Gentlemen, please give a warm welcome to "Jade".

This little sweetheart is the elusive Jade Green, 2001 HD Dyna Superglide Sport, known to the faithful as the FXDX.

Modifications include S&S 95" kit, cams, oil pump, race clutch, floating rotors, Deuce rear wheel, and a custom 2 into 1 exhaust, to just mention a few of the highlights.

With a hundred horseponies and a hundred foot lbs of torque, it isn't a fast as a twelve, but it is a hoot to ride, and the adjustable suspension is a huge improvement.

I guess you could say it ain't yo' mama's Dyna, that's for doggone sure.

No... you're in too deep to ever get out.

I was wondering where you were going to get Tomaselli ape hangers, actually.

Very nice. I went the comfortable touring (sport touring?) route with mine. I really love it and agree it is the Harley to have. I would like to do some engine work on mine at some point. It runs great, but it is pretty much stock.

Now that is a hard to find part, Danny!

Actually, I consider this bicycle more or less finished.

I only plan to remove the reflectors, paint the fork sliders black, and ride the piss out of her.

Well, I might replace the chrome derby cover, get a fender that fits, and that is IT.

Of course, the Dunflops get replaced, but that is more of a maintenance item than a mod, right?

Ops, I almost forgot the steering damper, but with a frame this flexible, I should have thought that went without saying, know what I mean?

But aside from that, the only thing I am going to buy for lovely Miss Jade is gasoline, and the occasional swig of Mobil 1 Vee Twin oil.

Honestly.

OK, brake pads and maybe a LaPera Silllouette deluxe seat.
Happy now?

Nice looking ride!!

For replacing the Dunflops, the Metzler ME-880's might be a good start. They really improved the handling on my older Dyna.

Or is there some other tire else that works good on the newer Dynas?

When I stop and think about it, I cannot believe the number of Dyna owners that keep putting the Dunlops on simply because they are Harley branded and the dealers recommend them.

There is a ME-880 for the rear that is a little wider than I could use on my '97 Dyna, that one will go on the later Dynas that have the narrower drive belt.

Thanks Jack.

It seems like the Metzler ME 880's are the thing.

This particular bike will take the 160/70 /17 rear tire because of the Deuce 17" rear wheel, which is a lot wider than the original 130. The original owner said that this wheel/tire combo really improved the handling, but of course, I have no way of knowing.

Any other suggestions?

Anyone?

I was wondering how many Dyna Guys there are on this board, especially FXDX riders.

fxd here, have wanted to convert the suspension over to the adjustable showa's for a while. just curious if the fxdx has the same oscillation/weave problem (during "spirited" cornering) as the fxd.
if you put your foot on the rear peg you can drag your knee too! great fun in front of the local squids.

Mike,

I have only ridden "Jade" a few miles so far.

The temperature has been around 30º and the Dunlop 591's on the bike are a few years old.

That being said, I can already tell that the bike handles much, much better than the FXD I just sold, which had new Metzler ME 880's on it.

The FXDX definitely does not do the oscillation/weave thing, that the FXD did, because the suspension is much better damped, (not that that is saying much:-).

In addition the bike has a lot more ground clearance because it starts out higher, and has rather less sag than the FXD, which comes with very soft springs, and practically no damping at all.

I am looking forward to putting new Metzlers on her, and fine tuning the suspension when it warms up a little.

I was thinking about modifying my previous FXD, but it dawned on me that the economical way to upgrade an FXD to the suspension and brakes of the FXDX is simply to sell the FXD and buy and equivalent FXDX.

I did just that: I sold my 2000 FXD for $7350 and bought this built 2001 for $7200!

The reason for this seemingly irrational situation is simply that good handling is not valued very highly by the Harley market as a general rule, and the FXDX was always the least popular Dyna until it was dropped in 2006.

Another strange thing about the Harley market is the huge gap between asking prices and selling prices.

A lot of Harley owners who bought their bikes a few years ago have not come to accept that the normal rules of supply and demand also apply to Harley's and at this point in time, supply exceeds demand.

Go figure!

You got that right, New Guy.

The problem is finding them.

Harley has finally awoken to the inverted fork, but they seem to think they are too sophisticated for the American market, ( probably correctly).

I have been trying unsuccessfully to find out exactly what they are. I have heard Marrzocchi, but not really sure.

'

The are available on the Europe-only XR 1200. I am getting a pair - just as soon as they show up on eBay.

I certainly mean no offense, but it tickles me when H-D tacks on the label "Sport" to any of their products. In my mind, that's like having an old John Deere, throwing on some trim, and calling it "sporty". Lipstick on a pig... or in this case, a hog. A nice piece of machinery for sure, but "sport" never seems appropriate. But that may just be me.

The V-rod is an exception, however. I can definitely see some sport in that.

I totally agree. No offense taken.

