Storm of the generation. I guess that a generation now is months.

Bomb Cyclone.

I had to look that one up, don't remember it from 20th century college classes.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-is -a-bomb-cyclone/

Ah! 1980. Too new to get into FAA weather manuals in that year, so I did miss it.

Sure, it's a pure hype label, and today it wouldn't fly, too triggering! That was during the ongoing "We're all going to die from the Ice Age!" period, and probably is inspired agitprop, as far as the name itself goes.

Real weather phenomenon, though. I studied the tropical versions, which indicated Bad Juju in tropical storm intensity.

A 40+ degrees F drop in temperature in one day can be a human level problem. If you went to work in a sports shirt and slacks, and you don't keep a warm jacket in your car, that can suck.

Looks so far to be another dump on Buffalo.

I'm glad I got the snow tires on.

Good luck and stay well. Merry Christmas.

We'll see how traffic is. I work till 5 today in MD, then drive to FL to visit family.

(Dramatic TV voice) will he make it before the storm hits? Will he be able to stay ahead of Armageddon? We. Shall. See.

Right now, at my part of Greater Cincinnati, the temperature is -9 F. If this is Armageddon, it'll be a cold day in hell.

https://www.space.com/space-solar-power-pros-cons

I'm in favor of orbital power for a couple of reasons.

You don't have to wipe snow or sand off the panels. But you do have micro meteor erosion.

Building the infrastructure to work on an industrial scale in orbit, opens vast new resources.

And despite several novels about evil governments making asteroid mining a slave like existence, it takes serious education and care to actually work there. It's not worth the reaction mass to ship up uneducated serfs. So anyone on top of the gravity well will be smart, motivated, and better positioned to to fight for freedom than wannabe tyrants hiding in a bunker, underground, at the bottom.

But, despite the enormous capital investment, and ongoing maintenance costs, orbital has many advantages over ground based solar.

However, I'm also aware that real life engineering challenges exist. That's why there aren't any commercial Mach 5 airliners. It's expensive to build an airplane that is happy running skin temperatures that melt aluminum. Not impossible, just no one has figured out a business model. Yet. And sold it to investors. Yet.

And the biggest obstacle isn't searing heat and powerful engines. It's regulation and bureaucracy.

Ditto orbital power.

Where did the term bomb cyclone come from?

Bomb cyclone may seem like new terminology. But, actually, the terminology comes out of the expression bombogenesis — a rapidly intensifying storm system. Bombogenesis is officially defined as a rapid pressure drop of at least 24 millibars in 24 hours or less — indicative of a very intense storm.

Back into the 1970s, meteorologists would say, "That storm is bombing out" because it's intensifying so quickly.

The energy inside that storm is exploding. You have a very rapid drop in pressure in the center part of the storm and a very sharp increase in the wind speed around the storm.

In the Northeast and metropolitan New York City area, we have bomb cyclones that are much more common when we go from the months of November right through even the months of March to the early part of April.

Nice simple explanation, thanks.

My meteorology classes were before the phrase was coined, and my focus in the decades since is either much bigger time scale history climate change or much smaller scale soaring related details.

If winds are predicted over 30mph, I'm not flying or sailing/kiting. My glider tops out at about 45. And if it's 30 on the ground, I'm going backwards at 1000 feet, and the thermals are shredded and I'm not staying up long. Damhik.

https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2022/12/gue ss-what-electricity-isnt-free.php

I'm on broken record on the subject of "if you want to convert a civilization to electric, you darn well better build more power plants" and it astounds me that the Climate Cult refuses to consider basic math & science.

It's like it was a religious cult dedicated to bringing back the Dark Ages ruled by Tyrants and killing off half the people on the planet... Which is the stated goals of the WEF, come to think of it.

I'm hoping to get a ride in this week if predictions are right, on my "new to me" used electric assisted trike. I got it home in time for bad/wet/cold weather to kick in, buy spring toys in fall & winter toys in spring, right? But you then have to have patience. : )

I am in concert with. My only meteorological Training was cursory spattering in pilot training.

Like you, I pretty well consider myself a “severe clear” pilot. Last 2 times I flew last month included 4 go-arounds, perfectly executed by my youngest son and old friend.

I’m guessing tv weather-folk eagerly seized the “Bomb-anything” nomenclature. It’s click bait for ratings. That’s fine, it describes a real, clearly outlined, meteorological condition.

I commend you for having and adhering to your own limits. That defines a REAL aviator.

Oh, yeah? My Caravan wouldn't start this fall in 45deg weather!

