Bent 1...the problem you described on a carbed bike is usually due to a very rich condition just off idle & in the midrange when you go to full WOT. Not sure if this will help you nail it down any. Something in your EFI isn't sensing correctly it sounds like

Try removing the filter element & see if it continues to do the bogging...by letting more air in it will confirm it's an overly rich condition. Running it without the filter for a very short time shouldn't do any harm.

Ben,

Souns initially like a TPS sensor not calibrated correctly. If it's not doen 100% on the money it can cause problems.

Also, I am not sure when the change to the throttle plate being captured inside of a milled out slot in the throttle shaft instead of attached to the side of a half-shaft. There have been 2 instances of the shaft breaking reported here that I recall, sounds similar.

Check the X1 files for some pictures, you will need to remove the airbox/snorkle tube to look inside.

Does the check engine light ever come on? How long and what pattern does the light show on startup? Four seconds then off is what you want, if it is four seconds then off then on for eight seconds, a historical trouble code exists.

Hey AZ-M2,
Don't just look at that oil pump fitting and think it is tight enough. I started getting a leak that several people, even the shop (they replaced 2 shocks)thought was the shock. I had even taken off the reservoir and tightened with an open end wrench.
The shop finally took off the fitting and supposedly used teflon tape on it. It didn't leak again for quite awhile, but it started again.
I took down the reservoir and it was a little loose again. Since I tightened with a fitting wrench (that is an aluminum pump so don't over do it)it up it hasn't leaked again.
Too bad they had to replace a couple of shocks to find it.

Blake and Aaron, it's not the safety switch, so it is in the clutch tranny. I guess I need to find a reliable mechanic here in El Paso, Buellie Dan or Arvel if you see this, should I just go to Barnett or do you guys know someone who actually likes Buells in the El Paso area.

If the bike loses power to the rear wheel without the engine speeding up, the problem is not the transmission. I'd keep checking for an electrical problem.

There was one mechanic that was good with Buells at Barnetts. Don't know if he still works there. Other than that the service is slow and typical for HD shops. It takes forever and then one day more.

I have heard some good things about Chicks in Alb. NM. Give them a call.

Could be the switch at the clutch lever then. That's a rare gremlin, but it has bitten on or two that I've heard of. Same drill, short out the switch. Just to be sure, how do you know it isn't the kickstand switch?

One other thing to check, make sure all the wires plugged into your coil have secure connections. They just hang there upside down; especially the smaller (low voltage) wires can lose good contact and the low voltage can't overcome even the tiniest gap. Especially if they have been coated with dielectric grease. Did that to myself once. Funny thing was, the problem occurred just after my kickstand switch went bad. That dang Murphy is ALWAYS kickin' my arse. :D

Rattler described an overly rich condition in a carbed bike. How do I go about fixing that? Is there a mix adjustment screw on these carbs or is it jetting? I only have the problem down low, I have a 45 slow jet in.

An overly rich condition on an otherwise properly adjusted bike could be due to debris clogging the air bleed port in the mouth of the carb or improper float operation, i.e. dirt in the needle valve/seat, float adjustment too high or float leaking.

Help!!!
It's one o'clock here in Sweden and I desperately need some good advice really quick (and I know you guys in the States are awake..)

I have just disassembled my carb for some tuning:
Main jet=200, Slow Jet=45 I have had problems with coughing! Any suggestion on which jets to buy when the store opens in the morning????

The bike is fitted with WileyCo muffler, KuryAkin aircleaner and Buell Race ignition (M2'99)

I rather not move the needle since I'm not removing the carb from the bike...

Another Q: My air/fuel mixture screw is "visible". I have heard somethings about drilling and removing a cover over the screw in order to get it "active"/maneouverable. If I can see the screw, does that mean that the drilling thing has been done??

Silly Q perhaps, but I desperately need your advice.

Note: I'll rather have higher fuel consumption than living in fear of burning a hole in my pistons...

Bull,

If you are running a 45 pilot jet you should be fine. You can try adjusting the idle mixture screw to see if that helps. Simply screw it in fully and back it out 2-1/2 turns, start the bike and adjust for optimum idle. If you need to turn the idle mixture screw more than 3 turns out from full in, go to a #48 pilot jet and readjust as above.

First however, you might want to check your intake manifold seals for leaks. Do this by setting your already warm engine at a fast idle, approximately 2000 rpm, and spraying a light oil like WD-40 or a contact/electrical cleaner all around each seal. If during this process the engine speed noticeably decreases, you have identified an intake seal leak. New/redesigned seals were released in 2000 and your dealer should have them in stock, they should hold up much better.

One of the real common things that happens is the carb to manifold seal wads up when you push the carb on there. Always check it. A light coat of grease on the i.d. of the seal does wonders.

Rattler & Rempss, thanks for the advise. I'm running a clean K&N filter so I hope its breathing ok, but I'll try a run without to see. As far as the TPS goes, it was just reset at the dealer last week to see if it would clear the problem. The Tech wrote down the voltage reading on the work order too, although I don't remember the number, it was within the service manual specs.
I'm kinda thinking the problem is a sensor ain't up to it as well, but I don't have any codes, and the light is showing a normal condition, on 4 sec. then off.
So I still don't know I guess. Off to the X1 files I go...
Maybe I should just replace the O2 sensor and see.

The TPS must be within spec and "flashed" into the ECM. It can and has ben done wrong. It seems as thought getting it to the lowest possible voltage before "flashing" it are not taken as seriously as we would like.

Most sensor readings out of spec will issue a trouble code to the ECM.

Ben, In my job repairing Submarine Periscopes I have seen lots of equipment that checked out fine electricly and didn't work worth a S41T (Trons are that way).

A friend of mine in Norway has an S4 Ducati Monster which she bought new. It has been in the dealership for the last couple of months for a noise in the engine. They pulled it apart, diagnosed the problem as a bad gear, replaced the parts and put it back together.
The noise was still there.
Pulled the engine down again, decided the main bearings were bad, put it back together again and sent her on her way Friday evening. Shop closed, she left. On the way home, noisy engine again.
She's meant to be doing a track day on it today.
Very frustrated and pissed off customer.

Bull, the stock CV40 carb has the idle mixture screw set during assembly and then sealed under an aluminum plug to keep us from changing the setting. Thanks EPA. If you can see the screw, it has been drilled out. The CV44 doesn't have this plug since it is not a stock carb and it labled as race only. However recently, I have noticed that HD has called the CV44 street legal, probably since they were selling their Screaming Eagle Wide Glide with it.
