I have just returned to my condo to grab the keys to my Bronco, which will be providing fuel in the form of a gas can for the '08 XB12Ss that is parked a few blocks away, having run out of fuel. Doh! Definitely need to do something about the horrendous mileage on this vehicle.

My '08 XB12XT had pretty poor mileage for the first 3,000 miles (mid-high 30's). Then after 3,000 miles it has ranged from mid 40's to low 50's.

My experience harkens the advice to be patient,

Filling up the Buell with a 5 gallon fuel can on a major downtown street in Vancouver, BC was not fun in the rain yesterday evening. My left arm is also in a cast, but fortunately a buddy of mine showed up to help me pour the fuel!

In any case, advertising 48-65 mpg city/hwy and not coming close to delivering that is a huge problem. I think it's simply because the ECM is tuning the motor far too rich. I'm hopeful that I can verify this once the Batts Racing cable comes in. I don't seem to be getting any better than 30-35 mpg. My riding is mostly at sealevel.

You may want to check w/your dealer,using the V.I.N.they can check for new mapping that may be downloaded.

Has anyone with a 08 had the PCM "reflashed" with a updated map? Does ddi3 allow this?

Richmotor;
I would like an answer to that question also.
My 08 12S is getting in the low 40s with 1K. My 05 9SX got in the mid 50s

My XB9s has a Race ECM and Spec Ops Pipe. Riding hard, I consistently get 52-55 mpg.

I know BMC is working to refine DDFI-3 on the 1125R, sounds like they need to look at the 08 XB's also.

My XB-9 didn't do so well at first, running the mid 30's, but as I rode it more the mileage improved. Now with over 6K on the clock it gets 50 to 55 MPG some time a little more.

How much is gas in Canada these days?

One word

Ethanol

Its dropped the mileage in my truck 20% I still not sure how much it has dropped the mileage in my fire bolt but I have gotten 78mpg before that crap show up and now I cant do any ware near that. Next time you fill up look at the pump and see if it says 10%ethanol.

I have been averaging 62-63mpg commuting to work 21 miles each way,2/3 highway rest city stop and go. I use 89 octane and my customized 2006 XB12ss has 6,265 miles. on the highway run 75mph and I lay my chest on airbox cover and roll my shoulder's in and basically 1/2 of my helmet is above stock windscreen. Remember your upper body sticking up in the airstream creates more drag than the motorcycle.

All these are good points~

(Ethanol) Does mess with Fuel mileage, but it did not mess with my past 4 bikes, only my BUELL, so thats not a reason~

(Remember your upper body sticking up in the airstream creates more drag than the motorcycle) this is also a good point, but laying on the tank is not going to bring my mileage from 30-60??? Plus my Triumph Tiger sat upright also & it used Ethonal gas & cruised at 6000 RPM on the freeway, yet it obtained 45-50MPG.

Buell just announced a new Map, lets see if this works on this issue at all???}

Lots of people posting about their older than '08 Buell's fuel economy. Irrelevant since they're all running the somewhat more proven DDFI-2 system. Anyhow, mine goes in for its 1000 miles service on Thursday. Speaking with the service department, they confirmed that there is a re-flash in order for '08 models with a particular VIN. I'm gonna datalog and copy the current flash before taking it in and then report on the differences between the two (if mine gets it).

Boney95 "XBrfirebolt, Did reflashing your ECM solve your mpg problem?"

I had my bike at the dealer for a different problem than fuel mpg. I just checked my last mileage since the new flash, I got 40 mpg. We do have 10% Ethanol here and it does kill your mileage.

My fuel mileage has improved as the bike gets more miles on it. It has about 3,500 on it now. I couldn't tell you if the new flash helped it as I haven't checked it regularly lately.

Regarding Ethanol:

Here in NY (and I'm pretty sure it's the same anywhere else in the US) gas companies are only allowed to mix up to 10% ethanol in the fuels. Since ethanol is 2/3 as efficient as gasoline, that 10% equates to 6% gasoline... therefore, the gas you are buying is about 96% as efficient as "regular" gasoline. This is not enough to notice or contribute to poor gas mileage on any scale (if you were getting 50 mpg on "regular" you'd be getting 49 mpg with the ethanol mix, so who's to say that 1 mpg isn't the heat, your riding style, etc.).

Therefore, ethanol is not our problem.

I agree.

In Colorado, our fuel has been 10% Ethanol since before I've been old enough to drive, and I've pulled 67mpg highway on my XB9R in stock form, and consistent 50+mpg since modified. Of course, YMMV : )

I got 47 mpg on my '08 Firebolt after my first fill up. But that was after the dealer spent 2 days working on getting it to run right.
Bike has 250 miles on it.

Getting in the 30s on a Buell during "normal" street riding you have a problem.

Very few people are going to the EPA rated mileage. It is done in a lab on a dyno and I am sure the people at Buell tune to get the best possible numbers for that test. There are too many variables in the real world (temp, fuel, riding style, weight, humidity, maintenance etc.) for that tune to work for everybody. I am sure if you filled your tank and were able to keep it in 5th gear at the lowest possible rpm laying on the tank you could do better than the epa rating. Mileage will improve for the first 3k miles or so. From what I read the majority of people here get mid to high 40s.

My situation living in SoCal with an 05 Firebolt goes like this. commuting to work - high 40s summer low 40s winter, weekend ride through the canyons going through a tank or 2 - low 50s, track days - high 30s. Best ever 62 mpg, 55-60 mph in 5th gear riding along the Klamath river for 110 miles.