"Sport" is perhaps a wee bit of an stretch when describing this motorbike.

However, from the Milwaukee perspective, the Dyna Sport was about as sporting, and as a result, about as unpopular, as they get. The Street Rod had even a shorter career in the Harley show rooms.

On the one hand, I can't for the life of me understand why the Motor Company is so reluctant to make a decently handling motorcycle, especially when they can call on Buell, (Erik had a hand in the design of the original FXR, or so I am told).

On the other hand, I have heard that their best selling model is the Softail, which makes no pretense to sporting aspirations whatsoever.

I guess Oscar Wilde was correct when he observed "In matters of importance, it is style, not substance that counts"

In any event, either one enjoys tootling around on a cruiser or one doesn't.

I was surprised to find out how much fun the newish Dyna's are when I recently bought one quite by chance to fix up and sell.

And compared the the FXD, (and only the FXD), I can see how one might have the temerity to call the FXDX a "Sport" bike.

Of course, I probably would take Lil' Blackie if I were heading out for a track day, know what I mean?

The Dyna Sport was never a Sporty bike in comparison to the FJ, Zx'x or R###, It is however one of the more sporty and aggressive Harleys. It is a 9lb sledgehammer for getting the job done, and running it around the track last year, I was only a few ticks off the clock compared to the Buell. Why? Because I was very familiar and comfortable with it, and I flogged the hell out of it. Great bike, another one that they dont produce any more. And I heard stubbed toes on the XR1200 & that they wont be building that bike. Another mule shot in the head.

Thanks Rice,

That model just about typifies everything that is wrong with the Motor Company, at least from this old Buelligan's point of view.

gg

All show and not too much go, - and it cost about the same as a nicely matched pair of Buell 1125R's.

First of all, while it is true that this $25,000 chrome farm has inverted forks, they are lowered, and I don't believe that they are adjustable.

While the 110 inch motor probably has about the same amount of stick as my built 95 incher, I sure wouldn't want to get into a street fight with a bike like mine on one of those Steaming Eagles whilst taking a bit of a canter down Wolf Pen Gap or Deals.

With an inch and half less ground clearance, forward foot controls, 29º rake at the steering head, more wheelbase and weight, the skinny 21" front wheel, crappy tires, lack of suspension damping and adjustment, lack of braking power, and a 29º max lean angle to the left, things might be just bit one sided.

Of course the owner of such a mount would probably have better things to do than chase some old guy on a blacked out Sport down some two lane country road, - like polishing up all that chrome, for instance, and then heading at a sedate pace to the local biker bar.

Takes more than an chrome plated inverted fork to get you through the twisties on time, am I right my brothers?

Just to end on a positive note, I must admit that the front fender fits better than the one on Jade, as the Motor Company insists on fitting the same fender to the 19 inch and 21 inch front wheels.

I guess they think their customers won't notice.

Probably got that one right!

Congrats on the bike Jon.

Gotta love those twincams. Especially the ones with 10 pounds of booooost.

I am not that big on chrome either, but I would like a quality set of USD forks for the softail.

Nice Softy, Terry.

That is an extremely sanitary blower install, that's for sure.

I am thinking about getting one of those nose cones for my bike too, if one shows up on eBay.

Seems like there are quite a few Harley riders hiding out on the board, aren't there?

The FXR models are probably the best handling "big inch" models due to their ground clearance and adjustable suspension. The dual disc helps too!
I normally don't ride with a windshield, but dammit, it's cold out this week!

Congrats on your new purchase Jon!!!

"MISS JADE" MUDDIES HER SKIRT.

It went down like this.

My buddy Gerry, who is perhaps overly fond of Italian vee twins, and rather disapproving of my recent "Buy American" tendencies,( I was racing Ducatis before he was born), asked me to join him in a bit of a canter.

To our amazement, I was pacing his Aprilia Mille rather easily, the thundering roar of Miss Jade reverberating loudly in our helmets.

The noise, and Gerry's frequent glances in his rear view mirror, spurred him on to greater efforts.

As I swung into the last tight right hander out of our local "corkscrew" the somewhat inartistic two into one homemade header on Miss Jade took the ground rather harshly, and she went into the biggest tank slapper I have ever encountered.

The bicycle straighted up, and wobbled across the road and into a giant pile of fall leaves.

Neither horse nor rider were seriously damaged, praise the Lord, and we were able to limp home.

As a result of this unanticipated dismount I have decided to make the following changes:

1. Replace the old Dunflops with new Metzler ME 880's
2. Fit an Ohlins steering damper
3. Replace or revise the offending exhaust pipe to provide more ground clearance.
4. Ride Miss Jade in a manner more appropriate to her, or ride Lil' Blackie if things promise get out of hand.

PS: I am thinking about refinishing the "tins" as they are called in Harley land, in black Line-X. I am not overly fond of the spit and polish Harley thingy. Had enough of that in the Army!
