Recommend this for anyone losing their fly screen, did a great job protecting the wiring from rain and attempted snow - lol.

My wife brought the cane and folding chair for me, and it was a pretty good time at only 11 miles away - at the Black Diamond Brewery in Concord - kid you not they had chocolate flavored beer! Lee was there, Fireman Jim, and plenty of other bikes and bikers - a really cool time.

It was pretty awesome to finally meet Jim! Need to go do some dyno work at his place in the near future; and talk more about possibly taking RB to the salt and see what's possible.

Lee - if you do the salt - have a new electrical harness on standby for afterwards - seems salt is a big glitcher of electronics - lol

other news - Colored 20 leds amber today, then taped off the tail section for gutting and measured the plate holder for longer light mounting screws and cutting as well. Tomorrow I take the rotozip to the plastic then the dremel for the sanding and polishing - lol - and to make the fit right for the tail light. The rebirth of the new Maul begins!

Hi Ezblast your gonna like that Lectron I have used them many years. Lectron used to be here in Lapeer Michigan, You could go right to there shop and buy your carb and they would install and dyno your bike for you. They are very easy to tune once you get the right needle. would you share the size and needle once you get it set up? Thanks Rick.

No problem - I ordered the deeper billet bowl, the two to one throttle cables, the torque stack, and a few other doodads to make tuning easier, having a easy manual choke is nice as well - I'll list when I see my receipt - they don't bill till it's built. They have a nice reputation - this should be interesting, and when one considers all the money I have put into a stock Keihin CV 40 to make it perform better - it could be a good savings to future builders looking for bolt on performance. They have two forms for you to fill out as well - they are really dedicated to making it right. This will be fun!

Almost done with the rear - some fine sanding and trimming of the Plate/light holder, and tail section. The tail section will never look great - too much road rash to begin with, but it does look a lot better and for a DD bike it will be fine.

EZ, I am running a no flyscreen look on my bike too. Stock headlight, but I like the look of yours. You mentioned you swapped out the headlight bracket, what'd you end up using??

Universal brackets are available on eBay, among other places. You can also flip the stock brackets upside down.

I moved the springs to a higher position after the picture, and adjusted the throttle cable - still a tiny bit of free play, but easily livable. It's on - idle adjusted 11.5 to 13.7 cold to hot. Mid too lean 15 to 25, FT to the top 13.5 to 11.5. Going to have to take the top off and give the needle a half turn to richen it up and throttle cable itself needs more slack taken out - lol. Started right up with just a little choke - more tuning before doctor's apt.

Had to turn the needle 3/4 a turn in to get the middle end rich enough, still working on idle af - too high - must adjust idle air screw out more turns, and turn high jet out more turns as well - turned it too far in - lol - still I must say tuning with an af gauge makes it easier and the tuning itself is easy - turn some knobs, or remove top and turn needle, and set needle. I'm done with the needle - it's stays between 13 to 15. Just sorting out idle and wot/top end - both of which have their own circuits - lol.

Tunning continues - notes - this is a performance carb and as I've been told by their mfgr is thus tune differently - they have a common idle that is 10.5 to 11.5 af that idles at 1500 to 2000 rpms - definitely something to get used to, however, if you remove the air screw you can get idle to 12.+ af - which acceptable to me since I run the Denso racing plug - a regular plug would be iffier - so you definitely want the racing plug. I was a tad rich on the low so went back one-quarter turn on the needle - 13 - 15 - acceptable. Each test now includes dialing in the top end - which was first too lean, now a tad too rich - slowly dialing it in. This carb responds so fast to input from throttle that the wb af gauge has a hard time keeping up and it is wonked with the sudden changes, but settles back in in consistent throttle and even throttle usage so that I can get some real readings. Everything is very crisp, setting idle rpms is the biggest hassle - but I'm close now.

Waiting to see if "bolt on performance" matches your 15 years of tuning the stock CV carb. Great if it does and also what sacrifices, if any, were made (besides the 2000rpm idle).

It has survived the neighborhood riding tests, maiden short voyage is today - tunning on this carb is wildly easy though - and it definitely leans more towards performance side of things. Still need to comfortably reroute the throttle wire.

Idle issue close to resolved, now too lean, needle to be turned forward 1/4 turn, she didn't strand me - so all is good on that front.

A preliminary report based on 200 miles of riding - mostly just tunning, though the last 50 have been reliability testing - no hiccups, falling out of the boot, etc. type of thing. Last tank was best gas mileage to date at 37mpg - worst - because of heavy on and off testing and adjusting was 25 mpg. I averaged between 30 to 35 mpg with the CV 40. 1300 rpms is as low as I can set idle - with the B 70 cam and 1.75 ratio rockers - there is a noticeable cam lope/hop at idle - and idle AF with the air screw gone has a low of 10.5 to a high of 12.5 - which is fine if your running the Denso Iridium Race plug (I am) - any other plug would probably drown in time. AF hangs in the 11.5 to 13.5 area - with low touches in 10+ to high touches in 15.3 - the touches very sporadic - usually in fast transition/adjustments - getting on and off throttle really slow. Steady state at any rpm seems fine and at that will net you your most valid AF values - that and wot. Wot has a high value of 13.5 and a low of 11.5 - basically getting on it vs steady state fast climb. for low end I cruised the hood, for testing out speed response and wot I used the freeway onramp to the next off ramp, to the next on ramp - etc. Did a series of in city rides to prove basic ride-ability, and then did a Third back road twisty going to church ride - to the end of Deer Creek (which ends on Marsh Creek Rd) and back to home - a total of 49 miles. No hiccups and response was always fast and quick - transitions smooth - the damn carb working faster than the AF gauge half the time. I did a good number of throttle releases anytime I even thought it might be lean, but all I ever got was regular throttle decel sound. As both Lee and I have observed - response to imput is really quick and that does make the bike quicker. there are other things I had to do to make this carb work as well, but have nothing to do with the carbs performance, so I will get into them at a later date. That is my preliminary report on the Lectron carb - more to follow as I get more miles on it!

