Was out riding today getting the R ready for Indy when I Snapped the key off in the locked gas cap. I have no idea how to get the gas cap unlocked, where to get another in less than 5 day, or if there are any aftermarket ones out there. If you have any ideas on any of this please share. i won't be at indy but we did sit with gino rea and his family on the flight over to florida last week, they were doing the theme parks before heading up to indy | ||

I think the big thing is - how/why does this happen? At Homecoming 2010 me and my friend were heading to Ukes when my gas light came on, pulled over at a gas station and I couldnt get my key to turn in the gas cap. I sweated the rest of the way to Ukes, hoping I was close enough to make it. They, being such an amazing dealer, took it back and got the cap off, lubed something and its been pretty good ever since, though every time it doesnt turn easily I worry the issue has happened again. So what causes this and what can we do to prevent it? | ||

Well the good new is it's kinda fixed and I will be able to ride to Indy now. I took a nice size flat head screwdriver and was able to unlock the cap. Key is still broken off and not sure about another gas cap but that's for another day. Now I just get to ride to Indy with a screwdriver in my pocket lol. I know if I get the key out it will get hit with some wd40 inside and see if that helps. | ||

An old trick is to take a soldering iron and heat the end of the broken off key as much as possible. Take some solder and touch to the key (hopefully it's hot enough to melt the solder by this time) and hold in place until it hardens. Pull on the solder and the key will hopefully come out. | ||

That's a pretty slick trick. Froggy thanks for the offer I wont need it though the gas cap will work only with a screwdriver. I'm just going to order a new one from Harley there only 64 bucks with the key. | ||

Provide your VIN when you order, they can have the key and lock cut to match the rest of your keys. | ||

Make sure about the option of keying it the same. I had to order a new ignition switch for my 1125 and gave them the VIN and key card info. The dealer was told HD wouldn't/couldn't key the new ignition switch assembly to match my existing key, meaning the seat cowl lock and gas cap would be a different key. My situation worked out, because I just needed the switch, not the lock, so I installed my old lock onto the new switch...which I couldn't order separately even though it shows as a separate P/N! | ||

I had to bust mine by jamming a flat blade screw driver in it to defeat the lock then turn. had to replace the cap | ||

Once you have the cap out you can probably get new tumblers from locksmith if they were damaged by the screwdriver. Taking the cap apart is super simple once it's off the bike.flip it over and you'll see a pin slide pin out and it comes apart. | ||

I use some really good gun lube for my gas cap. Mine started to stick, but not now. | ||

I put a couple drips of oil from the dipstick onto the key and inserted it into the key slot several times with my XB9R when I had a sticking gas cap with that bike. Worked great! | ||

My "solvent of choice" while working with animal tissue(organic fat - hydrocarbon) was Ethanol. Funny, that's what's in most gas pumps these days... A silicone or graphite based lube will stay good longer...IMHO. |
