I don't have any gunsBUT if I did I'd take them and my family out to my wife's home place. 10K sq. ft. of pre-civil war house on 140 acres with about 100 head of cattle, a well, pond and enough wood for winter. We've been thinking about homeschooling anyway. This would help us make up our mind.

just finished "one second after" great probable scenario.
if you're more into hard core survival with heavy tactical preparedness read "patriots" i had wood through the whole book!
needless to say i've been thinking about this for awhile. every time i hit the store i'm buying some x-tra stuff..canned food, t.p., med supplies etc. (not to mention the guns & ammo!)i would try & stick it out at my place until i realized it might last more than three months. in that case i'm grabbing the remaining food/guns/supplies/etc & heading to a buddys house thats a bit further out from the populace.
in a real shtf scenario the cops & military will go to their families and it would be madness. the animals would be hunted and eatin in a month or two.

gee do i feel paranoid!

As I said on my census form, I'm a Mutt.

"Lucifer's Hammer" is excellent. Also, "Footfall" by Pournelle & Niven, alien invasion with the best ever human built weapon. The Orion Drive ship. ( also excellent on Zombies, but hard on real estate )

Take a scenario that has a real chance of happening, say a single nuclear blast on a city, terrorist or nation state, is more probable now than mass nuclear annihilation.

If you're in the blast zone, house burnt & flattened, your worries are over, so lets say you live on Long Island & NYC gets hit. ( for the west coasties, you're in Sacramento or Riverside, and 'Frisco or Long Beach get's hit )

The roads become a hostile insane parking lot. You Can't escape by car. Maybe a Uly could make it through, but you're basically stuck where you are while fallout falls. The trick is you have a short time to get under cover, shovel dirt over basement windows, seal up a shelter, and then have to hang for long enough for the radiation to drop to levels safe enough to run away. Figure 2 weeks in the basement. No power, no water. Tyvek painting outfits sealed with duct tape, dust masks, you can hit the road, roll through the massive dead zone and get out to safer places. It's a survivable situation, taking a little planning and a knowledge of the likely hazards.

My standard response to the typical comment "If there's nuclear war I don't want to live" is "can I have your stuff? Please buy a big Ford Diesel 4x4 and leave the keys where I can find them, ok?"

Now other disasters not involving radiation, poisonous gases or zombies, are fairly common and statistically inevitable. But the freeways becoming a hostile parking lot problem apply to many of them. So either run away early, I mean move away from large population areas, or be prepared to hang locally until stuff stabilizes.

i live on an old dairy farm(good, currently inactive, bad), unfortunately it's only 50 miles due north of NYC. there would be millions of "unfriendlys" heading north into "our" mountains, just not enough ammo...plenty of food while the ammo lasts though...

You guys know that cars wont work anymore right? Airburst Gamma Rad EMP will send 100 if not 1000s of volts through everything so quickly that overloads and fuses cannot react fast enough. You need about 6 feet of concrete and lead to protect from that. Not trying to be a buzzz kill or anything.

Your friendly USAF SAC Aircrew guy.

Here is some light reading for you guys. Take note of the date. Since then weapons have improved a little : ) you can easily double or triple the radius.

Table 2 page 16 spells it out in 1979 terms. Its not pretty but the numbers are on the low side of todays weapons. The whole suvivor idea WOLVERINES!!!!!!!! might be possible if you live in a very isolated area.

And I'm guessing that .22 rimfire will end up the new coin of the realm, I should bury a few ammo cans of that somewhere.

You guys know that cars wont work anymore right?

Cars and boats and planes, trafficlights, anyone being kept alive by machines would die. Bullets would be hand/manual machine made(?) No oil refineries. No hospital equipment.... etc. etc. But we would just need the electrical parts to rebuild/build new equipment and vehicles or repair the existing. Getting parts from an area that wasn't effected or build new parts using equipment that also wasn't effected. No biggie. It would be done.

What would be a good toilet paper replacement?

Reading material like the Sears&Roebuck catalog used to be outhouse norm...........should still work.

I always thought the Yellow pages had a softer texture.

Mike its a non issue for us. NJ, NY, DE, MD, VA & East PA wont be here anymore. Now if youre from Pennsyltuckey you might be better off.

Some planes will be operational. If they got the blast curtains pullled and the goggles out they might even be able to see. Thats what we do. Air Refueling came into its prime as a leg of the Nuke Triad. Nuke bombers, the fast movers, and the tankers with a long 1 way trip.

I wonder if it would be an airburst though. A terrorist attack could likely be a ground detonation, or just dirty bomb. Airburst would bring plan B into play. I would have to play defense in the western burbs for a while. Still plenty of liberals to feed me though.

Glitch has the right idea, I'd go home.
I don't have any guns but if my neighbors turned into flesh eating ghouls I'd go up on the roof and drop big rocks on their heads. I'm pretty sure that they would not care for that.

An emp attack would be fairly apocalyptic. Not as much as full scale "toe to toe with the Ruskies" nuclear war back in the 60's-90's mode would have been, but certainly a lot of people would die. I'd think that type of attack more likely from Russia than Iran, or AQ. Don't you think?

Divide disasters into 4 categories & responses.

1. Got to GO! things like Floods, volcano's, industrial & war events.

2. Got to get under cover things like Blizzards, Fallout, Emp strike & plague.

3. Got to fight things like war, revolutions, terrorism and criminal gangs.

4. Got to pick up things like tornado's, and the aftermath of all the above.

For #1. things, you should know your options to run, make sensible plans, and have a case of water, first aid kit etc.
Consider a mountain bike in the car as a second stage, when the car can't keep going and you have to.
A good "run away!!-Run away!!" bag with backpack straps that fits in the trunk, and lives there, is a very good idea, I really should assemble one.

But in "the lights go out" scenario, I'd hang and probably be part of the recovery effort. A Citizen gets up and helps.
Depends on if work calls me in as vital for keeping civilization running, & I know there are plans in place for that. Get a Zombie for me. See ya on the barricades.

Cars using the old points and condenser ignition system or a magneto would work just fine.

Some things to consider

Composting toilet.... check
Kick start Dirt bike ... check (it aint street legal, but I think the cops will have bigger fish to fry)
Remote cabin,
Prepositioned Food, Water, Water purification measures, ammo, blankets, fuel for fire, hand crank generator,
check, check , checkity check
22 is fine for close in, but for stopping at a distance, I prefer a bigger round, I would rather have one well placed slug than to need six.

You may depend on community... I am counting on them to be disorganized, unprepared, untrained and generally not an asset to survival. Now if I were with my old units, that is a different story entirely. Joe Surburban.... um really, theres a reason the cabin doesnt have an address.

"You need about 6 feet of concrete and lead to protect from that"

EMP can be blocked by a Faraday cage. Military aircraft are hardened against it. I would imagine commercial passenger planes are as well.

Fuses don't help. The voltage is excited inductively along every single conductor, including the little wires connecting the chip to the contacts on its ceramic carrier. Unprotected devices will be toast.

Your old points style distributor will be unaffected. You do still have an old points type distributor don't you? Right next to your cache of ammo and guns right?
