A buddy of mine is purchasing an 02 VRod(standard). I have an 08 XB12Ss. Buddy states he's going to beat me off the line, 0-60, 0-100. Im correct right? I don't know much about VRods.

He just might. But wait till the first turn and watch him scrape the chrome off his V-Rod. You'll be accelerating through the turns while he slows to a crawl and tip-toes.

The Buell is a very well balanced sport bike, the V-Rod is a cruiser with good straight line speed.

Ones an apple the other a banana.

It'll be close, real close.

Depends on who is the best drag racer, who weights the most, which bike is better set up.

I would try to get him into the twisties as soon as possible..

As soon as he starts dragging the radiator, he's finished.

If that bothers you too much, get rid of the XB and get something that makes more power. You don't have a drag racer by any means.

Outside of the bar-to-bar circuit, drag racing, or touring, his bike won't work as well as the XB anywhere.

I think you are all nuts. I have yet to be bested by a V-rod on my 9.

Then you raced a bunch of panzy's. I have a 12 and have ridden several Rods. You may have a better chance at beating one in a rolling start. As far as touring??? The Rod wins there also. It can be set up with hard bags,FLH fairing and shield,Radio..... everything at a dealer. They call them tour Rods.

Nah, if he has problems with the Rod then he just needs to bring bigger guns.

Spatten1 ??? It doesn't bother me. I just thought he was wrong. I LOVE my XB. Trade it in for a VRod, no chance in hell.

I Have Blown the socks of a couple of V-rods to date, also on the highway I pull
ed up along side of one at 225 Klms seems that all he had and I slowly pulled away from him there as well...

So I don`t think they have that much top end do they/??..

Plus when I rode em I found them dogs until ya got the revs up..I wd. think say 30 mph each side by side they are somewhat matched but there was a post somewhere on different speeds and the buell was faster pulling away..

I have both and if the rider is equally experience on both it should be very close. But the V-rod may come out ahead in the 1/4 mile just because it's easier to launch.

Top speed is close on both bikes with the V-Rod being a little faster at 140 mph. I have yet to get my XB12Ss to pass the 130 mph mark.

As some have mentioned pick some real world roads with twisites and the Buell will leave the V Rod in the dust. I dragged pegs on both side s of the V-rod trying to keep up with a Buell and it was not a race. Part of it was me forgetting I was not on my Buell.

I rode with a V Rod not too long ago and the dude on it could really ride. He was actually holding some impressive speed through the turns. Of course the roads around here are not real tight. Still I was impressed.

Well I don't know about actual MPH, but on the speedo my 12R has cruised very happily with 130-135mph showing on the speedo. I wasn't topped out either -- this is a stock '07, no performance mods (would like to put on the full race kit).

I can see that it would be easier to "hook-up" the 'rod, since it has a longer wheelbase and weight to keep it planted, where the XB is going to want to lift that front wheel. My experience is that it is usually the rider, not the bike that is the deciding factor.

So, who's the better rider, you or your friend?

...oh, and who's riding the exotic and who's riding the rubcicle. Hey, it's a Buell forum!

You were topped out. Thats all the XB's have.

Its easier for a novice rider to make a V-Rod go fast then a expert rider to make a XB go fast.

I love the V-rods, but I've yet to ride one. I think it'd be great to have one with a custom, higher exhaust and higher pegs (to increase lean angle).

"Well I don't know about actual MPH, but on the speedo my 12R has cruised very happily with 130-135mph showing on the speedo. I wasn't topped out either"

A lot of factors play into this. For one the R has better aerodynamics then the Ss which the original poster is talking about. Second big thing is speedo error of about 6%. So the indicated 135 is actually closer to 127 mph.

Swordsman. They use to make one. It's the Street Rod (discontinued this year). It has 40 degree lean angle vs the Vrod at 32.