Ok, mice chewed the wiring while it was parked in my driveway, but I'm going to blame Chrysler, and Mickey while I'm at it. ( I now have mass amounts of peppermint in the car )

I've certainly seen a reduction in mileage in my hybrid in cold weather. Also my diesel. And my gasoline powered car. And me.

Just like an olde school car guy needed to avoid the gas station with the watered down gas, and use additives from time to time, an electric car guy needs to monitor his battery and be lucky enough to pick one that actually is programmed to maintain the battery. I'm not sure how many companies spent their Government money on engineering and not on executive bonuses. But I can guess.

Wonder which GM did?

With current battery tech, if you live in a place that routinely gets that cold, an electric car might not be for you. A pox on those forcing people into poor choices.

I grew up in Nebraska and South Dakota where plugging your car in at night is normal, just to keep the oil from thickening too much. The further north you go the more obvious. Motels with electric sockets outside the door are the big clue you're in a hostile environment.

Re: "a pox"

Shakespeare! Also a serious hazard among the wokerati who want to tell you how to live, in excruciating detail.

I'm currently doing a study to see if folding my back seat down to carry cargo reduces my miles per gallon by delaying the under seat battery warming to cabin temps.

I get a monthly letter from my utility telling me how my power use compared to my average neighbor, and my most efficient one. ( which I think is the barn across the street on it's own account? Or the shed down the road at the greenhouse. )

Considering I heat with nuclear, hydro, gas & garbage, ( with an infinitesimal boost, occasionally, from solar ) aka local electric, I think I'm doing pretty good, aka cheapskate.

Especially since my average neighbor heats with propane or natural gas.

But I don't have any smart stuff except my heat pump water heater that has it's WI-FI turned off. ( it also dehumidifies and cools my basement. )

Japan is returning to nuclear.

https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/japan-t urns-back-nuclear-power-tackle-energy-crisis-2022- 12-16/

I hope they jump into improved designs like pebble bed, Thorium salt, and fail safe modular reactors.

The big money maker in the 21st century may be used reactor fuel recycling and recovery. The "bad stuff" with short half lives might be the most valuable.

The unrealistic body expectation problem, Barbie dolls, whey protein ads, models, actors, etc. has been a problem for both sexes for decades. And I'll give the bulk of the problem to the girls, since school girls are incredibly cruel monsters to each other.

But somehow we in the U.S. where obesity is a poverty normal, skipped right past rational acceptance of human variation and zig zagged right to circus side show.

It'd be silly to pick on tattoos on a biker website, they've been part of the counter culture for at least since WW1. So just chalk me up as staightlaced and old when it comes to ink on people's faces and I guess it's a good thing that taboo has left the building.

But I'm a guy who's battled overweight issues since high school, and my circle of friends has shrunk over the years, and without modern drugs, I doubt I'd have any obese friends left. Believe me, I understand how hard it is to control weight problems. ( I've got 20 pounds to get rid of from Last year's thanksgiving through winter weight gain, but that's on me, not going to blame domestic circumstances )

And "fat shaming" is seriously mean girls crap. But when you see the insanity of a 400 pound person insist they're healthy? Uh, no. They're a ticking time bomb, and an ambulance worker's future back injury.

And blaming racism? If there's some lingering remnant of an African tribal custom that prefers women who can survive a famine, it's got to be a recent import by commies who aren't happy enough with Planned Parenthood genocidal programs.

And as a history buff, not to mention old, I'm well aware that the Brits, too, ( and Dutch & German & French & ...) used to prefer wives that had enough reserves to last through late winter & spring until the early crops came in.

And beauty standards change. Marilyn Monroe was the peak in my youth, and is now considered dumpy.

But there has to be some rational middle ground between acceptance of individuality and suicidal trends.

Sarcastic twit.

The food pyramid? Aka how to get diabetes.

There may be few better examples of why "the science is settled" is a pernicious lie.

Pretty sure the Food Pyramid wasn't an intentional ploy to make children sick. ( if it was, there should be public executions ) But it's certainly a case where looking at the results of a theory prove it Wrong.

Which is how the Scientific Method Works.

Rolling blackouts and constant tv ads for diabetes drugs are both the visible proof that policy makers follow wrong theories.

Bureaucratic CYA and Denial are understandable, not good, but understandable. When it rises to the obvious "I don't care how many people die, I'm never going to admit I was wrong" it's gone through to actual evil, and horribly ironically to terror tactics to shut up the tellers of truth.

News organizations that now refuse to allow anyone who disagrees with the cult to have any voice in public.

It's going to get worse.
