The (lost) Motor Company just announced that sidecar production will end with the 2010 model year, and no further orders will be taken. First they kill Buell, then they turn on their own... Is their end to their insanity?

Fine with me. I could never understand the attraction of the sidecar, on any level. They're ugly, uncomfortable, and crap up the handling of an already marginal machine. Other than the 'geek factor' or, if you're apt to be carrying your dog (wearing the obligatory goggles, of course) to the local bike night, they're really laughable creations which saw their zenith during WWII. Oh, but I forgot, HD's stuck in a time warp, anyway....

Agreed, under normal conditions a solo bike will outperform a hack'd bike. But when your legs won't hold the bike up, you've got a cartful of groceries to haul home, or you've got to ride on ice and snow... A sidecar is the way to go!

If you have a cart full of groceries to haul home, or you're riding on ice and snow...you're taking the car.

Dragonwing,
some people are so passionate about motorcycles, they actually ride them everywhere, for every task, in all sorts of weather. Not just for enjoyment.
I've owned bikes all my life, and there have been quite a few years there, when I didn't have a 4 wheeled vehicle.
I've ridden in snow, and I've hauled all sorts of things home on the back of my bikes.

So, maybe YOUR taking YOUR car, but some of us still choose to have our face in the wind...

In Washington DC the U.S. Park Police and the Metro DC police use side-cars in the winter because the do a lot of escorts. Below is a link of two side-cars for sale.

Ural FTW!

My father-in-law was looking into buying one before he passed away. You think Harley's are slow... Urals get downright dangerous at 65 mph (told to us by an actual dealer). But are they still fun? Hell yeah!

It could be that the Trikes have wiped out the demand for the sidehacks. I didn't quite know how to take the three wheelers when the dealers started pushing them, but have met a few riders with disabilities that would not be able to ride a regular machine.

Somebody needs to put a Trike and a Sidehack on a track to see which one is faster I'd put money on the sidehack.

I have a lo-slung, mid engine trike frame in storage for when I can't hold a bike up anymore.
All tabbed up for a rubber-glide.

Not yet.

Side cars and Harley go way back. While not for me, I know of several guys that started riding them in their golden years. With the Harley market going up in age, side car production makes more sense to Harley than any other motorcycle company. The current management thinks only of the short term bottom line.

The Harley trike, if they are still making it, would be better overall for aging riders, IMHO, that the HD sidecar. The trike is easier to maneuver, takes less footprint, is likely lighter, faster & easier on gas.

Besides the sidecar aftermarket makes rigs with better suspension and more modern looks than the, what, 80+ year old frozen-in-time hack H-D has been offering all these years.
