Well it seems to me this guy came here looking to piss people off in the first place by saying what he did. Not saying I would not be pissed if i took my bike to a shop and it was there for 6 weeks that I would not be pissed when you could rebuild that whole bike in a matter of days but I would not come here and tell everyone that there bikes are junk because of it.

My very first Buell (98 S3) was a complete pile of Sh*t and obviously built on a Friday afternoon. After 9 months in the dealership (during 12 months of ownership)for numerous problems they caved in and gave me a new bike.

I have owned/raced/customised/thrashed pretty much every air cooled Buell model since then and never had any reliability problems at all.

They are never going to be perfect (nothing in life is) and you will always find a few bad apples in the barrel, but stick with it and I'm sure you'll start to see a much better side to your bike : )

Hey. Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings. The bike is under warranty still. So I'm not going to work on it myself, besides oil, brakes, etc. So far it was supposedly push rods, then valves, cams, oil pump. Oh yeah ignition went bad after month 3 of ownership. Rear cylinder cooling fan after a year. So I don't know what to say. I'm glad most have had great luck with their bikes.
I quit getting on here b/c all the smart asses. Most of you are very helpful and I appreciate that.
The shop is getting me a new motor now and should be ready by next week. We'll see how it goes. I ride the piss out of that bike and enjoy it. Hopefully I will be forced to recant on calling it junk and just say it was a friday bike.

Im a smart ass too, but you should have said "Harley sucks monkey balls and they dont know shit about fixing Buells!" thats whats going on,. if they did not fix it right the first time it will continue to have problems untill its done right. Simple!!!!!!! Next time take out your anger on them!

My POS Buell has had all sorts of problems....the tires wore out...the brakes wore out....the seat didn't fit my backside properly....it was too tall....the muffler was too quiet....the rear footpegs got in the away....the mirrors looked goofy....the spark plugs wore out...the primary needs adjusting...the clutch is goofy....I got a scratch on my filter cover....an endless list of wrong things.

Wait a minute....

Nevermind.....I'm going to go work on my ecm mapping, adjust the clutch, change the primary oil, fine tune the suspension some more.....and buff out the scratch.

Seriously...it looks like a lot of you guys never owned a 1960's or 1970's motorcycle....I used to work on my junk all week just so I could ride over the weekend....and most of the parts wore out very quickly...most bikes were worn out and done well before 20K miles....worst of all were bike with Lucas (the Lord of Darkness) or MotoSpat electrics...crap is very reliable today by yesteryear's standards...If my 441 had to come home in a truck, it was a victory that it made it as far as it did... I am so old school that when I look at a new bike, I can't help but muse over what parts would need replacing and what parts I would keep...

The Brits understand this and have founded a whole culture on customizing their bikes...nothing from a factory is perfect...nobody builds their junk just for you...(unless you are Jay Leno)...

I'm touched.........Really? Did you read the post gramps? I'm talking about a bike only a year and a half old that had just under 15000 miles that needed all that. Not talking about a BSA or an old Flathead.

Yeah, I ride occasionally with "gramps". He hung the first item on the tree of shame at Deal's Gap.

He's still a WERA level rider.

I love seeing the sly grin when the "yutes" start the jawbone.

Walk in and take a crap in the middle of the living room, and I don't have much time or sympathy to help you. Escalate the pile of crap to a larger one, and you get asked to leave the living room.

So what was happening that lead to the dealer throwing various engine parts at it looking for a cure, ending with them throwing an entire engine at it? It would almost have to be bad crank bearings for a whole new engine at this point. A qualified mechanic should be able to tell the difference between a bottom end problem and valve train problems.

Sorry to hear of the problems you have had, but it can happen to any make/model. Sounds like your dealer has really dropped the ball though. I have no doubt that when fixed you bike will be able to make someone happy. It could be you if you give it a chance. You may have to find a better dealer though. That really always has been the weak point of Buells.

Yup, attitude is everything. I would have a similar attitude if that happened to my 08. But trying to put that aside when asking for help on this forum is key. We all love helping, but also love bashing the bad attitude when it comes up! Take it easy!

By the way, noticed in your profile that the brand oil you are using could cause significant issues! In college, we only bought that beer cuz it was the cheapest and the bottles had value if you could keep your buddies from breaking them or throwing them away!

Shaeffer is an excellent oil, some say its the best and won't cause any issues as many racers use it.

Hey Fast, your post above was great. I've been griping because I don't have much time lately, and my Beemer keeps having stupid things happen and I had to wait a couple of weeks for a muffler strap on my XB... I'd pretty much decided to clean house and get rid of them both and start over. Truth is though, they are both great bikes - the Beemer has some quirks but if I learned to work on some of the more time-consuming stuff, why would I care? The thing will run for another 200K miles plus with no worries. As for the Buell, is it a big deal to wait for a couple weeks? Actually, if it wasn't under warranty I probably would have made a strap and had it back on the road the next day. Every time I ride it I laugh my ass off. And I realize a lot of guys don't have two bikes in the garage, so I really should be thanking my lucky stars rather than whining like school girl.

I'm probably older than most of these guys too, but maybe I've let myself get sucked in by our disposable culture a little too much.

Anyway, I'll be rethinking my situation tonight because of what you wrote. Thanks for the kick in ass, even if you didn't do it on purpose.

Thanks Todd...if we ever meet, the beer's on me.

I'll admit I have a different perspective about a lot of things...I have been a mechanic all my life....so "broken" is the norm for me....and I ride really hard and push things to the limit, so I break a lot of parts.

I have a sign in my shop that says "the road to power is paved with broken parts"...When I was dragracing, myself and my partner bought nitrous in the economy 150 pound cylinder and crossfilled our 3 pound bottles...

My last dragbike started out as a 1973 KZ900...when I sold the bike last year the only remaining original parts were the forks, front half of the frame and the fuel tank. The cases, crank, transmission, clutch, head and cylinder were aftermarket as were the body parts and wheels....it has nearly 2K in electronics...the only other stock parts were the brakes discs which were GSXR with 6 pot Brembos. (the thing would run 170+ and needed some really good brakes on some of the little outlaw tracks I ran at)..

And one would think that a 2K aftermarket head would be a bolt on deal...wrong! all racing parts have to be fitted to make them work...

So my perspective is different....and it takes a certain amount of patience to spend countless hours working on something and use it up in the equivalent of 20 miles....just to start over again. Things do not break....they identify their weakness...you build it stronger next time. You watch it closer, you learn it's habits.

Machinery is a continuing evolution...it wears out...you either patch it, improve it, or toss it aside and start over with a different bike expecting a different outcome.

Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results.

The only way a bike is ever 100 percent reliable is if it sits on display and is never ridden....

Coming from a racing/mechanic/build all my own crap life I truly understand your words, well said!

I had a guy once tell me...you want a purebred, buy a jap bike. You want a mutt that needs constant attention, buy a harley.

I can sympathize with the fan issue, as mine blew out in about the same amount of time. My 2nd one has been rattling for many months (a year maybe?), so I expect it to die at any moment as well. I think I may build a "block" of PC fans to replace it....

The only other issue that's bothered me has been the spluttering that seems to be "the nature of the beast". Cleared some of it up with the breather hose reroute, but still, I find the fueling to be pretty rough around the edges on these XBs. Funny to me that they always marketed them as the ultimate street bike (as in non-race), and yet the engine only runs smooth when you have it totally wound out.
