They welcomed the Nazis because they rid Ukraine of the mass murdering Russians. They would have welcomed anyone who stopped Stalin-apostrope-s wholesale slaughter of innocents. No one knew what the Nazis really were at the time. Calling present day Ukranians Nazis is just a slanderous lie. Or Russian propaganda. Same thing.

I think that the nazi genocide was known by then, but maybe not by Ukrainians behind the Iron Curtain, since the Germans were Stalins buddies until then. Also Ukrainians had a lot of the prevalent anti-Jewish sentiment anyway.

Ducbsa, you're over thinking it. Ukraine was conquered and subject to genocide by the Soviets. Tens of millions murdered and deliberately starved to death. Ukrainian people called subhuman monsters to justify mass murder.

In comes the German Nazis to fight the Worst Bad Guys in history. ( to that date, Mao was just an unknown warlord in distant China then ) Totally understand taking ANY help to kick Soviet occupiers out.

All the Ukrainian people would know about Nazi genocide from behind Soviet borders is Soviet Agitprop. And no one sane believes that!

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1945_(Gingrich_and_Forstchen_novel)

Spoilers in wiki article.

Pretty good novel, nifty premise, well written. But dang it! Cliffhanger ending and no sequel! ( political enemies media hated it, of course )

The alternative history turning point here is that Hitler was in a plane crash and hospitalized on Dec. 7 1941. Himmler declared support for the U.S. against Japanese Aggression. "We'll join you after this little unpleasantness in Europe is settled"... So America never fights the Nazis and conquers Japan with a horrifically fought invasion. ( without pressure of the threatened Nazi A bomb the Manhattan Project was slower )

As Speculative Fiction goes, it's low on sci-fi and fantasy and fairly plausible in premise.

( My Uncle Rusty, Seabee, USN, was waiting off Okinawa to invade Kyushu in the second wave with his bulldozer. He had zero doubt the A Bomb saved millions of lives, and probably his. )

Contrast with Turtledove's Hot War series. Also a logical political inflection point.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Turtledove_b ibliography

Vs. The Guns Of The South, a time travel interference tale. ( a sub genre which is often just an excuse to give modern weapons to historical armies.)

For the best imho of THAT genre, I recommend,

Spoilers!

I point out that the asteroid strike that created Iceland hasn't been mapped out. The hole it made in the crust was expanded by the steam explosion as the ocean fell into the hole... After the initial circular multi mile high waterfall held back by live steam collapsed.

You'd need ocean core samples to find the edges of shattered and melted rock.

https://www.space.com/meteorite-that-crashed-to-ea rth-3500-years-ago-carved-into-arrowhead-by-bronze -age-hunters

Looks like tales of wonder weapons forged from fallen stars ( meteorite metal ) has a factual basis. For a Bronze Age smith, meteor metal is a refined metal unattainable with available technology.

I know guys that make knives from steel and stainless steel cable. It's a cheat/head start to Damascus type layering.

Twisting rods of steel together by heating in a coal fired forge is an early step in getting layers of high & low carbon steel, used for millennia. Starting with a cable of twisted steel is a great short cut.

The legendary Japanese swords using folded multiple times steel is a by product of the lousy sand ore they find in river banks. Until the Bessemer process of pumping air into liquid iron was developed, you basically have to literally beat the silicon ( sand ) out of thin layers of iron and then weld them together with hammers to get a useful blade.

Go back to the Bronze age when they didn't have forced draft furnaces hot enough to process iron ore into anything except rusty crud, a chunk of nickel iron from the core of a planet torn apart by cosmic cataclysm and Jupiter's gravity is a magical item from the heavens dropped to Earth.

Actually according to the internet, Elon Musk & Oprah Winfrey used space lasers to start the fires so they could buy land cheaper. And it saves on demolition costs for their enlarged Estates.

Which is far from the craziest thing I read this week.

The highest probability reason for this fire was electrical grid decay plus imported/invasive grass which burns fast in high winds from the Typhoon.

