My dad is dead.
Fortunately, I am indestructible, faster than lightning and am going to live forever,

Please raise a glass to absent friends.

Sorry for your loss. My father has dementia, and can't remember anything new for more than ten minutes, but I still have him.

Don,

Sorry to see you return under such sad circumstances.

Like Johndb my dad has dementia - although not quite that bad. The 2-3 times a year that I get to visit he always remembers who I am - I think... Sometimes it's both amazing what slips and what they remember.

Please raise a glass to absent friends.

Doing just that in honor of your dad as well as you dropping by!

there are really no words to describe each circumstance of the path each of us walks. my dad got sick in 86 and passed in 88. binswangers they called it . stroke like symptoms, pt and he would recover the use of left side functions. each occurence would be a little worse. my kids were small and not only watching dad slip away slowly but they had questions for which I had no answers. that my friends is the most humbling experiences a man can have, I think. brother didn't accept it at all and due to some reason , he left out. haven't seen him since 1990. all is well there tho. I wish you the best and please , enjoy each day and your loved ones the best that is possible. If parents that are still alive and functioning, enjoy them to the fullest!

Thank you all so very much. I have no one to talk to or to help me, so it means a lot.

FYI, he was a veteran, and I am working hard for full military honours at his burial. The Patriot Guard has kindly assured me of an escort to his final rest.

Sorry for your loss. Will raise a glass tonight for you. Like John and 1313 my Dad has dementia and I fear will not be with us for too much longer. I've been trying to spend as much time as I can with him. His short term memory is shot, but his long term memory is fantastic and he repeats the same old stories over and over again. I don't mind, love hearing them.

Sorry for your loss.

Loss is tough so talk as much as you can, write it out, or whatever you need to work through it.

Take care.

Glass will be raised in his honor tonight. Peace be with you and your family.

My dad would have been 101 last week if he was still here. He has been gone 24 years. I have a few of his tools in my shop, like his bench grinder. It is cool to have it here because not only was I with him when he bought it when I was like six years old, but I get to be reminded of him and thank him every time I use it.

Oz, my condolences. My dad died way too young at 57, way back in 1989. Mom passed about 6 years ago this coming November, less than a week before Thanksgiving. The damndest thing about Thanksgiving that year was she had already started cooking and putting things in the freezer- tasting her stuffing, smelling the sage, without her there was surreal, and very tough.

May God's grace and all the peace be with you, friend.

Oz,
I still miss my old man. When he died I took great comfort in the kind words of my fellow BadWebbers, for that I am forever grateful.
I remembered part of a quote but could not remember the whole thing or where it came from.
Queen Pammy found it for me as did others, one even found it on a wall in an airport (I think).
If your Dad was anything like mine it may help you too.

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in one pretty and well preserved body; but rather the intention should be to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and defiantly shouting, "Wow! What a ride!""

Hang in there Don, it does get better but it never goes away.

Brad

So sorry to hear that Oz. I can tell you from experience that there will be things you will experience and for a split second you will think about sharing it with you Dad and then you will quickly realize he's no longer here. It took a few months before that quit happening and time does make it better but you'll always miss him.

I took a long trip with some friends after his death which really helped me cope with it. Knowing that with God's grace that someday I will see him again makes it much easer.

Hang in there.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I still have my Dad, and visited him just this past week. He has severe brain damage from multiple accidents, some from Run For The Wall in '07, and some from when he totaled his car this last year. I'm trying to find a way to get him moved up here in Colorado with us so he can have a better chance at rehabilitation/restoration than the sedentary, isolated situation he's in now.

Losing someone close to you is much like losing a limb. You'll never be the same, but you can learn to still do great things without it.

Beer is good - especially if you got to tip a few with the old man. I've got lots of great examples, like late night checkers eating planters cheese puffs and drinking amber bock, along with knocking back a few after skating the frozen river by his home, and, and, ...

Here's to hoping that the pain of losing your beloved old man gives way to the wonderful memories you have of the times you were able to share with the same beloved old man sooner rather than later.

I lost my dad 2 years ago Sept 23.

I was fortunate to have been able to spend the 2013 West Virginia Buell Rally with him a few, short weeks prior to his passing. We were extremely close. Every once in a while, I'll hear a song, or see 'his' bike (it was stolen Halloween 2014), or he'll just pop up into my thoughts, and it was like it happened yesterday.

The pain sucks. Hard.

Thank you all again for the kind words, encouragement and understanding. I have to get through this for my mom. When she passes, I will be the last of our family.

I live alone, I eat alone, I sleep alone, I drink alone, I ride alone and when my time comes, I will die alone.

Mine passed when I was 19 of a heart attack. He was a raging A-hole at times but was a wise, hardworking and brilliant man. My mother passed a few years ago. She was quite a character. She was crass, hard headed, and often bluntly outspoken, but everyone knew and loved her. She passed a few years ago after a long fight with cancer.

I have the worst personality traits of both but make it work. I miss them but they are always with us.

About age 25 or 28 I started telling my pop he wasn't the dumbest bastard on Earth but he smartest.
In fact,every year,he seemed a little smarter.

He's the smartest man I've ever known.
