Anonymous,

I loved the braking on the 1125R I road at RA. Can I install these on my XB race bike. If so will the XB master cylinder work or do you also have to install the one off 1125R. I asked Henry at RA and he was not sure.

Thanks

The price is out, and better than expected:

H0110.1AMXT 8-piston caliper suggested retail $329.79

Henry Duga has them in stock now, at the phone number above.

The 1125R uses a 14mm master cylinder compared to the 12.7mm of the XBs.

someone in another thread stated the parts books are in. How 'bout someone posting up the price and part number for the 1125r master cylinder & pads? Maybe one of our sponsors could put together a "kit" for us with XB's looking to upgrade??

An economical solution the the master cylinder problem is the Shindy 14mm Master Cylinder for front brakes, a readily available part.

The Shindy part number is 17652 in the silver color. It is also available in black.

Dennis Kirk, among others, sells the part for $150. Their part number is 193154.

Here is the Denis Kirk URL:

http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=193154&store=Main&catId=&productId=p193154&leafCatId=&mmyId=

Here is the master cylinder mounted on my Tomaselli clubman's bars.

Kindly note: the CRG levers will NOT fit unless modified.

ddd

Modifications to the lever include:

ddd

1. A set screw, I think it was a 1/4 -20, is installed in the top of the jaws to push the lever back, and make it fit properly. The jaws were drilled and tapped through the web, and the set screw was installed using a medium threadblocker, (blue).

2. The inner part of the lever that compresses the master cylinder is recontoured to move the contact point away from the pivot, closer to the center of the piston, and to allow the lever to move back so one can grip it normally.

3. Not shown is a thin shim over the brake light switch, about 1/32" thick.

The purpose of these mods is fourfold.

1. The "jaws" of this lever are too wide as supplied by CRG.
2. The position of them causes the lever to be too far forward.
3. The part of the jaws that activate the master cylinder is too far from the center of the piston.
4. The brake light will activate too soon.

Disclaimer: This could be bit tricky for some home mechanics, and failure to get everything just right could cause the brake to malfunction resulting in a crash, injury, death or worse.

So -don't try this at home, unless you are feeling lucky, ok?

Do not buy the incorrect master cylinder bore and use with the eight piston. The leverage ratios will go through the roof if you use one suited for less piston area.

Anony,

On a recent thread on the XB board, an anonymous contributor suggested that 14mm was the correct size for the 8 Piston Nissin caliper.

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/318236.html?1195136998

It this incorrect?

I use the 14mm on my six piston set up, because I could not find a 12.7. It increases the required break lever pressure a bit, but nothing serious for the kind of streetfighting stud muffin Buelligan that gets seriously down on his bicycle.

Savy?

Actually, looking at another post on this thread, it looks like the Buell part is cheaper, and by a considerable amount. That is a welcome surprise.

SHHH! The Harley P&A guys might hear you!

Clearly, you meant to say that the part is grossly over priced, and is certainly maximizing their shareholder value, and if it goes up at all you will go buy an import cruiser. Or something. ;)

I'm kidding... but I'm not. I bought a KLR-250 for $600 as a "second bike"... it was a 1985, but basically that identical bike was in production until 2005.

Every time I have to get a part for that thing, I get more pissed at Kawasaki. $30 for an exhaust gasket. $50 for a valve cover gasket. $40 for a rubber intake boot. $50 for a spark arrestor. The list goes on...

The net result is that I fabricate everything possible, or buy off ebay, and only buy factory when I am absolutely cornered. And I get mad.

This KLR-250 is otherwise an astounding little bike (in terms of bang for the buck, utility factor, and as Court so eloquently states the "why I ride a motorcycle" factor). So while I am fairly fond of this bike, my opinion of Kawasaki as a whole is that they will take advantage of me whenever they have an opportunity.

My Buell experience could not be more different. Parts cost about what I think they should (including a fair profit), and sometimes less. Buell customer service (once I persist through the gauntlet of Harley automated phone systems) could not have been more helpful... and they seem like people I would want to hang out with.

Even my dealer (on try three, when I finally found a really good one) are people I enjoy seeing. Ever since I rebuilt my transmission on the M2, and got "before and after" dynos for my 9sx exhaust and intake changes, I get the same kind of respect as the guy that comes in asking for parts for his 58 panhead... and we all quietly and discretely crack a smile when some poser starts spouting off whatever stupid thought of the day.

My impression of Buell is that they will build me a great bike, charge me a fair price (for them and for me), and charge me a fair price for parts. It feels like a partnership, and I like that. As long as Harley does not screw this up, I will keep driving crappy cars and nice motorcycles : )

They may make $10 less profit on my next set of turnsignals, but I financed my bike at 1% higher rate through Harley then I had as a standing offer from my credit union, and I paid full retail and asked for extras, rather then dickering to pay less. Mainly, because I was not pissed off.

If I was buying a new Kawasaki, I would finance it at 1% *higher* in order to go somewhere else... and wring every last freaking penny out of that dealer... just because they are going to stick it to me down the road when *they* have the advantage...

Someone with a parts book - are the four pads in the front the same as the 2 in the back?

Just wondering if they were that slick...what with 2 pistons on each pad and all : ) That alone would make the racers (or at least me, if I were a racer) thrilled. Just keep a handful of pads in a drawer and stick 'em on whichever end you needed 'em.

I just spoke with a parts guy and he said he didn't think that the 1125 caliper will mount the same as the xb caliper. Does anyone know if th xb mount will work for the new caliper? He quoted me around $450 for the 8 piston caliper and the 1125r master cylinder. Also can the xb break line be used or is the 1125 break line needed?

1125R caliper and XBRR caliper bolt right up to XB. But you do have to change master cylinder and brake hose too.

Guys I rode this bike at Barber and can tell you that the brakes are awesome but keep in mind the 47mm forks that also help reduce the dive. You don't want to retro fit only to do an accidental endo. I'm talking one finger braking here. Don't want to come off as negative. Just a thought.
