I would imagine a diesel pickup would be the best. If it's modern, the alternator's diode pack and regulator would die in an EMP.

i don't think any modern diesel would run. pcm controls injectors with cam & crank sensors. at least on our cummins

Yeah it would have to be pre-1990.
Smaller would be better too I would think.
Perhaps an old Diesel Rabbit?

my bro-n-law just bought an old army "duece". really cool thing is it will run on used engine oil, diesel fuel or vegetable oil. the injector pump auto senses it somehow. neet stuff

Wouldn't electric be back to normal in a year or sooner. Other devices would also be back after they were repaired. And other countries would help. Unless,.. there was some invasion on our land during the first months of the emp and/or a bunch of other emp were lit all over the world, and there were a bunch of other terrorist instances that kept happening during the rebuilding.

Then..., it would just take alittle longer.

I'll bet the first emp device used in a "terrorist" setting will be ground level at the IRS. That will be typical of bozo domestic idiot types, as the files will be backed up, and all it means is they raise taxes to pay for the dead hardware, and can delay our getting our overpayments back indefinitely.

Most commercial airliners would be toast in a large scale sub orbital EMP attack. The fuel injection boxes, radios, glass cockpit, air systems, all aren't what I'd call hardened. A DC-3 might not notice. It's got magentos.

The TV series "Dark Angel" was set in a post terrorist emp attack great depression. Jessica Alba in a James Cameron show. Hot!

I live on the coast. To the nearest marina with my prybar, wirecutters and the largest bag of 22lr and artillery I can carry. Steal a 25+ footer (sail) and reteach my self to sail (been 30 yrs or so). Land will be full of numb nuts trying to go 'somewhere'. Get seasick, but I'll get over it. Oh, and I do have three two wheelers that still run on points and condensors (or at least could be swapped back, I do have the bits and pieces).

I'm with Tilt on the boat thing. I'd make my way to the nearest marina (about 10 minutes from my house). I'd steal the biggest sailboat I could find. After that, I'd make my way south. There are plenty of hiding places in Central and South America. And with a better climate, you could grow fruits and vegetables throughout the year.

Oh yeah...need a solar panel for listening to Buffet music on the beach : )

That depends. Is it a Zombie Apocalypse with no owners left? Then it's salvage.

If it's a Soviet Emp strike, then, yeah, it's theft. Bad, boat stealers, bad!

( I'll be waving as you leave.....can I have your stuff? )

I promise to return your boat, in better condition than I found it, with upgrades. Just contact me via ham radio when the zombies have all passed from starvation. 17:00 hours EST daily. Yes, I am sure there will be zombies.

If you think the lights are going out join the Mennonites. No problem.
But then they believe in non-violence so that may not last long.

In response to the OP Where will you go when the lights go out?

Most likely, if that were to occur, my wife & children would be sent to our “off the grid” place while I remain behind.

I remain behind because it’s my duty to help my neighbors, friends & community to help restore & maintain order. That’s what citizens do. Once that's done, the wife & kids come back.

In the event of a full on zombie invasion though, we’re all outta here until the coast is clear.
