes more)and blowing the oil off the walls and skirts, scuffing the pistons. I'd be surprised to find anyone who's been around HD for more than one riding season without hearing a story something like '...inept mechanic installed my performance parts and the pistons were too tight...' etc.