Lectron Results: 500 plus miles -
Is this a carb for a daily rider - no - as advertised - it is a performance carb. Is it a carb you can use on the streets - yes!!! It has quirks and differences that you have to get used to, and it's range is all about performance. A af gauge will be required, or dyno tuning - as my bike needed to be enrichened two quarter turns past what they thought my motor would need with the specs they requested. I ride with a tuning AF gauge - not a regular dash model - supposed to be even more sensitive. Idle will rest a tad below 1500 rpm warm and closer to 2000 rpm cold - after warmed up for a few minutes - blipping the throttle a small bit to warm up - this is for the first warm up of the day - afterwards usually first turn of the key usually starts the bike. At this point it should be mentioned that you definitely want the Denso Iridium Racing plug - it is practically impossible to drown, and that is important on a carb made to run rich for performance reasons. Airscrew out 3 1/2 turns out - maxed - af at idle danced between 9.5 and 13.0 most of the time at 10.5 to 12.0. The idle screw is a real fine tuning screw - though the largest screw there. There are three screws all together - an idle airscrew, an idle screw, and a top end jetting screw that works similar to a dial a jet in nature delivering more fuel on demand of the engine at higher rpms. The carb works on a slide fuel rod delivery system. The flat of the fuel rod is tuned for the delivery of the fuel - atomizing it, the taper of the rod is the tune. You can enrichen or lean out the overall tune by quarter turns in or out - details of how that is done is in their video. Your af range will be between 11 and 13 for the great majority of your readings, when the gauge allows readings - the irony is that the carb responds faster than the gauge and reads basically during steady states and full wot which is another form of steady state. What does all this mean in operation - Starts easy but soft blipping is needed for the first few minutes to get steady state - for idle to settle in, the name of this carbs game is response and that it does in spades. The pull from the engine is urgent and strong - no down shifting needed on the steep roads, and the fuel delivery is always right on, no jerkiness, misses, slow and then fast surging - just pulling as hard as the bike can go. The quirk is that if you were at high rpms for a long time, then you need to just blip the throttle and it settles - idle follows the cams rhythm which is cool sounding, but takes getting used to after the steady state of a CV 40 or Mikuni carb. And that is the rub – this is a performance carb and it is happiest when it is performing. Idle is a jumpy thing because of the richness of the carb in general, and I would not use a bike with this carb for parades – though it would do it as well, but you might have to restart a few times – lol. This carb was made for performing and it does that better than a stock carb will dream of, the tradeoff being its finicky nature. To me this is no bother because I am not commuting with this bike, I am either doing back roads or events. I plan to get a daily rider for doctor visits, etc. – an extra bike to loan friends visiting out of state, etc. Gas mileage is about the same as before or just a tad better because unlike a stock carb where af values are in a wide range, this carbs af range is really very narrow – rich but narrow – so if I’m not stopping or idling much, I’ll actually have better mileage – lol. I had to add an extra spring to the top of the carb to the rear heim joint for extra support but otherwise no problems. So instead of two supporting springs there are three and Thumpe’s super boot. I had to use their single wire throttle cable and routing was interesting but nothing insurmountable – you mount it to the forward throttle position. If your Blast is your back road carver, toy and something you like to really go on, then the Lectron carb could be for you – especially if you have done a ton of modifications to the motor – this would be the icing on the cake. If your bike is your commuter and errand runner and you need it for that – I would pass. It’s not that the carb could not do the job, it’s just that the stock carb would do that better. I really like it and though tuning was a different thing from the Kehin, it was actually much easier to tune. The AF gauge made that a breeze – I would not have bothered trying without it though and I would recommend that tool to anyone trying this carb.
I like it - it's staying on the bike!

Note - I can now declare the Lectron carb as streetable, however, performance is over steady state in this carbs behavior, and incity stop and go gas mileage does suck, while backroad or freeway mileage is very good.

Now on to other things - got my new to me 2001 modified Blast to set up for a daily rider - all the goodies already on it paid for itself - and makes for a great start to a project daily rider.















And the work on the red bike's tail section just needs some fine sanding and tightening up of the wires - everything works!!!

Lee came over - was supposed to be more - but all had weird family interuptis type stuff. Anyway we talked about rearsets made from peg hangers and I dove into the suspension set up of the front forks - with Lees help we got it done - talked some Buell treason, ate pizza - and called it a day - it was nice!

Installing the Works Kit for the Front forks with the Gold-Valve Emulators:
Tools: Very thin but long 6" flat head screwdriver, a manual non-ratcheting straight handled bit holder/driver, a jack, long needlenose, dental floss.
Note - everything becomes one man easy once you add the jack to just unbind the forks,not lift the tire off the ground - you'll see when you jack the front up.
Jack front up till forks fully extended - no farther.
Use bit holder to push down on seal and thin long screwdriver to pry out ring, and then slowly release spring with bit holder.
Dis-assemble - take out all springs, etc. - there is oil involved so have rags, paper towels, etc for messes. Long needle nose makes pulling out bottom spring a breeze - I used a long piece of dental floss, wrapped it twise around the GVE top spring and used it to hold the GVE to the springs bottom as I dropped both into the tube - quickly so they would not seperate - and when bottomed pulled the dental floss out. Assemble rest per instructions and opposite of Dis-assembly. Do not loose sealing ring - they are as rare as hen's teeth.
The secret is the jack! And oil fork level is 11 cm with springs in. - lol
