Today Apple has finally announced the release of their highly rumored tablet device, the iPad. Looks pretty sweet.

Anyone else excited about this?

I think it's neat. I'm not going to buy one any time soon. If I needed an ebook, excuse me "iBook" reader and a new laptop, and wanted to have another monthly cellular bill, then maybe I'd be interested.

No, beyond giving them the nod for bringing to market yet another stunningly beautiful and functional product, I give it a yawn.

iPad?

So, when exactly did Apple get into feminine hygiene products?

I love my iPad, and I have had it since 2007.

Ok it isn't as big as the iPad, but it is nice and fits in my pocket. The screen alone is larger than an iPhone and its high resolution screen makes browsing the web easy.

this thing seems too large to be transportable easily.

With the shares rising $1.32 and Apple's announcement of record profits yesterday . . I'm sure they'll be subject to the new "success tax".

iPad is not my style . . but if it's anything like the iMac and iPhone it's incredibly well designed and built.

Is the iPad a cell phone as well? I mean with a BlueTooth ear piece, might be an interesting product line. Maybe VoIP? Video conferencing?

Will it run apps like professional Photoshop?

Hex, its not a phone, but there's a wifi and 3g version. Seems like it runs the same apps as the iPhone.

I don't know but I don't see it. I mean why would I actually need this?

Are they trying to replace the laptop?

No USB ports so you can't use a external CD/DVD drive on it. At least you would possibly be able to use the bluetooth for printing and a physical keyboard, which is what I do with my Nokia.

I see they have an adapter for mini USB Camera's, that is a major letdown if it won't work with any USB device.

Still, I am not sure what its trying to replace in my lineup, as its too big to be carried on my person like my phone and Nokia tablet, and it dosen't seem practical for home use when I already have laptops and desktops (no touch screen though).

I have used Windows Tablets a few years back when they first came out, they were nice, but served no real purpose. My handwriting is horrible, I can't read it yet alone a computer so that feature would never work for me.

No they are trying to replace the Kindle.

I'm sure it is well made. It's not a laptop nor is it trying to be.

If you look at it as a book reader, with the ability to cruise the net, it makes a lot of sense.

It is a hundred times nicer than the small Kindle, and no more expensive than the much more limited Big Kindle.

As for myself, with an iPhone, a apple Laptop, and an Apple workstation, I don't see when I would use it.

<yawn>

It's an over grown iPod touch.
In Typical Apple fashion. too much flash not enough function.

You still can only get apps through the app store.(More lockdown crap)

It's intended for reading BadWeb in the crapper without the eyestrain of the iPhone/iPod.

Funny you mention that, Jonny5... Lol. I don't have too much eyestrain with my iPhone though. I guess I'll test and see how well the accelerometers in my iPhone work when it's in the RAM mount. Only my tach works anymore, and I'm planning to get a Sportvue HUD unit to put on my helmet, so I may be interested in replacing my dash for a docking station with charging line for one of these... GPS would be a lot easier to read on the fly : D. I can think of a few other uses too. I go to a Spanish church (hablo Español también), and I have a bible app that has Spanish and English side-by-side. It would sure be a lot easier to read on a 10" screen than a 5" screen. Movies would be easier to watch as well.

Oh yay, I'm so excited for a giant iPod Touch!

Or a giant iPhone if you get the S. SO EXCITING.

/sarcasm

This shit is stupid, and isn't even worth half of what they are charging.

So far, the only iPhone I paid dearly for was the first one, iPhone (2G) 8GB @$400. The others I got fairly cheap. $82 for the 8GB 3G after selling the 2G. Then $84 for the 32GB 3GS after selling the 3G. Most of the other options out there are nearly as pricey as the iPhone anyway. The iPhone just has better support and backing, as well as most of the interface, than the competitors.

Darn, and I just bought my son an iPod Touch. But that may not be working out too well for him 'cause he's visually impaired and the Accessibility function seems kinda problematic at times. I'm sure he could always use a bigger screen with its bigger virtual keyboard. Oh well, we'll just have to check it out and see... (no pun intended)

I'm completely over mobile apps and the stupid monthly charges they require. Fun for a short while, but ultimately too gimicky. I've decided I don't need it, or ever want it anymore.

It needs the zip drive accesses, and the external ports. It also needs to function without a damn monthly charge for a service. If I want mobile computing, I am probably hot spotting and jacking somebody elses signal.
But if it has pentab hand writing applications, that would be great for cyrillic, that and a data bank of images... like from google. Babble Fish, and a virtual cyrillic keyboard, and I am in. It gets me out of about 400 lbs of dictionaries, and having to pick and choose the best one for the application that I might encounter
