Jumping off buildings thinking they could fly, etc. Meanwhile, doctors experimenting with the new drugs found them useful for marriage counseling and treating mentally ill. Looks like MDMA is quite popular for couples therapy. ( as a friend who took it told me, you get "I love you man" drunk without the motor skills loss, for hours. And the self censor circuits are offline, so you'll tell a pack of Hells Angels how stupid Harleys are. In vino veritas. Makes a perfect therapy for emotionally unavailable couples, if you don't go talk to your neighbors! And the session is moderated by a pro. ) And I've known since the first person I had to talk down from a bad trip, that some people can't handle getting altered brain chemistry. I had the advantage of reading Dr. Timothy Leary and Electric Koolade Acid Test. ( The Carlos Castaneda fantasy novel wasn't useful except to help detect phoney spiritualism a little) And I try to never forget the variability of humans to drugs, from Mushrooms to blood pressure meds, to acne meds. ( one TV advertised acne drug side effects include suicidal & homicidal thoughts, which makes me think creams and soaps may be a wiser choice. Otoh, increased risk of tuberculosis may be a fair trade in a Hepatitis drug. ) Up front, libertarian views and historical context, tell me Prohibition leads Organized Crime and poisonous drug additives & bad or nonexistent QC. See also 100,000++ fentanyl deaths last year. So... There's inevitably going to be a certain percentage of people who can't handle altered states of mind. Legalize anything, and there will be a surge of problem people who were too inhibited to indulge under Prohibition. There's probably a pile of good research papers possible investigating the phenomenon. | ||

It's meant to illustrate the flexibility and value of market economy. The Soviet government mandated a certain Quantity of Nail production, by # of nails produced per month. So the factories made brads. The Glorious Leaders wanted nails for construction, so there was a big shortage. So... Change to kilos of nails per month. Factories made big spikes. Shortage worse! I don't actually buy the story, uncritically, it's different machines for different size nails, and I really doubt they could meet Quota doing 100% on one size while stopping the rest. But it IS believable that Soviet factories would focus on meeting quotas and ignoring actual demand, and running the brad, then spike machines full time and the rest just enough is possible and likely. So if your primary metric is # of cars sold, you get Chevy selling cars at a loss. If the primary metric is percentage of gasoline to electric cars, you don't make any gas cars, and any electric car production over zero gets you the government money. And if your primary metric is the Harvard MBA goal of more profit each month ( or other arbitrary time unit like quarter ) then you get deforestation and strip mine wastelands and then layoffs, and collapse. Elon obviously had a goal of long term profitable sales. So without the Harvard Stupid, he was willing to invest in learning to build more efficiently and take initial losses. | ||

There is a reason Henry Ford got rich. Actually many... One is he struck a deal with Firestone to make tires. 4 tires per car, biggest contract ever! Each 4 tires were shipped on a cheap sheet steel pallet built to Ford's plans. Firestone still made a profit, so why not? And he ordered engine blocks from a big foundry. Each casting shipped in a wooden crate of Ford's design. Big profit for foundry, why not? Thus Henry got a floor pan & wood precut for the Model T body, for free. Genius. Also... In the 1950s, Japan started buying used glass liquor ( and other ) bottles from the Soviet Union. Megatons. There's a fracking undersea mountain of glass off the coast of Japan where they dumped them. Why? The glass was shipped in wood crates, in a species common in Siberia, but vanishingly rare in Japan, used for fine furniture. Smart people. | ||

I'm reminded that some Pyramid fans insist it's aliens that spread the Secret Knowledge of pyramid building from Egypt to America to Asia. Thor Heyerdahl proved it was possible to sail contemporary boats across the oceans. Twice, 2 hemispheres, 2 different designs and materials. Plus.. Well, a pyramid is a shape you can pile rocks in that doesn't fall over. And nature's hills, same reason for shape. So the SHAPE is a logical design obvious to people anywhere. And the parallel irony that for literally thousands of years, pyramids unattended get covered with wind blown dirt, and vegetation, until scientists thought they were odd hills. All over the world. Iirc, one 19th century European occupation of Babylon dug deep into the biggest hill inside the ruined walled city, and confirmed that it was a pyramid, before storing food and gunpowder inside. And all over South & Central America, multi -spectral imaging shows vast man made structures in the forests. Using the technology to see differences in plant life. This tech used in agriculture and law enforcement, shows different plants, weeds on roads and structures, vs. farm fields. Also used to find pot plants, and plant disease spread, hidden in fields and forests. ( a great example that technology can be used for good and evil. ) | ||

Lots of stuff well known to Romans in the 4th Century that to this day is only found in isolated Greek monasteries and was utterly unknown to 14-18th century "First World" Empires. to be fair, when some British officer asked the locals about the ruins on the hill, they typically responded that it's Always been there. Wow, a busy week this afternoon! I've been working on a time machine for years, based on Einstein's Special Relativity Theory and the 11 dimensional quantum theory, starting when I realized you needed 12 dimensions to be able to fold them into our common 4. I have not mentioned it, since the implications are enormous and I didn't want to be considered a crackpot for the idea if I was wrong. As it turns out, the Grandfather Paradox resolves similarly to the MCU time branch fiction, in that you can't change your own past, but travel back splits off a branch you are then stuck on, and dumps you into a new "present" which is then insulated from change, your time machine impossible, and knowledge of the old time line erased from existence! So it was at the urging of my fellow Badwebbers that this afternoon I traveled back to 1923 and using 21st century drugs, faked the heart attack of the vile leader of the Nazi Party in Germany, stopping the racist horrors and a war, from a world only I can remember. So... Dietrich Eckert never came to rule Europe. And I saved the lives of dozens of Jews he would have had executed, among the hundreds of thousands killed in his war of conquest. It is done. Now I'm having trouble finding the 22nd season opener of Firefly, which was delayed until after President Kennedy's scheduled speech on the Martian colony rescue mission this evening???? | ||
