I really like the black frame a lot better, and the red plastic is very nice as well.

Can't wait!

None of you guys think this smells to high heaven? Hell, I'll send my phishing emails to all of you and ask for more personal information - I can use the SAME logos and links that they do. It doesn't even take any computer skills to do it either.

Sure it "looks real" but WHERE are the contacts? WHERE are the links to the agency sponsoring the contest?

Sure, there are links to Buell, Pirelli, etc but NOWHERE does it state anything that says this is legitimate or just WHO is doing this.

Yeah, you "agree" to abide by generic terms but I could create a web page with links just like that and get a TON of people to sign up online and give out their REAL addresses, REAL names, REAL emails. REAL info on REAL people is valuable in the internet underground of Phishers and scammers.

I'll ALWAYS check into anything that asks for ANY personal information before just giving away ANY thing that could assist an anonymous third party to know WHO and WHERE I am and HOW to get in touch.

Hate to be such a cynic but COME ON PEOPLE - check this stuff out first. It MIGHT be legit but I found NOTHING on that web page that tells me that it is legit.

WHO is doing it? It's NOT Pirelli, It's NOT Buell, It's NOT Harley - WHO?

IF it's legit, it is PISS-POOR, junior high school quality.

How are you so sure, its not buell?

Oh - I see, you read it on the internet!

I can claim anything, post links to legit sites.

WHERE and WHO are sponsoring this contest??

NOWHERE does it state that Buell or Harley are involved. It only posts legitimate links to legit Buell, Pirelli and HD websites. Same way the phishers do it when sending out "bank notices." It's really easy to do... just lift the logo (gif or jpg) and link that to the REAL site. You don't need any sysadmin priveleges to do that.

How do you think those millions of Bank "notices" work.

I can paste all the links for my Credit Union into a phoney front page but ask people to fill in a "form" requesting name, address, email address and contact information... that data gets to me but IF the person is "suspicious" and clicks on a link, it takes them to the REAL site with "terms and conditions" - which are MEANINGLESS.

Like I said, IF this is legit, it is POORLY DONE.

I'm waiting to hear back on an email I sent out... stay tuned.

OK - MANY sorries to all.

I just got confirmation IN WRITING from a trusted resource - this IS TOTALLY legitimate.

I just needed to verify it BEFORE inviting all my buddies to give out their personal information to an unknown third party.

Again, I HAVE checked it out and it IS LEGITIMATE!!!

My bad.

Actually my favorite part of the thing is seeing Laughlin-Constable back on the Buell account. I sat through a meeting once during which someone conducted a sham meeting to take the account from them and give it to another firm.

Laughlin-Constable made the leap to lightspeed following the first Bush campaign. Since coming to national prominence they've stayed fresh and creative . . I was thrilled when they bought a large New York City ad agency.

Steve Laughlin is not only one of the best in the country at what he does, he's a nice person and a true enthusiast.

You can thank the Laughlin-Constable folks for some of the most incredible Buell stuff to ever come into public view . . the first 1995 Buell brochure. . (still perhaps the most stunning Buell photography ever) and the 1996 "Pray for Pavement" campaign.

There are only three things . . . as a dreamer . . . I'd push for.

  • Give the LC and GS Design folks a defined set of objectives for the Buell website, turn them loose, monitor them from time to time and revel in the success you'd enjoy. For a company, while touting being on the leading edge to not have a single e-mail address, online parts catalogs that include all current updates (they exist, legal keeps them from view) and a REAL website is a rallying call to send legal to their proper place in the process.

  • Ditto the Buell clothing and accessories lines. . . the stuff now it totally lame. Anyone else still drool over the 1995 Buell catalog with shirts, helmets, jackets and so forth? Rip this from the hands of the 21 year-old motorclothes kids . . you can not take a fringed jacket, label it Buell and make it work.

  • Bring back Tina Daniel. : )

Personal rant off . . .

My only concern was in NOT asking people to give their personal information BEFORE I had verified its legitimacy.

It IS verified. Legit. IT is a way cool thing.

Good to know and I've already posted the link in multiple places and forwarded it to friends now that I have confirmed that it is A OK.

What is the big deal about giving your name, address and phone number out? Now if they were asking for a SSN, I can see the problem. See all the junk mail in our mailboxes--our names and addresses are public knowledge already.

If it is legit, it is no big deal - I just NEVER assume that it's legit without checking.

VALIDATED email addresses are a marketable commodity - more valuable are lists of validated mailing addresses and even MORE valuable are lists of validated physical addresses.

Though I CERTAINLY entered this drawing/promotion today (after checking) I just don't like having my name and addresses on a lot of lists that can then be sold to other list sellers. YMMV