But Oprah & space lasers sounds cooler than poor forestry management and money that should have repaired power lines spent on Chinese products encouraged by their paid representative, Just Joe*.

https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2023/08/the -prophet-of-power-density.php

Energy density is important in mobile batteries and land use.

Diffuse energy collection requires huge collectors.

The dual use solar panels, like on rooftops, don't take up precious farm and park land, just giant mines, factories, and toxic waste dumps.

And deserts are ecologically fragile. There are still tracks from horse drawn wagons visible in many areas from well over a century ago.

Heck, I know pilots who seek out the concrete arrows planted across America to guide early airliners. ( almost all gone to suburbs in the East, but still in the West, in deserts. )

In 50 years, most of the Big solar farms of today will be rusty scrap metal and broken kinda toxic glass with concrete stumps.

Every year in the western US, actual forest experts complain that the Greenie Idiocy Policies on major fire spread causes, ( not being allowed to clear dead wood ) makes the annual fires worse. Every year those policies make fires worse.

Annual fires have been the California norm since the first humans walked there from Asia ( or sailed there ) Native histories, passed down tell us so. The Geography makes them understandable. An ocean, mountain ranges, deserts, physics. The hot dry winds are a phenomenon known in various parts of the world. Cali has low rainfall and not only flammable trees, but imports dried wood in mass quantities ( since regulation is against sustainable development of wood crops ) to build houses.

On a Nature scale, the Idiot White Locals not only forbid the old Native ( at least the latest immigrants before the European invasion ) practices of forest management. They also pile tinder in neat geometric patterns. On our human scale, those are houses, but to fires, they're fuel packaged and arranged...

Locally, where wild fires are rare and small, we've had days of red Sun and air quality alerts. Canadian arson wild fires are big enough that this cigarette smoker can smell woodsmoke, and eyes burning. ( It's impacted my outdoor bicycling, as I struggle to fight to rebuild/delay my aging crippled body's descent into entropy )

News out of the Canadian Dictatorship is interesting since the ( largely arson started ) fires are Politically Inconvenient, ( Canadian Greenies ruined forest management there, too. And to say so is Blasphemy. )

Unfortunately my default proposals for solving problems like wild fires are economically impractical and politically difficult. It would take so many repeated flights of airplanes dropping politicians in the fires to put them out it would take all the funds earmarked for pronoun enforcement.

Modern medicine.

As a First Aid Amateur for decades, I've watched as they changed the CPR rules, based, to be sure, on ACTUAL SCIENCE, to improve my chances of keeping you alive until someone arrives with an AED.

I'm not complaining, or mocking the new CPR rules. In fact, I've Embraced the latest "chest compressions only" technique, in part because mouth to mouth is horrible, and mostly because if I'm ramming your breastbone half way to your spine, you will gasp air, plenty to get some O2 into the blood, that I'm trying to keep circulating to the brain. ( Also actual test show it takes 3-5 pumps to get the blood flowing at all, there's usually plenty of O2 in the blood already and getting it to where it's needed is more important to survival than getting a small amount into the blood stagnating in the lung with Mouth to mouth )

I admit to a little disappointment to the discovery that the odds are good that without a jolt of electricity, preferably computer controlled, just pushing on your chest won't bring you magically back to life.

But I do know from experience that half dead drowning victims Do have a good chance at waking back up and convulsively clearing their own airways, that closed due to a reflex action & resulted in them losing consciousness and not breathing. I also learned to aim the face away from me and be alert to the reaction to feeling like an elephant is repeatedly stomping on them. ( Lifeguard & WSI )

I'm also a former blood thinner victim. And I've been given drugs that literally were banned weeks later.

Science is NEVER SETTLED. Science changes with new revelations of Fact.

Religion is a fixed belief system. If Jesus is Your Savior, the church you subscribe to isn't going to switch over to telling you that Judas the skeptic is the Real Deal, but they might change the rules on eating a burger. That last is man written rules, the first is Core foundation.

