Thanks Xbud, I am running the stock filter.
Avc8130, the air is very still at the back of the gas cap.
And like Slypiranna said, the sensor is not quite reading ambient air but it is accurate at reading actual IAT and not the false reading of the hot air being sucked through the radiators by the fans.
I am finding that the displayed IAT now is only about 5-12 degrees hotter than actual ambient temp and not the 30-50 it was before.
While drilling the holes may not have helped or benefited at all in cooling the air box down, its different than what everyone else looks like and the look is growing on me. I just need to polish it out a little like Kc10_fe suggested.
If you have a CR someone could fab some ducts that go down from the top of the airbox lid to the pods on both side for some real Ram Air.

Ala R1...ruins asthetics...and too tight due to handlebar to frame clearance at full lock.
Up and over is where we're at now, very similar to old Buell XBRR... |

Sly has a point the clearance issues would be bad so there has to be another route. And it would need to be different for the "R" and "CR" models. I agree with Avc8130 on putting string on top of the air box to see how the wind is flowing. If you PM me I have some info about some stuff to fab it up with. |

I am going to guess that with some time, there are likely to be a number of people willing to take this on. It is a no-brainer as far as whether it is a good idea and it isn't that hard to do. |

I'll almost certainly do the relocation of the IAT.
I started fabricating an aluminum airbox a while ago with intakes on the top. Work has been crazy right now so hammering has been slow but I should have it done in the next couple weeks. |

What you are doing seems to make sense.
Your profile says you are a fuel system drivetrain engineer. That's a match.
I get the mail at the end of the day and the excitement of opening the mailbox and seeing a box! A box for my bike is even better. :-)

I guess this was an old development pic, just stumbled across it on the pegasus race team's site. XBRR air induction? Also, check out the cans on the exhaust. Wonder what it sounds like.

Ya, I just saw that a couple days ago, and if I had a R that's the direction I would be going. But since I have a CR then I going to have to look into some other options. At this point, I'm thinking that getting the hot air away from the intake duct is going to be the easiest thing to do. So reverse the fans and make the hot air exit the outside of the bike and not the center. I just dunno how I'm going to go about doing that just yet, and keep the bike street friendly as far as the cooling system goes. I would need to be able to sit in traffic for as long as needed and not have to worry about the bike overheating.... I'm gonna do it, but it's gonna take a little time and some thinking to make it work and look bitchin at the same time. |

Can you attach something to the existing air inlet duct to push the opening past the point where it will draw in hot air from the exhaust?
Maybe even insulate it an the original duct?
May be alot easer than creating a new duct up top and you get to keep the ram affect. May not even need to move the temp sensor.
Duct work with a flex attachment may allow it to be attached to the forks insted of needing a support. |

Ya, that might work with a flex attachment to the forks... Although I would smash it when coming down from a wheelie, or doing a stoppie. I know I use all of the fork travel as it is, and there is a slight mark of the clutch "cable" on the front fender. But ya, if you just put the duct on the front fender that might work. Keep it low pro and at least the same level with the clutch cable. |

I need to get out and take a look but I think you could mount something so it will not contact the fender and use the tripple tree to support it.
I'll try to measure the duct and see if I can find an off the shelf item that can bolt up. |

To back up what Highscore said:
The other day while screwing around I hit 151mph with no inner air box and stock filter. I ran out of road as I was not really going for a top speed run, I just wanted to blow by my buddy on his M2, and I kept going. Anyway, she was still pulling and this was a warm day (around 75 degrees). |
