Picked up an '09' 1125r last month - couldn't pass up half price offering. Love the bike, but am having trouble getting the 142 flash.

Had it in for first service last week and service manager didn't bother to hook up to check ECM as requested because he could "tell by listening" that my bike had the most current fash. Hmmm - never mind.

Called the dealer where bike was purchased (10 hours north) and while willing to be helpful, even offering to call Buell Tek line, called back and said all ECM issues were taken care before release of 09' models and no updates are available. It gets hot here in the summer, and (forgive me for being unreasonable) I would like the best running and more importantly, coolest running flash available. I'm guessing the factory is trying to limit non-cashflow work at dealers and limiting updates to those with specific complaints. I'd be willing to pay for flash if anyone knows of a dealer around South Alabama/Florida panhandle that is up to speed. Thoughts - recommendations?

It's a NON-CHARGEABLE flash. If they (the dealer) insists on charging you for it, YOU insist on watching the flash process. It will SPECIFICALLY state during the process that it is NON-CHARGEABLE. Any dealer that does buell work should have the digital tech tool to do the job. If they want a reason why, tell them "driveability problems" or "surging while riding" to get the flash.

They need to install it using the latest flash on Digital Technician .. not by using your VIN on HD-NET ... which it sounds like they are trying to do.

Adamec Harley in Orange Park/Jacksonville, FL seems to be on the ball with the flashes. I'll be taking mine there on Friday. I assume that's a good 10 hour ride from anywhere in Alabama though. I was having trouble getting the 152 flash for the CR. Like Dan said, they need to look for the flash itself me thinks and not just search using the vin #.

Thanks guys,

Will try local dealer again tomorrow. If I can convince him there's something newer available maybe I'll have a chance - service manager just doesn't seem particularly interested.

Might try factory customer service, though don't classify this as a "problem" as much as plain old customer service, so don't know if they will talk to me. Jacksonville is about 4.1/2 hours on I-10 so not out of the question, sure would prefer to stay as local as possible for what I consider basic upkeep.

Regards

The CALIBRATION is "Non-Chargeable", not the LABOR.... The labor charge is mandated by the dealer doing the work...

How many of you will spend 15-20 minutes per unit (Actual flash time is .3 hours warranty time/18 minutes from start to finish)to give someone free labor, when your main source of income is being paid by the hour off of flat-rate...

When the recall was out for a calibration, then it was free, no labor could be charged..

There are NO WARRANTY or RECALL notices for the latest/greatest set of calibrations...

The only way that you can get a FREE update to your current calibration is to say that you have a driveability issue...

Flame away...

A new flash in our eyes at my dealership is a runability issue which we aren't going to charge you for.

I would say all the previous calibrations have a driveability issue. On my bike they all surge between 4-5k rpms. It's not just annoying, but down right dangerous when leaned over.

You can blame the EPA restrictions all day long, but in the end it's the manufacturer producing the product. If they can't make it run right, then don't make it.

Oh let me add that is if the bike is under warranty and not salvaged. not sure why the dealer worries about that but they do for whatever reasons.

Tell the dealer that you're having driveability problems in town and ask for warranty service. You should get the flash as a warranty repair.

The dealer can't charge YOU a labor fee for warranty service. For warranty service, HD has to pay. but since we're talking about something that HD is calling a non-chargeable upgrade, HD won't pay the dealer.

You shouldn't have to pay for it.

so if you had an ecm spy cable, and that program, would you be able to tell what flash you have(on the 1125)>?

I noticed my dealer looked at my bike pretty closely. They even looked at the gap at the front of the pods. Maybe they thought it'd been down because I have no mirrors.

Nickg, with ecmspy and the cable you can see the firmware version. That is not a direct match to the digital tech designation, but you can match it up by searching on here or going to
O hiosportbike.com

here are the ones I know for the CR.

BUEZD0P0 = 10z or 12z, not sure which
BUE1D130 = 141 flash
BUE2D231 = 152 flash

These have all been on my CR.

yea..my dealer wants not to flash mine, they say it is up to date according to the computer (which i don't know) but did say that any update flash is part of a service. i do have a minor complaint that it cranks for a good 15-30 seconds before firing up after it was run (it will "sneeze" when doing this)
but i only have less than 50 miles so i am fine with running what is in there till the first service

no...i had a bout of gout and was unable to ride it(i could not even walk), THEN the temp plate expired and i had to wait for the rear tire to be fixed (it was going flat every day)
all set, picking it up again tomorrow. I added the high bars(2010 block offs) and 2010 graphics. I never liked riding a motorcycle (street) in less than ideal weather or night as I had a VERY close one when i was younger.(i am 38)

Be patient guys.
My Service Dept tells me this flash has some issues. You've seen reports of all the DTCs it generates.

We have more Buells in line for work than Harleys right now - S-1s to Loki.
We do the flashes for no charge mostly, but this one is giving the techs a bit of trouble.

Seems it's hit-or-miss when trying to get this one to take and sometimes can take several tries.
That's a lot of wasted shop time.

Let everybody work out the kinks.

I still have 05Z on Loretta...

I thought all of the DTC's generated with the 152 flash is just a side effect of the flash istelf. Supposedly the last step of he flash is to clear all of the bogus error codes before returning the bike to the customer?

Update - Finally go my 142 flash today. Actually had fun at the Harley shop. Got tickled watching the service manager and assistant climb all over the bike trying to figure out where to plug in. Obviously a first experience for them. Once the Digital Tech was hooked up it took a little while to get the bike to register, but install went smooth from there. Impression matches previous posts - smoother (especially low revs), stronger (requires more care dropping into 2nd at 70 MPH and applying full throttle), overall happier engine.

I've had a few bikes over the past 37+ years of riding - a couple made me smile sometimes - this one makes me laugh out loud.

Good board - I appreciate everyones thoughts and information.

Take Care.

My bike came back clean and smooth from its last flash - very nice - looking forward to the better gas mileage -
