It was in Utah. Hate to say it but it's a different culture.

In CA, the car would have been almost completely dismantled within 2 minutes and the crowd would have been taking their pictures in front of the fire for posting on youtube.

I saw that on the news this morning but they only showed the crowd lifting it and the rider being pulled out. At 21 secs. in the guy in the suit is just nonchalantly leaning up against the car, heck even a lady in what looks to be a mini skirt was helping out. I'd be embarrassed if I were the suit. Alls well that ends well though I guess, the guy was in stable condition at the hospital after surgery. Needs some gear though.

I guess it's all in where you're from. They are heroes but around here thats the expected norm, you help those in need.

That looks like a Buell front wheel, but I don't see the brake rotor.

Police said the BMW pulled out of a parking lot and in front of the motorcyclist. Curtis said the motorcyclist tried to avoid the car, which resulted in him laying the motorcycle down.

How much ya wanna bet that, now that police are trying to recognize the heros in the video, the man in the suit is the only one to come forward?

Glad it ended reasonably well but i'm thinking this is another reason its best NOT to lay the bike down if contact seems inevitable. Another report says that it appears the bike layed down before impact. That is, of course, IF the rider layed it down intentionally

The man Curtis believes to be the driver appears in the video dressed in a dark suit. He stood a little off to the side from the group and did not help lift the car, the video shows. After Wright is pulled from underneath the vehicle, the man in the suit walks over to look at the motorcyclist.
"He was in a shock," Curtis said about the driver, adding that any possible charges related to the traffic accident are pending.

I saw this online and on the local news last night while I was at work. My cousin is a nurse at the hospital the man was transported to, if she was on she helped out as she's in the trauma unit.

This morning the reporters on one channel told it like this " A motorcycle crashed into a car and the rider was pinned under the two burning vehicles..."

It really galls me the way it is almost always told in a way that makes it sound like the rider was at fault. The driver pulled out in front of a bike and the rider was nearly killed because of the car drivers poor observation and improper look-out.

People doing what people should, I see it that way too... which is not to say that these people didn't act heroically, I think they did. There are a lot of good people in this world, not just Utah, trouble is people loose faith in that and start being scared to help one another. But, as Slaughter said, we do have a different culture here.

Local story regarding the "psychology of heroes" directly related to this incident:

http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=17236902

And the family of the motorcyclist thanks those who saved him, this is a great article IMO:

http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=17226344

As a former MSF instructor I'll say it's always better to keep the bike upright. Rubber has much better traction than metal or plastic parts.

I wondered about the bike too, definitely not a Buell, dual rotors up front and looks like shaft drive too.

After watching a few times to see what the dude in the suit was up to... beats me, seems like a bit of a tool, especially with everyone jumping in to help. The initial report said the driver was also injured, so I tend to think that he wasn't the driver.

I lived in Utah for 5 years. There's really good people there.

This kind of action from Utahns don't surprise me a bit. We could all do well to learn from the people in this state.

Reports today suggested the guy standing by was the driver, on of the guys who lifted the car actually defended him, saying he was in shock, believing he had just killed the rider.

I'll see if I can find more links.

When I was hit by a left turning driver (24 year old who was incredibly careless), she wouldn't even get out of the car.

I had to ask one of the people that *did* stop to help, to please go over there and tell her that I am hurt, and I am NOT happy, but I'm probably not going to die. (They didn't... they saw the whole thing, and I think they were less sympathetic then I was).

You could tell from the video that guy was in shock. It would be a lot to be dealing with.

I wish people could feel the pain of careless driving *before* it all goes horribly wrong.

It can happen so fast. Who here has not had a 'near miss'? I had one the other day and it was ENTIRELY my fault. Just being stupid... complacent.

The mc driver may have saved himself from a serious or fatal head injury.

I am glad he will be ok. Hopefully the car driver will be charged and learn a lesson, but probably not.

I agree. And I for sure won't judge somebody for stumbling around stunned who was in that situation. He had just screwed up and driven his car over a person, and that person was still under the car. Who knows how a person would react in that circumstance.

The annoyance I have with the person that clobbered me is that they weren't just careless, they were in a situation where they had just about NO possible way to see if the path was clear or not, and their response was just to "go for it". So I'm mad about their decision more than I am mad about their mistake... if that makes any sense.

Who knows how a person would react in that circumstance.

i can honestly say i know how i would react, because i have.

i hit a kid(i call him that because he is more a kid mentally, physically hes probably 300pnds and 6ft) years ago out on the highway with my car, him on a bicycle. he came out of a driveway right in front of me. i mean this kid was known for literally walking into the side of cars that were stopped at stop signs and such because he always had big head phones on, stared at the ground and never paid attention.

anyway, i hit him with my car, ran over the bicycle but he came up on the hood, against the windshield, around the side taking off the mirror and busting out the passenger window then flying off into a deep ditch.

my brakes were locked up and the car was still moving when i jammed it in park and bailed out of the car to run back and check on that kid. i was sure he was dead. it wasnt like i hit him at 10 mph, i was on the damn highway!

anyway, first thing i noticed when i dove into the ditch was that he was alive and moving. mostly complaining about his leg.

all he ended up with was some cuts and bruises, he got very lucky.

everyone said it was bound to happen, i just ended up being the one that had to hit him.

also when i was in highschool a friend and i were in his firebird when a little kid in a diaper ran out in the street and he hit him(probably about 20-25 mph) we looked at each other for a second then jumped out of the car only to find the kid screaming and stuck under the crossmember. the sister who SHOULD have been watching the kid is screaming at us to do something.

we both grabbed a wheel opening and pulled up as hard as we could. i honestly dont know if the wheels came off the ground or not, but it sure seemed like we moved it a ways. either way it was enough for her to pull the boy out from under the car. he ended up being mostly ok after the ambulance showed up.

while picking up the frontend of the car we managed to wrinkle both front fenders where we were holding on. not that those late 80's early 90's firebirds were built to well anyway...

in other words, i'll be damned if im going to stand there and watch.

One day a boyfriend of mine was making a left hand turn on a busy street with a bicyclist trying to race him through the intersection. The guy acutally ran a red light and charged us while we were moving around 20 mph with a green arrow and he was flying down the hill around 30 mph.

My boyfriend was completely freaked... as Norice said, we thought he might have been dead bc he had no helmet on or anything. We immediately parked the car in a safe spot and both ran out of the car to see if he was ok and to try to call an ambulance (this was before everyone had a cell phone).

Dude said, "I thought I could beat you (through the intersection). I am fine and please do not call the EMS." Now that I think about it he was probably high as a kite and totally reckless. I myself cannot understand not trying to help and do something.

Some people are just cowards and idiots.

I would hope...
No matter where I was...
That folks would help me if I was that dude!

I would totally donate every ounce of my grit on lifting that car off the dude.

Got Grit?
