sounds to me like the idle speed is adjusted too low.

then again. I fixed my problem after MONTHS of headaches by replacing my coil. electrical issues can be kinda difficult to track down tho

You are also experiencing a classic boot symptom too.The only sure way to tell if a boot is bad is too remove it (if you cant see the crack). I can make a boot look brand new, even with a 2" crack in it. My other comments assumed you were sure the boot was fine.

Getting too much gas would foul the plug, cause black smoke, lowping (sp?), and unless it was severe, the bike would still be rideable.

Spark plugs are good for about 10,000 miles and will look just fine at 10k, but will be spent. I wouldnt trust a 13 year old plug. Good call there!

Remove the ignition module cover to be sure you have spark. Its a real easy way to check for proper spark initiation and as mentioned earlier, electrical problems can make you tear your hair out.

Yours is also a classic problem from someone who took the carb apart "to give it a good cleaning" and they've fouled something up. While I seem to beat a dead horse on this issue, this happens with constant frequency and oftentimes we will go through several pages of dialogue to find out that the problem started after a minor repair or modification was done, but was forgotten or overlooked "because I didnt think it would matter".

I hope you take all this as my trying to help. I've been on this board for over 10 years and we've seen many problems. I try try and give as much information as necessary and try not to leave any stone unturned. "Das Boot" and "I took the carb apart" (imho) seem to be the biggest contributors to problems.

Disconnect the headlight to insure longer starting before the battery dies. There is a (very fragile) fuse you can pull OR the plug for the headlight is about 6" down the wiring from where it exits the headlight housing.

PS Do you have a repair manual? If not, get one, whether online or a hard copy. It makes trying to explain and diagnose things so much easier.
Once you fix this problem, you'll find the Blast is low maintenance, bullet proof, cheap to own and a lot of fun!

So out of curiosity, I have kind of a trivia question for everyone. I was watching one of the Bourne movies and saw a Uly Police model in the movie. So, here is my question, how many movies or TV shows have you spotted a Buell model in?
Most people don't know that the T-1000 was riding a modified S1 in Terminator 2.
Blade 3 had 2 Buells.
ArCee in the new Transformers movie is supposed to be a buell.
Witch Blade has Yancy Butler riding a X1.
Ghost Rider has several X1s and modified S1s.
I'm sure there are more..

I am usually good at electrical fixes but this one has be befuddled. I cannot find any shorts. all wires look in good condition. anyone seen this before?

Hello all!

I just purchased a 2003 Blast this past weekend, and I have a few questions.

First off, the thing starts really hard when it has not been started for several days. To the point where it practically kills the battery. I bought some Sea Foam and will run that through as soon as I can, but I am open to other explanations as well.

Second, the thing runs rough, especially at lower speeds, some pops and an occasional backfire. Not sure if this is a carb that needs tuned or again some dirty engine parts. Very new to the bike arena and have very little idea.

I am also looking for front fairing or windshield of some sort. The one I bought is missing one, and I'd like something to redirect the wind a bit.

And finally, the front tire will need replaced soon. Which models should I be looking for as a replacement?

Thanks to anyone who took the time to read this entire post. I know it's long.

Nooch - sounds like your flasher - get the new style from an auto parts store - see my profile for spec.s

Flint - see if seafoam works, use new gas, empty carb as well - is the bike otherwise stock engine wise? - airscrew out to 2 turns, check plug - replace?

What? No "Das boot"? Sounds lean, I'd check that first!
Flint, welcome!
Please do not take the carb apart "to give it a good cleaning". It doesn't need it and you will very likely wind up with more problems. Anyone that tells you to "give the carb a good cleaning " does so because they have no idea what's wrong and they hope that will fix whatever is wrong: (
You don't say how many miles are on the bike, how many miles you've put on it or how long it might have sat.
The Blast runs rough to those not familiar with a rubber mounted single cylinder engine. It also needs to be run at higher rpms than you may feel comfortable with (initially). Any bike that has been sitting is going to a bit rough initially, especially if it has stale gas. A multicylinder engine will run on turpentine, a single needs good gas as it must rely on just the one cylinder to start. If it runs and rides, put a 100 miles on it and see if things improve. Please, please, please avoid doing anything with or too the carb. Wait.
The headlight plug is about 6 inches down the wiring leading away from the headlight housing. Unplug it to extend starting life (but please plug it back in before riding).
You also don't say what your mechanical abilities or experience is. This is important to know before you get in way over your head!
Keep us posted!
PS An occasional pop or backfire can be tolerated, but if its every 30 seconds or so, stop and find the problem.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I just purchased so I'm not sure how long it sat. The speedometer/odometer turn on and light up but do not register speed or miles. I think this is the speed sensor so I have purchased one and it is on its way here.

It doesn't pop or backfire badly at high speeds, at the lower RPMs so maybe it does just need broken in.

I don't have much mechanical experience, but I do my research. I do not plan on doing anything major myself. The speed sensor is a quick and easy repair.

I happened to look at the carburetor and noticed that the boot is a little chewed up. Is that a difficult fix?

No. A common mistake is tightening the clamps too loose or too tight. But it's not rocket science!
