The engine is untouched aside from the improved inlet and exhaust tracts and the addition of an ECU tuned to exploit them. The end result of these modifications is 137hp at the rear wheel. Considering the stock bike is quoted as 140bhp at the crank, that’s nearly a 10-15 percent improvement.

Hmmmm. I thought the race system was rated higher than that. It's about 13% over stock, roughly.

I'd suggest a cute Vespa.

The Buell, the one that won the AMA Championship, was built to win races, not fashion shows.

quote:

where the team’s Buell 1190RR-Bs have secured the championship before the season has even finished.

quote:

he is well known as being unequivocally committed to winning. One of his most famous maxims is "Winning isn't everything; it's the only thing", although he did not coin the phrase and the exact words he used are disputed. "Lombardi time" is the principle that one should arrive 10–15 minutes early, or else be considered late. His chief scout, Wally Cruice, once said of Lombardi's single-minded devotion to the game: "you didn't talk about anything but football. If you didn't have the facts, he didn't want you to waste his time."

To Jens credit, he does acknowledge in the article that this particular bike was a proof of concept that was focused purely on the functional modifications and not to look pretty. I.e., I think he also thinks it's pretty hideous.

At least you don't see it when you're on it and lap times don't have to have picture next to them!

Thanks Skntpig - I knew there was an even earlier bike that used the snorkel intake through the tank! I loved that ZX7R - that was THE bike back in the day.

The big news here isn't the intakes themselves, but the fact that they support the entire front fairing, the clocks and the fluid reservoirs. Neither the Bimota or the ZX-7R ever managed that.

Ugg, how do you embed an image?

Jens,

who needs ALL-original ideas,
when there are some already-proven approaches?

'good on ya' for adopting known success
& then trumping it with a plus -
the structural solution

you & Pegasus Race Team are an inspiration !!

Jens - please don't misunderstand, I never meant that you claimed the funnels were your idea. I was quoting the article where the writer said you adopted that from the XB-RR. Good point by Ensigncrusher that the funnels are structural in nature and provide support, that is truly innovative and I missed that.

Everyone knows that Jens and Pegasus have done the most to further Buells success on the racetrack for the longest time. An uphill battle that is to be both commended and congratulated! Winning as the underdog is always the best.

I am the writer : )

Don't you think you're making a relative mountain out of a mole hill here? The XB-RR did use funnels like these and for the same reason, the fuel-in-frame design precludes and easier route.

Isn't that what internet forums are for? ; )

I'm not calling you out either, that's just he way I read it. No problem and it was a great article.

The Bimota SB8-R came to mind because a few years ago I actually came across one at a drug seizure auction and was shocked to see it. It was even the limited edition all-carbon fiber one. I missed the bidding on it and still kick myself for losing that one.

Maybe i'm alone here, but I think the bike is bad @$$!! who cares where the air intake idea came from. All ideas are just building on older ideas. They took a proven idea (the intake) and improved it. But the big thing here is they are still racing Buells, still kicking @$$ and furthering the development of our favorite bike. I always wondered about somebody doing that on a street bike.

Court..

im guessing you didnt read the article.

The pic in HFL is of the experimental bike, not the winning 1190.

The winning bike looks great the bodywork on the experimental.. not so much.

But again as i said it isnt made to look pretty,

No panic! (-:

I absolute appreciate this discussion!

If you design a bike like that you must have the strong back to stand the discussions. It polarize of course and I am very happy that Wes presented it at HFL.

My idea was not that this bike should be everybodys darling, it is builded as rolling thinktank, following the stock 1125 and their bolt on possebilities. As an example the airintake on the nose is the point of max pressure AND it allow to use the stock 1125R lamp style. The OEM watercoolers are easy modified that any local workshop can do it. etc.

Our Team had a very busy and succesful season, including riding the Erik Buell Racing 1190 RR-B from victory to victory. For sure we know what great bike it is. But we also know that parts of the 1190 RR concept are not to overtake to the old 1125.

So the experimental story continue, at the german Biketoberfest we will have the rollout of the Stage II Experimental 1125R.

I hope you like it or hate it. Anyway as long as it pushes intelligent discussions the bike do the trick (-:

the metal trim around the exhaust tip of the belly pan caught my eye more than the brackets.

Good looking, comforting to know that the bike is evolving in a way that appears to address some basic issues.

Those 1190 seats are really up in the air!

How much of the bike is ceramic coated?

Dannybeull: The finish around the exhaust tips were strangely the first thing I noticed on the completed pics.

The experimental bike looks really interesting... Like something the organic Cylons from Battlestar Gallactica would use. I'd rock it.