Ditto Science... Newton figured out the basic math for Gravity as a force. Einstein figured out the math and logic for the "space creates gravity" theory, which gave more accurate results, and now the "space & time means movement, & movement means gravity" theory builds upon the Newtonian Core observations, and corrects the errors... maybe. We still haven't figured out the subject, and until you can buy anti gravity belts to play zero G soccer, we still won't have.

That doesn't mean that there is nothing you can count on in science. If you drop the socket into the engine bay of your car, it WILL fall into the engine bay. And Murphy's Law says it will go where it's hard to reach, but that's more philosophy than science.

It is also a cold hard fact that if the distributor happens to have been removed, the socket will go into the hole, land, and remain, on the top of the crankshaft such that cracking the pan reveals not the socket, and you have to remove the engine mounts and jack the engine up enough to get the pan clear of the engine crossmember in order to remove it. I have proven this in my entropy lab.

How's the quality? I'm getting ready to put together a small tool pouch I can just swap from bike to trike ( I now have 2 active pedal toys ) ( And one on the indoor trainer ) so I don't have to buy 2 of everything. I've already purged the Harbor Fright allen keys... Tired of buggering bolts.

And Park tools are nice, but the idea of a Phillips screwdriver with diamond dust imbedded in the tip to get grip? ( If I ever catch up to that Phillips guy.... ) But I can't tell from a picture if it's gimmick but awesome, or gimmick and Red China junk.

Quality is high. When I got my 300L and needed to install the farkles, I used full size tools to remove stuff. When I reassembled, I only used tools I will have with me in the trail. They feel solid. More bits than I need. Thought about leaving some of them out, but they weigh next to nothing, and it is easier to tell at a glance whether I am missing something if I carry it complete.

Irony. The Inflation Redistribution Act aka, We Lied again To Get More Bribes, sends billion$ to Joe's* CCP Employers, but it was sold to Congresscritters as a jobs program for their Districts and a chance to skim Billion$ for their Donors. ( and hence million$ for them, laundered thoroughly ) That the money flowed to Enemy districts is ironic. ( and funnier when the "winning" district's Congresscritters voted against it. )

There's a Lot of Your Billion$ to go around, and because they borrowed it from your future,, you haven't got the tax bill yet, but everyone is paying big in inflation, now.

There's zero doubt the lie for a name IRA caused most inflation not directly related to Joe's* pro-CCP, pro-slavery, pro-tyranny energy policies, which is a tremendous inflationary monster itself.

Joe's minions lies about how his Bidenomics is succeeding in fighting inflation is, where there's Any truth to their misinformation, statistical deception about inflation. Reducing the rate of increase in cost of living because hundreds of thousands lost jobs that paid well because Joe's policies put the American production companies out of business, and the unemployed have less to spend, is not a net positive.

( see Aberdeen South Dakota wind turbine plant closure. Those jobs went to the CCP. Plus every Other job lost to inflation closing businesses )

That the environmental impact of the bill will be net negative in more and worse pollution and Carbon Dioxide emissions increase, is a paid feature. Just ask Joe's* multiple shell companies that laundered the bribes.

You can argue, ( you'd be wrong, but you can make a case ) that someplace like Texas or Oklahoma has a very low population density, vast, flat, range lands, and thus covering a percentage of robust hardy ecological flat land with imported from China solar panels makes sense to get Joe* more kickbacks.

Net loss in energy consumption and massive pollution in a communist slave state on the other side of the world, and the pollution of broken & dead glass panel disposal, can easily be ignored to justify stealing more taxpayer's money!

But on an ecologically fragile island chain with high population density?

True, on the big island there's lava fields you could cover in solar panels at extremely high costs. The cost of anchoring panels in solid basalt? But everywhere else you'd need to clear cut forests to build panels and bird murdering blade farms generating infrasonic unnatural animal stress problems.

There's a Reason Al Gore & Barack Obama won't allow that near THEIR beachfront mansions.