I demo'ed a V-Rod in Nags Head Saturday.... I don't think it can beat my 12Scg to 100. I didn't think it was that fast myself. I did however, notice the 9000 RPM Redline!

It would have been nice to really get on it hard, so I must admit i didn't push it to the limit.

Cool bike tho.

Swede, yeah the Street Rod was my favorite, though I wasn't aware of the lean angle. That would definitely work. I hate they discontinued it.... though I'm sure it wouldn't take too much effort to convert your own.

The Streetrod was discontinued in 06. I'm looking at a used one with 1200 miles as we speak.

When you guys talk about a Buell Vs. VR, remember, not all VR's were created equall. Last year HD offered 5 different models and on their web page they gave actual HP ratings. One or two of them was offred with 135hp rating. The others 120. I was just on their now, I don't see HP ratings for the three they offer for 08.

The 08 are all at 120 HP.

Yeah the 9000 RPM rev limit is nice. If you didn't push it you probably didn't really feels its power. It's somewhat of a sleeper below 4000 rpm. They like to Revs up high and make peak power around 8000. When drag racing you rpms will not drop below 7500 so its in the power band the whole way down. Trust me it gets to 100 fast. And the stats show it to be capable of 116 in the quarter stock.

I will be taking mine to the track on Friday if its not raining. So I guess I will find out what a 240 lb guy can do on it.

ive owned a standard v-rod and a streetrod and 5 buells... i dont race, but if i did, i would put my money on the v-rod, with its 9k redline... the only downside to the v-rod, was the required valve setting at every 12k miles.. i did my own work and it was a pita... i rode my bikes daily... you couldnt find a tech who know squat about them either... they may be a bit faster in 16k to 0 depreciation than a buell, but its close... both are fun bikes...

You were topped out. Thats all the XB's have.

I have to disagree here. I have had 147 on the speedometer on the redline in fifth. I would have to say that it is believable that Retrittion's bike still has some top end MPH in it.

My buddy has a Street Rod and we did a roll on starting at about 5 MPH. Even though I wheelied my Ss all the way to the rev limiter in first and partially in second, I still took him - but not by much. It's a close match depending on the skill of the rider. I suspect the Street Rod would win with equal riders. I personally don't have the skills to launch an XB properly without wheelieing.

IF you're able to get a 12R up to redline then you're doing 143mph at 7000rpm. That's just the math of it, unless your gearing is different or you have a drastically different tire diameter.
Aerodynamics will effect your ability to get up to redline. If you have too much drag then you'll need more power to overcome that opposing force and you won't actually reach the rev limit.
Most likely you'll probably fall just shy of 7K but still be able to nudge 140mph on a stock or race kit Firebolt.

The Key is the launch. From a rolling start the Buell has the advantage from the instant torque.

By the way unless the XB12Ss has had it's REV limiter adjusted with ECM SPY it dies at 6800 rpm

I think that low RPM torque makes the launch easier for less skilled riders.

Rickey Gadson launches at 8,000 rpm, focusing on horsepower, not low rpm torque.

For us mortals, it is much easier to launch something at low rpm and feed out the clutch with less precision.

06 streetrods had driveability issues sort of like some of the 08 buells...if the streetrod hasnt been retuned with an SE race tuner or the like, then he might be an easy victim...if it has, lookout!

So I take it the 06 Vrod with the inverted front end were better for handling, Plus not having the 240 rear tire on the back from 07 and up correct?

my streetrod was a nice bike, i guess...no, they didnt have the 240 tire on them...as far as handling, they had a good lean angle, but a buell in the curves it was not...my 02 v-rod was a charm, but the 06 gave me nothing but trouble... the answer to everything in the harley world, it "they all do that"! even the wheels and rotors warped and they did on a lot of other owners bikes..the good news, is that warranty did fix most items...it stumbled when cold and had a power dip in it until i installed a race tuner...after that , it would scream!..i had 5k in custom paint and accessories on the bike and got 9k on a trade for an flht....
