Hi guys my FMF Apex recently exploded. Yeah you heard right it exploded while riding! The inside seem of the muffler blew out and has a large hole the size of a baseball in it! anyway FMF is doing a warranty repair on the muffler but the headers and mid pipe are still intact. Would it damage the bike to ride with just the header and mid pipe. Its super loud but I live in the country and my work is in a rural location so noise isn't a big deal. I also have mid ohio coming up and theres a good chance this pipe wont be back to me in time! Any info would be appreciated! Thanks in advance | ||

aside from your hearing being damaged and the bottom of the motor being exposed to exhaust no not likely to cause you and issue provided the bike was already tuned to that pipe. if it wasn't that could be part of the mystery exploding pipe. | ||

EBR FMF tuned ecm. It doesn't back fire at all with or without the muffler and the FMF mid pipe directs the exhaust out the side. It looks like the rivet strap broke and thats what allowed the seam to tear open! | ||

I would not do that. Part of the problem is the extra heat shooting out at your engine. | ||

If you have never heard the bike without the muffler, it is absolutely ridiculous!!!! I don't think a mic will be able to handle that type of noise and a recording would probably not do it justice. | ||

Had an engine melt down years ago from a loose header letting the engine run leaner that it should. Maybe the water cooling makes a difference but some back pressure is expected to help the exhaust process. I'm distracted studying for some exams right now so I'm not going to try and remember all the details. My vote would be no. | ||

You will lose low end torque. Here is a short video of my bike without the exhaust in my garage. The exhaust gases blew the combination wrenches away. | ||

i wouldnt, it will run like crap, and be way to loud, as well as it makes it easy to warp the valves when they cool down far to fast. but what do i know. | ||

If you do run it, carry a rag to stuff in the end of the pipe whenever you shut the bike down. Then you won't warp the valves... Z | ||

Warped valves? Ex valves are cooled by transferring heat to the valve seats and surrounding casting so i doubt a missing "see through" silencer will have much affect on valve cooling would it? Why would the sidewinder exhaust work otherwise? Or the gazillion different big twin drag pipes for that matter. As far as fueling goes, whether you vent to atmo or an expansion chamber the tuned length hasn't changed (assuming none of the head pipe is integral to the silencer)... A see through offers very little if any back pressure so it shouldn't drastically change any of the parameters that dictate tuned length. Should be close enough to run without fear of damage anyway. Agree though that it would be ear bleeding loud. |
